Watched the pigskin proceedings on ESPN3 from Ruston's Joe Aillet Stadium and wasn't a happy Cougar camper for most of the game. Their high octane offense sputtered through the first half due to another slow start that was almost fatal to their chances for victory.
They were down 20-7 at halftime and two Louisiana Tech scores in a 1:36 span in the third quarter had my fave college football team down 34-7 before they woke up and decided to start playing football. UH responded with a lightning quick 44 second 3 play drive capped off by a 50 yard bomb to Patrick Edwards to get the Cougars back in the game.
After the defense stiffened, the Cougars got the ball back and executed a nine play 64 year drive capped by Bryce Beall's 2 yard TD to narrow the deficit to 34-21 with 12:33 left in the game and start ratcheting up the pressure on the Bulldogs.
Of course, kill the clock was on the Bulldogs minds but a fumble by Tech's Ray Holley on the UH 20 gave the Cougars the ball back once again. They took 2:48 and nine plays to execute another drive capped off with a 4 yard Bryce Beall TD to close to 34-28.
UH regained possession of the ball with 2:38 left in th game and took just 1:10 to go 64 yards as Case Keenum found Patrick Edward with a 32 year acrobatic strike by Edwards to give Cougars their first lead of the night. The defense then stepped up and stopped Louisiana Tech on a 4th and one play to force a the turnover on downs and allow Cougar fans everywhere to resume breathing.
The come from behind win makes the Cougars 3-0 for the first time since 2009, was the biggest comeback win in school history, and the 15th time in Case Keenum's Cougar career he'd done so.
The Coogs and their fans get to exhale before the upcoming game at Robertson Stadium versus Georgia State next Saturday. It's our final nonconference game before we move into the C-USA schedule and I have just one humble request before we play it.
Can y'all start playing kick somebody's azz football in the first quarter and not the third or fourth quarter?.
