Venus and Serena Win Beijing Doubles Gold

My favorite tennis playing sisters shook off their disappointing quarterfinal singles losses and beat Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain 6-2, 6-0 to win the women's doubles tornament

They were the 2000 Sydney Games doubles gold medallists, but didn't defend the title at Athens because of an injury to Venus. They made a little history in the process by becoming only the second pair to win the Olympic doubles title twice after fellow Americans Gigi and Mary Jo Fernandez.

While they had their troubles in the Beijing singles tournament, they didn't on the doubles side of it. They only dropped two sets during the entire tournament and were rarely challenged. In fact, the sisters are now 10-0 in Olympic doubles competition.

The 2012 London Games tennis tournament venue, should the Williams sisters decide to defend their title and make the 2012 Olympic team, will be conducted at the Williams sisters personal playground, the All England Lawn Tennis Club.

I love to see those women succeed.

Renee, so do I, even when others don't wnat them to or hate on them when they do.

I'd feel just as proud of them even if I wasn't a tennis player.

Here's the comment I left on the Washington Post Olympic blog slamming a hater of the Williams sisters.

This idiot questioned their patriotism since their tennis outfits weren't red white or blue.

Some people are still drinking Hateraid from 55 gallon drums when it concerns the Williams sisters.

"We were really focused from the first point. We really wanted to win," said Serena, whose trophy cabinet includes 30 singles titles, eight of them Grand Slams. "We feel like we've contributed to our country in a huge way. That's really what it's all about."

Since CGG is complaining about lack of patriotic attire, where's your complaint about the pink leotard that Nastia Liukin wore during the all-around event?

Or does that ludicrous perception of 'lack of patriotism' based on apparel colors only apply to gold medal winning African-Americans?

What gets me is how they refer to their clothing when they are wearing all black as threatening. Yeah they are threatening because they are super achieving black women and we simply cannot have that. I also cannot stand to hear them referred to as ugly. I am not even a fan of tennis but I love the sisters They are great role models for young WOC.

That 'Fear of a Black planet' also applies to Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign right now.

If there were a white candidate that had the same qualifications for office and a smart, statuesque wife to boot, we'd not only be hearing about it ad nauseum, he'd have a double digit lead in the polls right now.
