National Geographic 'Gender Revolution' Cover Wins ASME Reader's Choice Award

Some good news to report for transkind.

Since 2006, the American Society of Magazine Editors holds an annual Best Cover contest to determine the best magazine covers of the previous year.

The Cover of the Year was the New Yorker magazine's 'Blowhard' cover, depicting a Trump-like figure powering a sailboat by blowing into a Klansman's hood.
The New Yorker had an exceptionally good year, placing four covers in the contest's Top 10.
The 12th annual ASME Best Cover contest was contested in ten categories, and in this year's edition of it 128 magazines took part, submitting 261 covers for the ten contested categories.  Online voting via Facebook started on January 2 and lasted four weeks as more than 100 editors, art directors and photo directors judged the contest.

In the Best News and Politics cover category the January 2017 National Geographic cover for the 'Gender Revolution' issue featuring our trans kid Avery as the cover girl won the category.

But unfortunately the Nat Geo cover was edged out for the People's Choice Award for cover of the year, losing out to the Entertainment Weekly 'Let's Hear It For The Red White And Ru (yuck)  cover.

Congrats to Avery and National Geographic for the win in its category.

Y'all Know What Today Is...

Because I've been talking about it for the last two months.   

It's Election Day!  November  4.   Get the f*%k up and vote day!   Take your soul to the polls.  Vote out the stupid.  I'm not the only person in this country that wants you to do so.   I just have a bigger electronic platform to say it from.

This is it.  This election will determine the course of the nation, your state, and your locals for the next two years, so handle your electoral business.

And it's razor thin.  

I stopped trusting the polls a long time ago because they are off.   I believe not enough Black and Latino voters have been sampled.

As far as I'm concerned, the only poll that counts is the one that happens today.   So do your part and vote for the candidates in your area up and down the ballot, and pay extra close attention to the judicial ones.

You cannot afford, especially if you are a member of a marginalized community, to sit out ANY election because your human rights and the quality of your life depend upon it

The Republican Party of 2014 is not your grandfather or great-grandfather's GOP.   They wish to repeal the 20th Century.

Am I happy with the Democrats?  Nope, but I'm highly pissed off at the Republicans.  

I have been paying attention not only to their racist voter suppression policies and anti-woman and anti-POC rhetoric, I've noted the unprecedented Massive Resistance 2.0 obstruction coming from the GOP on anything that President Obama proposes to get this country moving forward.  

And in 2014 and beyond, until the GOP changes its racist tune,  I would rather have the Democrats in in power than a party that hates government and my people.

Besides, when you have one party like the Republicans that controls half the government and actively refusing to participate in governing the country, you don't reward them by giving them control of the fracking US Senate.

So go do your civic duty and vote.

The Historic Houston HERO Hearing And Vote

The combined city council meeting today starts in mere moments with the HERO on the agenda.   There will be a public comment session followed by a Houston City Council vote. 

It takes nine votes to pass anything on our 16 member city council, and Mayor Parker also gets a vote in our strong-mayor system.  Since there are over 100 plus speakers signed up (and the TransGriot is one of them) it's going to be a long time before we get to the actual vote.

We've outgunned them 247-78 in terms of pro-HERO speakers vs the anti-HERO speakers, out pastored them by a 2-1 margin and we are determined to maintain those advantages in addition to packing our art-deco era council chambers with red clad supporters. 

I'm not usually a morning person, but in order to accomplish our Houston human rights goals for today I'll do whatever is necessary to make HERO passage happen.   If it means I get my behind up at 4 AM CDT like I did this morning, so be it.   

It'll be a story I can tell my soon to be three year old niece when she asks me what I did to protect and expand her human rights.    We'll also need your prayers, wam thoughts and best wishes because the hate will be flowing from the anti-HERO side.   We will have counselors  standing by to deal with that issue and doughnuts (Shipley's of course) lunch and dinner for the marathon session to come. .

ENDA Passes Key Senate Cloture Vote

By a 61-30 margin, the US Senate passed a procedural cloture vote on the trans inclusive Employment and Non Discrimination Act (ENDA) that shuts off the chances of a Republican filibuster and allows debate on the legislation to begin on the Senate floor.

It also increases the changes that ENDA will pass when it comes up for its final vote sometime on Wednesday.

Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) was one of the first people to speak on behalf of this legislation. 




As soon as I get the list of who voted YEA and NAY, I'll add that to this post.   I already know my Texas Senate idiots both voted NAY.

It's POTUS Election Day! Handle Your Civic Business!

For those of you who had to wait until November 6 to cast your ballots in this critical and history altering 2012 presidential election, today is the day you finally get to have your say about who wins later tonight between President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. 

In case you're wondering, Dixville Notch, NH and Hart's Location, NH traditionally cast the first ballots in the 2012 election at midnight EST.   In Dixville Notch it was a 5-5 tie between the POTUS and Romney. 

In Hart's Location it wasn't even close: Obama 23, Romney 9, Johnson 2.

Don't forget to make your selections in the down ballot races for your congressional representatives, state reps, state senators, judges, councilmembers, the other races on your ballot that are vitally important as well because they also impact the quality of your life.

Dr King Was Right About The Black Vote

One of the most basic weapons in the fight for social justice will be the cumulative political power of the Negro. I can foresee the Negro vote becoming consistently the decisive vote in national elections.'

He was right, as he was about many things he commented on back during his far too brief lifetime.

 FYI, you can bet that Dr. King wasn't voting for any Republicans when he cast those ballots in the 1960 and 1964 presidential elections.

The power of the Black vote is why conservatives have spent millions, colluded with each other, plotted, schemed, wrote voter suppression laws, litigated, violated the 1965 Voting Rights Act and unleashed every dirty trick possible to ensure the power of your vote doesn't decide tomorrow's election. 


Guess we should be flattered that the vanillacentric conservafool movement is so 'scurred' of the African-American vote that they would go to all that effort keep a Black man from getting another four years at a job he's done exceedingly well.

You also have to consider that despite their best Massive Resistance 2.0 efforts to frack with him and make him a one term president, President Obama is still standing and has compiled the best first term legislative record of achievement since FDR and LBJ. .

Well, we need to be tough minded enough as Dr King would say to do what we can to ensure they wasted their megamillions in that futile effort to fear and smear this POTUS, and they fail tomorrow.

And yes, the Black electorate is highly pissed about you conservafools trying to suppress our ability to vote and political payback will be a rhymes with itch. We can't let you take this country back to the 19th century and roll back our hard won civil rights without a fight.

And tomorrow, you will see what Dr. King presciently foresaw play itself out again at the ballot box.   

Piss Off A Conservafool-Vote

We have less than 24 hours until the polls open for an election in which we have two divergent paths for our nation with such stark clarity that even Stevie Wonder can see where they lead and what the ramifications are for the United States

We can either vote to continue the progress we've made under President Obama toward building an America that works for everybody, or you can vote for a lying political shape shifter who.in his own words doesn't care about 47% of the population.

Your call.   But the bottom line is that you need to get your azz out of bed on November 6 and handle your civic business.   You can damned sure bet that the people who want to bring the GW Bush policies of the last decade back will be in line tomorrow.

You need to be too so this country can move forward and not backwards to the 19th century.


 

Last Day To Early Vote In Texas

If you haven't done so yet, today is your last opportunity to early vote in the Lone Star State from 7 AM to 7 PM, so head over to your nearest early voting polling center and get you vote on. 

If you don't do it today, you'll have to wait until Tuesday since the Republifools erased the last weekend before the election because they're 'scurred' of non-white turnout.
