Scarlett Johansson, This Is A Trans Role You Appropriated, Not A Cis Feminine One

Image result for scarlett johansson age
Scarlett Johansson obviously didn't get the message in 2016 when she took a whitewashed Major Motoko Kusanagi role that should have gone to an Asian actress in the movie Ghost In The Shell.  That pissed off fans of the manga looking forward to seeing it on the silver screen, and the movie subsequently tanked at the box office.

Now Johansson is slated to play trans man Dante 'Tex' Gill in the upcoming crime drama Rub & Tug directed by Rupert Sanders, the same person who cast her in the failed Ghost In The Shell movie.

Tex Gill in the1970's and 1980's operated massage parlors in Pittsburgh that served as fronts for prostitution.   Gill also lived his life as a trans man, which is why we're tripping about Johansson getting this role.

Why this latest casting controversy has the trans community pissed off is because once again, we have a cisgender actor playing a transgender role.  In this case the actor has an unrepentant history of cultural appropriation

Two high profile transgender actresses in Trace Lysette and Jamie Clayton took to Twitter to put Johansson and Hollywood on blast for it.

"Oh word? So you can continue to play us but we can't play y'all?" Lysette wrote on her Twitter feed in reaction to Johansson's casting.  "Hollywood is so fucked.  I wouldn't be as upset if I was getting in the same roms as Jennifer Lawrence and Scarlett for cis roles, but we know that is not the case.  A mess."

"And not only do you play us and steal our narrative and our opportunity but you pat yourselves on the back with trophies and accolades for mimicking what we have lived,"

Clayton echoed the same thoughts in her Twitter commentary about the jacked up casting .
"Actors who are trans never even get to audition for anything other than roles of trans characters.  That's the real issue.  We can't even get in the room.  Cast actors who are trans as non trans characters, I dare you."
Trace and Jamie are both correct.  If the same reciprocity in being cast for cisgender roles was regularly extended to transgender Hollywood actors, we wouldn't be complaining about this casting of Johansson now.

But the equitable Hollywood casting for trans actors isn't happening at this time, and Hollywood casting directors, directors and studios know it.  To add insult to injury, cisgender actors are getting awards for doing so while perpetuating a 'men in dresses' stereotype that leads to trans women getting violently assaulted while Hollywood pats itself on the back at awards time.

And now Hollywood is handing trans masculine roles to cis women that should be played by trans masculine and nonbinary actors.  This is also reinforcing a stereotype trans men have to constantly fight in that they are really butch women.

Johansson poured more gasoline on the casting controversy by dismissively citing actors who have gotten awards for playing trans characters in a weak attempt to defend herself.

"Tell them that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto and Felicity Huffman's reps for comment," Johansson said in a statement obtained by Bustle.

Naw boo boo kitty, not gonna work.   Even Tambor recognized the problem with casting cis people in trans roles when he accepted his second Emmy in 2016.

"I'm not going to say this beautifully: To you people out there ... please give transgender talent a chance. Give them auditions. Give them their story," Tambor said in his Emmy acceptance speech.
"I would be happy if I were the last cisgender male to play a transgender female," he added.
The bottom line is that trans actors are beyond sick and tired of not getting fair shots at auditioning for or getting roles written for cisgender people.  But you cis people get cast all day for the limited trans roles available with the weak excuse of 'we need a box office name to help this movie get made'.

Tangerine didn't have a box office name when they cast trans actress Mya Taylor as Alexandra.  The movie that cost $100,000 to make made $924,793 and received several awards, including a Spirit Award  for Taylor.

Don't even try to peddle the 'we couldn't find a trans masculine actor' lie.   Let's see, there's Scott Turner Schofield, Ian Harvie, Chaz Bono, Emmett Jack Lundberg and nonbinary actor Ellie Desautels for starters.

So naw Scarlett, this Tex Gill role is made for a trans masculine actor.   What's going to happen with you in it is the same thing that happened to Ghost In The Shell.  Your appropriating appearance in it will cause this film to get boycotted and tank at the box office.

I Repeat: White People Doing Blackface Drag Is Not Acceptable, Period!

Canadian drag queen Daytona Bitch is being accused of racism. And for once, it isn't the odious Chuck Knipp and his Shirley Q. Liquor 'act' I'm slamming for trying to do it.

This latest episode of white person who didn't get the memo that white people doing blackface drag is never appropriate is Toronto drag queen Daytona Bitch.

He has his draws in a knot because he was fired from a gig during the recent Toronto Pride for performing in blackface.

He was allegedly imitating Miss Cleo from the Psychic Hotline commercials of the late 90's-early 2K's at the Crews & Tango  nightclub in Toronto.

The June 24 performance generated a lot of angrily contentious discussion on Twitter with the clueless Daytona Bitch trying to defend along with his fans the jacked up performance.

"I asked a couple people if it was offensive because it’s not blackface in my eyes,” Daytona Bitch says. “I went to theater school. I know what blackface is. It was not a minstrel show. I was doing a character.

Whitesplaining segment over, time for Moni to school your azz right now on the subject.

Sure it's not offensive or blackface in your eyes because you're wallowing in vanillacentric privilege.  And if you claim to know what blackface is, why did you go ahead with that performance anyway?

Obviously none of those people you asked in that club were Black Canadians, because they would have told your vanillacentric privileged behind what I'm about to say in this post right now.

Blackface has been used to denigrate, demean and dehumanize Black people across the African Diaspora for over 180 years.  It's why African descended people in North America have highly negative views toward it that haven't and won't change even in the second decade of the 21st century.

It's also why North American Black people have a zero tolerance policy toward any manifestation of white people in blackface, whether it is maliciously racist or not.

We don't care if you are a drag performer, a model doing a high fashion photo shoot, somebody doing so as a badly thought out Halloween costume or drunken white college kids perpetuating negative stereotypes of African descended people in the name of fun and frivolity.   You need to get it through your vanillacentric privileged minds blackface is offensive to African descended people and there is no justification in our chococentic minds for doing so.

Daytona BitchAnd you knew it too, which is why you and your fans are trying to whitesplain this away. BTW Daytona, since you got paid for that performace, it does qualify as blackface since you made money off the dehumanization of my people.

You don't get to tell my POC community as a member of the ethnic group that exercises power in this society (deleteriously at times to my community) what is or isn't offensive.  We have repeatedly told you Blackface is one of those things that IS offensive to us on both sides of the 49th parallel, so hear us loud and clear when we say that.

And don't even try to bring up the Wayans Brothers White Chicks movie, Tyler Perry as Madea, Martin Lawrence as 'Big Momma', Eddie Murphy in Norbit, Whoopi Goldberg, or RuPaul's sellout azz into this conversation in order to defend blackface.

Don't bother parting your lips to say that tired, 'we need to lighten up about it' line or try to claim 'it's a costume' either.

My people and my culture are not costumes you put on for your or your people's entertainment.

I repeat, white people doing blackface, whether it is malicious or not is NEVER acceptable so don't do it unless you like being called out about it.

Class dismissed.

Dear Demi Sexual, Trans Ethnic,Trans Abled, Trans Fat and Other Fakers

'Angry Birds' photo (c) 2011, Denis Dervisevic - license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/ Guest Post From Renee of Womanist Musings that I'm definitely going to have to piggyback on.  But first I need to get over my pissivity for these fools appropriation of the language of the trans community and trans human rights movement to fight our very real societal oppression.

Over the weekend, Sparky introduced me to a few new faux social justice terms that had me absolutely screaming mad.  I have not been able to get them out of my mind and so I warn you, this is going to be a rant.  It all started when he sent me a link to ONTD_Political.
What started as a movement by people who are suffering to try to help those of us who are privileged to understand their struggle has now become a mockery, hijacked by people whose only tangible shared problem could be described — and recognized by anyone with common sense — as social ineptitude.

They sit, watching equal rights discussions, hearing the terminology and logic, and take it for their own purposes. They quote famous activists far out of context to add that elusive air of legitimacy where it just doesn’t exist. By carefully and secretly treating their “fight” as equal to racism, transphobia, homophobia and classism, they worm their way into the real issues and cleverly tilt words designed to protect to disregard those who are at actual risk for losing their jobs and their lives.

Ever hear of otherkin, or otakukin? They refer to people who “identify” as animals or anime characters. I’m pretty open, do whatever you want as long as you’re not bugging me. According to some, though, lack of widespread acceptance of otherkin is contributing to mass otherkin oppression. Oh? Otherkin are being rounded up from their homes and killed? No? Are they being fired from jobs for being otherkin? Not that either, huh? Are they at least being disproportionately arrested and thrown in jail with sentences 60% longer than non-otherkin? Well then what IS going on? They’re… being ostracized on the internet. Oh.

But otherkin and their ilk have been around for ever. Try googling “Final Fantasy VII House.” Pick a time to read when you have a few free hours and a lot of booze. Now, there are newer, even more mockable “oppressions” coming out. You’ve heard of transgender and transsexual, let me introduce you to the new trans people: transabled and transethnic. Transabled people are disabled people hiding out in perfectly working bodies. They “identify” as blind, deaf, paraplegic and quadriplegic despite having never been so a day in their entire lives, and are well-known for talking about how hard it is to want to be disabled but unable to be. Transethnic people are white people who “identify” as a non-white race or ethnicity. They’re weeaboos multiplied by a million, with bonus “I learned about your culture in a book I read once so I know more than you.” [source]
I thought that this was a sick joke, until Sparky sent me a link about a White man who identifies as trans ethnic. He has decided that he is a black woman on the inside. Seriously, you have to read this shit. Despite all evidence to the contrary, he claims to be oppressed by Black women who have the nerve to question his identity.

First, I want to address the idea that they use the word trans in front of their fake identity.  I am a cisgender woman; however, I find this appropriation of the trans experience, so that these people can claim to be marginalized disgusting.  Trans* communities struggle for acceptance and the right to live their lives in the gender that best suits them. From what I understand, the process of both self acceptance and community acceptance is a difficult process and what these people claim to go through is nothing like the daily struggle of being trans* in a cissexist world.  They are not going to be denied jobs, housing and subjected to violence because they are trans ethnic, tran fat, transabled etc,. These people aren't actually transitioning, they are appropriating.

These fake trans people have even come up with a term for the rest of us who don't have their so-called problems - singlets. Apparently, all of us walking around without a desire to appropriate from marginalized people have singlet privilege. As a Black woman, I also have cisethnic privilege because I identify to the racial group into which I was born.  Isn't that just fucking special. This is nothing more than White people wanting to claim that they are oppressed, while showing their damn arse to the world. If you are White, you are not now, or ever have been racially oppressed.  You can't just learn a few words in a language other than English, and read a few books, then declare yourself an expert on someone else's race.  This is beyond the height of arrogance and is the absolute definition of appropriation. The concept of race in a biological sense is most certainly a social construction; however, being a person of colour in a White supremacist world is not an identity that one can just choose. We are all born raced, but races that fall outside of the definition of Whiteness are stigmatized.

They will twist, turn and say anything to justify their fake identities.  In this link, there is actually a comparison between being transabled and being trans*, suggesting of course that they are very similar. These people need to just stop.  No seriously, STOP.  I know that some of these people have Body Integrity Identity Disorder, but sure as shit, there are people who aren't neurologically atypical who believe that they are disabled on the inside.  If they had any sense of what it is to live in pain, or to be denied accommodations, employment, housing, erased from the media, determined to be automatically asexual, infantalized etc., would they really feel like this??  Being disabled is hard and it is not something that should be reduced, so that someone can pretend to be oppressed.

As for you demi-sexuals, stop posting shit about coming out as demi-sexual to your parents.  Do you really believe in a heteronormative world that your folks are going to have a fucking conniption because you prescribe to the most vanilla version of sexuality ever?  Really?  You are not oppressed because you claim to only be sexually attracted to people you have a romantic relationship with.  What you are is vanilla and I don't recall ever seeing an article about a demi-sexual being bashed for being demi, or asked to vacate a public space, criminalized etc,.

And finally to the trans fat people.  I don't care if you think you weigh 1000lbs on the inside,  you can still walk into any clothing store and buy whatever the fuck you want within your class bracket.  You can eat in public without people staring at you.  When you go to the grocery store, people aren't commenting about what's in your cart.  You can wear a swimsuit without someone commenting about how the size or shape of your body disgusts them.  When you go to the doctor, you don't have to hear about how the death fatz is killing you, even as everything else about you is healthy and normal.  In short, shut up!

I wish this was some sort of sick internet joke, but the more I read about these faux trans people, the more I have learned that this has become a serious thing.  It disgusts me on so many levels that it is hard for me to be coherent.  Being marginalized means being oppressed in real and systemic ways.  It's an identity that people don't put on for shits and giggles and something we have to struggle with from the moment we open our eyes in the morning, until we go to bed at night. It means in many cases that we die earlier from the stress of dealing with the oppression we face.  For these faux trans people, this is just some sort of cute game, so that they can pretend to oppressed, engage in fake outrage and further attack us, even as they walk around with all of the privilege in the world. These identities don't belong to you and they never will.  It seems to me that all they want is the good that comes with our identities without experiencing any of the bad -  too bad life just isn't like that.

PETA Racism Strikes Again

Y'all know I can't stand People Eating Tasty Animals, oops the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals fools.  It's not only because of their constant racist, sexist, transphobic, fatphobic, homophobic (pick one) fail in pushing their message, it's also run by Ingrid Newkirk who is best buds with FOX Noise's Bill O'Reilly.

Fresh off trying to pick a fight with Flavor Flav over his fried chicken restaurant in Iowa, the PETAoids have once again tried to appropriate African-American history and icons in order to pimp their agenda after we have repeatedly told their vanilla privileged behinds to refrain from doing that.

Flav's new yardbird venture is now closed because of some trouble back in April with some employee paychecks that bounced and disputes with his partner's business practices that resulted in its closure.

This latest episode of PETA failing badly has them according to BET.com putting up a six sided display across from the Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. that compares animal cruelty to slavery, complete with images of cruelty to African-Americans and the Dr. King “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere” quote

The NAACP called PETA's azzes out in 2005 over a traveling exhibit entitled: "Are Animals the New Slaves?" that compared images of lynched African-Americans to slaughtered cows.

They were also called out for wearing Klan hoods to the Westminster Dog Show in New York and comparing it to the Holocaust.

Come to think of it, they engage in this racist crap so often the Klan needs to make PETA an auxiliary chapter

"Once again, Black people are being pimped. You used us. You have used us enough.” then NAACP president of Greater New Haven chapters Scot X. Esdaile said at the opening of that 2005 exhibit there that raised the ire of African Americans in the area.

The historical oppression of African Americans disrespectfully being used repeatedly in PETA campaigns needs to cease and desist.   Until y'all permanently quit doing so, KFC will continue to get my money.

On that note, off to the Colonel for a three piece..
