Happy Turkey Day 2019

I have received an early Christmas present in terms of being able to be in Louisville breaking bread for the first time in a decade with my chosen family and friends. 

And no, this time we're not having a turducken as we did one Thanksgiving, but then again I wouldn't be surprised it Dawn pulled one out of the oven for this dinner we're going to happily scarf down in few hours.

While I'm getting to spend the day (and this week) with my chosen family, and know I'll be spending Christmas with my blood family, I realize on this day I am blessed to do so.   Most trans people go into the holidays not able to have holiday dinners with their families.

If you find yourself in that situation today, find your chosen family and break bread with them.   If you're hosting a Thanksgiving dinner, hope that you take the opportunity to reach out to trans folks who are home for the holidays with no place to go.

In a few hours, I'll be engaging in another |cherished holiday tradition of hating on my favorite NFL turkeys, the Dallas Cowboys while I eat dinner and hoping they get carved up by the opposition.

Ugh, had my second losing week of the season after being on the wrong side of several close games and that Rams-Chiefs shootout in LA

At least the Texans won their seventh straight game and will go for their eighth consecutive win against the despised Tennessee Traitors on Monday night.

It's Turkey Day, and the games scheduled are anything but turkeys in the Bears-Lions, Cowboys-Washington and Saints-Falcons.

Happy Turkey Day 2017

Well, the planet is still here for now and we've made it to Thanksgiving 2017 despite 45.

One thing we can definitely give thanks for is that Trump hasn't blown the planet up yet as he continues to piss off Kim Jong Fool and the Iranians

For those of you breaking break with your families, be they your blood or chosen family members,  consider yourself blessed in that regard. 

I'm also thankful that I have a few options on the table in terms of choosing where I get to eat today.  I'm also thinking about the people who don't.   If you can, open your dinner table to someone who will probably be alone on this day.

Going to take a well deserved chill out day.  If something inspires me to write that I must put up as a post, you'll probably see it.   But more likely I'll be back to doing my normal posting schedule tomorrow. 

If you are traveling either a short distance or across the country for that Thanksgiving dinner, may the dinner be  tasty, you company be enjoyable, and you have safe travels to and from your final destination.

It's a bittersweet Thanksgiving for many of us in Trans World today.

While we've made some amazing progress this year, the adverse results of the 2016 presidential election will put much of that progress at rsk starting on January 20 with an incoming (yuck) Republican administration  

But today, not going to focus on that looming political drama, will have time to do that later.  I'm going to just focus on counting my blessings.

I am blessed to have good health, loyal friends, and my family blood and chosen in my life.  I have had the blessings in 2016 of traveling to every corner of the country except the Pacific Northwest and the southeast US.

I have been blessed with multiple awards and making history in getting one of them.  I have in 2016  stood inside the White House (for the fifth time), on the campus of Harvard University, outside of the site of San Francisco's Compton's Cafeteria, and on the historic Chautauqua Institution amphitheater stage with Janet Mock.

I got to attend Creating Change for the third consecutive year, the Black Trans Advocacy Conference at their new hotel, the Philly Trans Health Conference and Netroots Nation for the first time since 2012 and another Texas Transgender Nondiscrimination Summit as its keynote speaker.  I even got the opportunity on Election Night to talk politics on live television on a TV station I grew up watching in ABC13.

One of the blessings I received in 2016 is getting to meet and talk to our trans youth in Houston and around the country along with their amazing parents.

The blessing I want for our community here in the United States and around the world is to have our humanity and human rights recognized, respected and protected .

Don't know yet what 2017 has in store for me besides some trips to Austin staring in January, but hope I finally get to meet more of the transpeople on my bucket list like Lauren Foster and Caroline Cossey for starters, get to speak at a few more events on college campuses, keynote some conferences, and finally get to put my GLAAD media training and Pundit Cup Championship punditry skills to good use on behalf of this community on a regular basis.

And oh yeah, did I mention the amazing people in my life that I call my friends?

Happy Thanksgiving people!   May your holiday meal be tasty, the people you share it with be full of grace and good cheer, and you have safe travels to and from your holiday destinations.

And for those of you who will not be breaking bread with your families, may you do so with chosen family, friends and people who love you..

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving 2016!

Happy Thanksgiving to my Canadian readers and friends north of the border!   I know you're taking the time to step away from Timmy's and chow down on some turkey and other holiday favorites as you count your blessings in this year.

And one of those blessings is Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.   The Conservatives don't think so, but the rest of the planet thinks your current PM is a vast improvement over The Sweater Vest.

For my trans family in the Great White North, you are watching the progress of C-16 through your national legislature, and witnessed another province in British Columbia protect the human rights of its transgender citizens.

Happy Thanksgiving Day!   May the food you sit down to eat with friends and family be tasty, your travels to and from your holiday destinations be drama free and safe in both directions, and you continue to have a blessings filled rest of the year.

Happy Thanksgiving peeps!  Today is the day in which we get our grub on and give thanks for the blessings we have received this year.

It has been an up and down year for me in that department.  While I've been blessed to finally restart my HRT, it also came with finding out that I'd blown up to 275 pounds, my blood pressure was elevated and I was too close to crossing over into diabetic territory.  But it led to me dropping 35 pounds and changing my diet to make that happen.   I'm getting closer to my goal of being down to 210 pounds, and I'm much happier these days now that I'm back to consistently being on my hormones.

Now if only that positivity would cross over into my dating life.

TransGriot is not only approaching its 10th anniversary on January 1, I passed the 6 million hit milestone this year.  Still trying to figure out how I wish to celebrate that 10th anniversary

It also continues to get attention as an informative go to blog, and I thank you TransGriot readers for that.   Megathanks also to those of you who drop some change from time to time in the TransGriot Tip Jar.

I was also blessed to get to attend and participate in a few major conferences this year.  I got to attend Creating Change for the second straight year in Denver, another LGBT Media Journalists Convening that happened in Philly, an anti violence conference in Chicago that coincided with the reveal of this year's Trans 100, the Black Trans Advocacy Conference in Dallas, and OUT on the Hill in DC for the first time since 2012 along with invitations to speak or participate in panels here and elsewhere around the country.

It was an honor, pleasure and a blessing to go to Fantasia Fair for the first time ever and make a little history as the first African-American transperson to be given the Virginia Prince Transgender Pioneer Award.  

I also got to head to the White House again and see some of my trans family at different events and conferences.   I look forward to the next time I get to spend some quality time with y'all at another event inside or outside the Houston area in 2016.

Speaking of family, I realize the holiday season can be a serious downer for many members of the trans family who have been rejected by their blood family.  Their loss.   Do yourselves a favor and hang out today and during this 2015 holiday season with your chosen family and people who unconditionally love you.

And trans fam, be looking out for our trans peeps that may be feeling depressed.  If you can, spend some quality time with them.  You may be preventing a suicide by doing so.

Happy Thanksgiving Day!

No American TransGriot readers, this isn't a typo.  In case you weren't aware of it, our Canadian cousins get their Turkey Day grub on during the second Monday in October instead of the fourth Thursday in November we celebrate it on.

As Canadians settle down at dinner tables across their nation to partake in those delicious Thanksgiving meals, they will do so knowing that next Monday they will be heading to the polls for a federal election.

On October 19 our Canadian cousins will be voting to determine which party, the NDP, the Liberals, or the Conservatives will get the lion's share of the now 338 seats up for grabs in the House of Commons, with 170 seats being the magic number needed to gain majority control of the House.

Just wanted to take a moment to wish all my friends and my north of the border TransGriot readers a Happy Thanksgiving!

May your food be tasty , the company eating it with you delightful, and your travels to and from your Thanksgiving destinations be safe and drama free.

Happy Thanksgiving Day TransGriot readers!

Turkey Day 2014 has turned out to be a little different than I expected it to be.   In addition to now living in a new place, I moved into it just last Monday.  

I'm also now looking at the stress inducing prospect of having to break bread with the two transphobic relatives who caused the drama in the first place.

Well, I'm planning on breaking bread elsewhere on Turkey Day because the crap they put me through is still too raw emotionally for me to be able to sit across the table from them. 

But for those of you in non-stressful family situations, be it with chosen or blood family, hope you are having a wonderful holiday full of good grub while surrounded by good people. 

Despite how it happened, I am thankful today for the roof over my head and the local, national and international help that made it a reality.  I'm thankful for relatively good health, my friends and supportive family, and all those people that I've met during this amazing year.

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving 2014, Eh!

Today is Thanksgiving day north of the border.   All my readers across Canada are taking time out of their lives to count their blessings and get their grub on.

Definitely need to give my Canadian homegirl Renee and her family a shoutout.

After spending over a decade in Niagara Falls, they recently moved to St. Catharines and will be spending their first Thanksgiving having dinner in their new home.

Congratulations on the move.  May this be the first of many happy Thanksgiving dinners and family memories in your new domicile.

While we have yet to see passage of C-279, the Trans Rights Law that has been stalled in the Conservative dominated Senate, it has passed Second Reading stage and is now in committee.   Here's hoping my Canadian trans cousins see their home and native land recognize their human rights.

To my Canadian trans peeps, I hope you have the additional blessing of breaking bread and sharing your Thanksgiving meal with your blood family.  If that's not possible, I hope and pray it's with your chosen family or supportive friends who have opened their doors and their dinner table to you.

And if you are in the position to open your home to a fellow transperson who may not for whatever reason be able to go home to their family, I hope you are able to share your Thanksgiving Day with them.

And to all my Canadian readers, may the food that nourishes your bodies be accompanied by abundant love and smiles.

What I'm Thankful For In 2013

At this moment I'm chilling at my mom's house and probably have a turkey wing (left side) stuck in my mouth along with the other food Mom and my sis Latoya prepared for me, the family and friends who stop by the house to scarf it up on this day and spend time with us. 

When I sit down for a moment and peruse it, I do have a lot of things and blessings to be thankful for in 2013.  The obvious ones are I'm still standing 6 feet above my beloved Texas soil and I'm in reasonably good health.  I could stand to lose a few pounds, but whose counting calories on this day and on the upcoming Festival of Conspicuous Consumerism (Christmas Day) when it takes place in just 28 days?

I'm thankful for my award winning and internationally read blog that has garnered over 5.2 million hits since I started it on New Year's Day 2006.   It has provided me with a powerful platform to express myself, get things done, advocate for positive change and uplift a people who need it. 

I'm thankful for everyone who showers me with love on this day and every day.  I'm thankful that you emphatically let me know you have my back and sincerely want to see me become the best person I can be. I'm thankful to the people who not only expand my cognitive horizons, expose me to new ideas and ways to think about things, but respectfully challenge my world views so that I don't slide into as my little sis Jordana calls it, 'lazy thought' territory.

I'm thankful for my cis sisters who have opened their hearts and their arms wide to welcome me into the sisterhood over the last 19 years.  Many you have given me a swift kick in the butt when I needed it over the years, helped me along my own evolutionary path to womanhood, as my homegirls (and you know who you are) pushed me to be better and helped me become the quality Black woman I want and continue to seek to be.   

I'm thankful I have the love and respect of my trans community.  You let me know when I'm out and about whether interacting with you in person, at TBLG community events, on college campuses, in our phone or chat conversations or at conferences how much you appreciate the fighting I've done for trans human rights on our behalf since 1998

I'm thankful to you trans brothers who showered me with love in Dallas and have continued to do so post-BTMI as I observe your evolution into becoming the leaders and men we knew you were capable of becoming.  

I'm thankful that Barack Obama is still our president until 2017, Wendy Davis and Leticia Van de Putte are running for governor and lieutenant governor of Texas next year and Annise Parker is Houston's mayor until 2016.  
 
I'm even thankful for my haters, who know who they are.  Y'all motivate me to do the things you say I can't do, be the person you say I can't be, and despite you  actively working to oppose my efforts to accomplish those tasks, I still rise.

So yes, I have a lot to be thankful for today and in the remaining days of 2013.  I hope 2014 is even better..

Today is Thanksgiving Day, which we give thanks for all the blessings that we have received this year and spend time with family and loved ones.

One of the blessings I have received is your love and support for my blog.   You tell me when I'm out and about in the community just how much you appreciate what I do.

And I thank those of you who from time to time will drop change on the TransGriot Tip Jar.
  
The holidays are usually the toughest time for trans and LGB pees who may be estranged from their blood families, so let's be extra vigilant during this time of year to reach out to out TBLG peeps who may be emotionally vulnerable.

For those of you who aren't around your families and lamenting that, don't.   The best way to deal with that situation is create your own family chock full of the people who love, honor and appreciate you in their lives. During this holiday season break bread with your chosen family and create holiday memories with them..

And if you're feeling down or depressed, call someone.   Suicide is never the answer.  Your best revenge is to live your life and be radically successful at it in terms you define.

So Happy Thanksgiving Day!    I'm going to take the day off to hang out with the peeps who love and appreciate me, and will be back tomorrow to carve up some jive turkeys in my weekly Shut Up Fool post.

But if I feel moved to write something  or some breaking news happens that I must get out there, you'll see something today on the blog.

Today is Thanksgiving on the other side of the long 5525 mile boarder (including Alaska) that we share with our northern neighbors.   My Canadian friends are sitting down at their dinner tables to get their grub on and give thanks for the many blessings they have received this year.

One of the blessings I receive from you is that out of the top ten nations that surf to my blog, you are number two in terms of the number of people who surf over here to read my posts just ahead of Great Britain.  I thank you Canadian TransGriot readers for taking the time out of your busy day to surf over to the blog. 

And yes, there is my cadre of wonderful cis and trans friends and blogging colleagues that span the country from British Columbia to Alberta to Newfoundland and Labrador. 

And most definitely have to give thanks for the enduring friendship and constantly evolving sisterhood I share with my Timmy's Icecapp drinking homegirl in Niagara Falls.

After the scary news we heard about her earlier this year, so happy that Renee's not only made a remarkable recovery from her health challenge, but is dispensing her thoughtful commentary and wisdom in the social justice blogosphere and at Womanist Musings once again.     

And as a bonus, I get to chat with her about the latest 'Scandal' episodes, Canadian, American and international politics, fashion, human rights, our lives and a wide range of topics on a regular basis.  

The Canadian Parliament is reconvening after Thanksgiving, so we will see what transpires with C-279, the Trans Rights Bill that because of the prorogation of Parliament, has to start over at First Stage in the Senate legislative process.  It reached Third Stage before the Conservative Senate majority stalled it long enough for them to go on summer break in June without taking that final vote.

Will C-279 finally pass and codify the human rights of my Canadian trans cousins?   We'll see if the Senate does the right thing or the right-wing thing..

But we can discuss that later.   I know you're beyond ready to start carving into your Thanksgiving turkeys, ham (or vegan fare) and get busy eagerly devouring that delicious meal with family and friends.

Happy Thanksgiving 2012

Happy Thanksgiving TransGriot readers!   My Canadian readers back in October got their grub on, and now it's time for me and my TransGriot readers in the States to do the same thing. 

We liberal progressives (and the trans community) are already giving thanks (along with the rest of the planet) to the fact we will have President Barack Obama leading our nation until 2017. 

Say a prayer for the trans folks in our community who are estranged from their family.   To you transpeople in that situation, make lemonade out of that lemon situation.  Find the people that love and unconditionally care about you,  make them your chosen family and start your own holiday traditions until your blood family come to their senses.

While I've had an up and down year personally, I do have a lot to be thankful for including having a roof over my head, friends and family in my life, being relatively healthy, making it to my 50th birthday a few months ago and several invitations to enjoy Thanksgiving hospitality.

I'm planning on taking the day off from blogging, getting my grub on, watching my Texans play the Detroit Lions in the AM NFL Turkey Day game and hatin' on the Cowchips in the midday one.

Hey, I'm a Houstonian.  We live for watching Dallas teams lose. 

If something moves me to write, you may see a post today besides my weekly NFL picks one.  Otherwise it's back to the normal posting schedule Friday including what turkeys I'm going to carve up for my Shut Up Fool weekly awards.  .

North of the 49th parallel, today is Thanksgiving Day in the Great White North.    My Canadian readers are enjoying their long holiday weekend, getting their grub on and giving thanks for their many blessings they have received this year. 

Two of the blessings I receive from your side of the border is the continued love of my homegirl Renee, the brilliant editrix of Womanist Musings and her family.

I also have the blessing of you Canadian TransGriot readers.

You let me know how much you appreciate my blog and the times I do cover trans events that happen on the northern side of the 49th parallel.   Thanks to those of you who send me the tips and links so I can provide Canada specific posts for you. .

I don't doubt there are more than a few Canadian trans people who are giving thanks in Ontario, Manitoba and Alberta for the trans human rights victories they won.   I also note on this Thanksgiving Day that C-279, the Trans Rights Bill is making progress through the House despite Conservative opposition. 

My hope and prayer for my trans Canadian brothers and sisters is that you have more success in your home and native land gaining your human rights, you continue to blaze new trails like Jenna Talackova did and I'm blessed to write about when it occurs.

Happy Thanksgiving TransGriot Readers

You Canadian TransGriot readers got your Thanksgiving grub on last month and today is the day that I and the rest of us in the States get to do so.

We get our opportunity to partake in getting our grub on, watching football with family and friends, being thankful for the blessings I and the peeps I love have have received this year and being thankful that Barack Obama is the POTUS and not a Republifool.

I also get to see how well I did picking the three NFL games that will happen later today. 

Wanted to take a moment to wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving since I'm planning on taking a break from the computer for the day.   May you have abundant blessings, tasty food, pleasant company, minimal drama  and safe travels to and from your holiday destinations.

If there is any breaking news that warrants me interrupting my turkeyfest to post, or I just have some thought that pops into my head I've got to share with you, it'll get posted.  .

Safe Thanksgiving Journeys To My TransGriot Readers

Today is one of the busiest travel days in the United States.  People are converging on airports, train and bus stations or hitting the interstates to go to whatever final destination they are traveling to for Thanksgiving dinner or saying bump it and taking a mini vacation.

I used to dread this period when I worked in the airline biz, but didn't hate on the paycheck because the floodgates got opened on all the overtime and the personnel we needed to efficiently get through it.  

Besides, there were some humorous moments that came out of it at times.  My coworkers and nice passengers also made it bearable and fun to do so. 

Wednesday was a pain, but Thanksgiving Day itself and Saturday were slow and made up for the drama we had to deal with on Monday, Tuesday and today.   

I wanted to take this moment to wish you TransGriot readers in the States who are either traveling to your ultimate destination, see your family and friends or are about to do so, safe journeys up there and back to wherever you're getting your grub on.

And when you do arrive at your Thanksgiving destination get there, may your food be tasty and your day be drama free as well.

Today is Thanksgiving Day for my Canadian readers and my homegirls in Newfoundland and Ontario. I wanted to take a moment and show y'all some love as you folks spend this day with family and friends.

Hope you've had a great year (know they did in Winnipeg now they have their beloved Jets back) and you have plenty of delicious food to eat with all the trimmings on your holiday table.

Today is also a day we take stock of our blessings, and even though I won't get to do that over a turkey until next month, one of the blessings I'm thankful for is the enduring friendship of Renee and Paula.  I'm also thankful to all of you who spend your valuable websurfing time in the Great White North and elsewhere around the world perusing my blog.     

Thank you for showing me the love, and Happy Thanksgiving to you!.

Wanted to take a moment to wish all of my north of the border TransGriot readers a very happy Thanksgiving Day, Canadian style.

For those of you who aren't aware of it, once upon a time our Canadian cousins used to celebrate it in November. The Canadian Parliament in 1879 declared November 6 as a day of Thanksgiving and a national holiday. Over the years the date moved around and changed to become the third Monday in October.

The current fixed celebration date is a result of a January 31, 1957 proclamation by the Canadian Parliament.

'A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed.....to be observed on the second Monday in October.'

Ever since then it has been celebrated by our Canadian cousins on the second Monday in October. We Americans get our Thanksgiving grub on during the fourth Thursday of next month.

Hopefully that sheds some light on why we celebrate it at different times.

To my Canadian homegirl Renee, my former coworker, good friend and transplanted Newfie Paula, Michelle, Veronique, Linus, Mercedes and all my friends in the Great White North, may you and all your families have a blessed and low stress day filled with love, abundant blessings, and plentiful and tasty food. May you also have safe travels to and from your Thanksgiving holiday destinations.

That also applies for the rest of you Canucks reading this as well.

As you pause to take stock for all the blessings in your lives, I want to take a moment to thank you for surfing by TransGriot on a regular basis.

I know you Canadians got your Thanksgiving grub on last month. Now it's your south of the border cousins turn to partake of the turkey and dressing or whatever graces your dining table.

It's been an up and down year for me so far, but overall I have much to be thankful for. The trans community has seen the passage of one of our legislative crown jewels in the Byrd-Shepard Hate Crimes Bill and may get ENDA passed as well.

While violence against transpeople around the world spiked up, I'm still prayerfully hopeful that with the increased education and acceptance that will end.

Happy Thanksgiving, Renee (And All My Canadian Trans Peeps and Readers)

One of the wonderful things about the Internet is that no wonder where you live, from the comfort of your home you can take an informational journey around the world.

I've been blessed to have a lot of readers from Canada who peruse this blog. It's a fact I'm very proud of since I do have a broad international view of the transgender rights struggle.

Our Canadian cousins celebrate Thanksgiving on the second Monday in October. So on the occasion of my Canadian cousins getting their grub on today and giving thanks for the blessings in their lives, I wanted to take a moment to say thanks to my Canadian readers for spending your valuable web surfing time reading TransGriot.

I wanted to say a special thanks on this day to a person who has become a close friend and homegirl in Renee and her family. You have been a blessing in my life this year, and I give thanks to the Creator on this day for you being in mine.

Unfortunately one of the things at your dinner table won't be me or the cornbread recipe I owe you.

I also thank you for being a staunch ally and being in mine and the rest of the trans community's corner.

I also give thanks to peeps like Mercedes Allen, Dr. Miqqi Alicia Gilbert, Michelle Dumaresq, Linus, Micheline Montreuil, Victoria Stuart, Veronique, Elizabeth Tyler and countless other Canadian trans peeps and their allies. You are all doing your parts to fight for the rights of transpeople who reside inside the Great White North.
