Arrest Made In Zapata Killing

According to KUSA-TV, the waste of DNA who killed Angie Zapata has been found.

They are reporting that 32 year old Allen Ray Andrade, was arrested in Thornton on Tuesday and faces second-degree murder and aggravated motor vehicle theft charges.

He was on a date with Angie and when the suspect discovered she was was a transwoman, he killed her.

Andrade admits to police in an arrest affadavit obtained by KUSA-TV to killing Angie Zapata, who was found beaten to death in a Greeley apartment in the 2000 block of 4th Street on July 17. According to authorities Zapata had suffered fatal wounds to her head and face.

The affidavit says Andrade met Zapata on a social networking site, Mocospace, and the two arranged to meet July 15.

Zapata picked Andrade up in Thornton where he lived and the pair returned to Zapata's Greeley apartment together. Andrade told police Zapata performed a sexual act on him.

The following day, the affidavit explains, Andrade started to look at photos in the apartment and questioned Zapata's sex. That night, Andrade questioned Zapata directly, according to the affidavit, and Andrade says Zapata responded, "I'm all woman."

Andrade told police he grabbed Zapata in her genital area and felt a penis. He became angry and hit Zapata with his fist before grabbing a fire extinguisher and hitting her in the head twice, according to the affidavit.

Andrade explained to police that he thought he "killed it," referring to Zapata but when she made gurgling noises and started to sit up, he hit her with the extinguisher again.

He also admitted to police that he stole Zapata's car and drove away.

On the 17th, Zapata's sister, Monica Murguia, called police saying she had not heard from Zapata. She also went to her apartment where she found Zapata's body on the ground covered with a blanket.

Wednesday morning at around 1:45 a.m. Thornton Police responded to a noise complaint at Sierra Vista Apartment Homes in Thornton. There they contacted Andrade and linked him to the stolen car. He was arrested on outstanding warrants.

Andrade has a lengthy record that includes attempt to commit first-degree criminal trespass, attempt to commit theft from a person, possession of a contraband, attempted escape and attempt to commit theft by receiving. He served time for each of the convictions.

The Greeley Police Department is expected to hold a news conference at 2 PM MDT with additional information.

Can you smell the 'trans panic' defense Andrade's defense attorney will be cooking up?

  1. "killed it"!? I surely pray for the Zapata family and that this scum will get exactly what he deserves for such a henious and senseless act against another human being.

  2. It should have MANNED UP and fought. I mean, damn, he had a d!ck -- surely he had FISTS too. How crazy.

  3. i can certainly understand his anger at being deceived, but angry enough to actually take another person's life - that is a bit much. and the poor thing isn't even here to defend herself, because he may not even be telling the whole truth. the whole situation is unfortunate. i always feel so much love whenever i meet - whatever the acronym is- lol GLBT (gay, lesbian, transgender) people. i am just so sad at the fact whenever a human being doesn't feel comfortable being him or herself. :(

Angie Zapata did not deserve to die. Period. I hope the scumbag they arrested is convicted and sent to prison for a long time.

I only wish Zapata had not done so much to put herself in harm's way. I know, she was only 18, and the capacity to make sound judgments is still being formed during teen years, but it was so stupid of her to take some guy she didn't know back to her apartment and give him head.

Smokie -- I don't know how big Zapata was, but I know from experience that when you're struck when you're not expecting it, it's hard to get into fighting mode, especially when you're not a fighter by nature. She probably never had a chance.

Crys -- I'm a trans women several months into transition. Just so you know, I'm very comfortable being myself.

  5. crys, the only 'deception' here, is that he deceived himself into believing he had the right to sex. If she wasn't consenting for him to do anything downstairs, it's none of his business if anything is there.

Besides this murderous jackass being transphobic, it sounds like he's got some kind of rapist mentality, that once she's done something sexually that he essentially owns her.

  6. every LGBT blog i've seen carrying this story has some repugnant comments about what she did wrong. sadly, it didn't surprise me to see that on gay-oriented blogs, but on THIS one?

with allies like that, who needs enemies?

She. Not "it." You're talking about a person here, a transgendered woman murdered for daring to exist.

But that's some charming bloody victim blaming there.

  8. @smokie I would have told you about your response but queen emily beat me to it. She had a name and had a right to life and dignity the same as you. If you cannot appreciate that then you are no different than her murderer.

  9. Smokie,
Angie Zapata is not an 'it'.

And Smokie, just because you are a female with a penis, does not necessarily mean that the physical qualities transfer.

Once you as a M2F start taking female hormones, you lose about most of your former masculing strenght level because of the feminization and elongation of muscle tissue. I'm 6'2", but I do not have the strength level of a male my size or age isnce I've long since become an estrogen based lifeform.

She is a human being who didn't deserve to die and unfortunately, made some choices that led to her tragic death.

Online dating is dangerous enough, but not revealing your transgender status before engaging in sexual activity is a recipe for disaster.

  10. Monica, I have a great deal of respect for you and I know your intention is good, but honestly I'm a little shocked to feel like your own comment disappointingly smacks of victim-blaming.

I imagine that in many cases of someone being tragically murdered, we could look and find a precipitating tragic error. We'll probably never know if Angie was deliberately playing the dangerous game of stealth-to-the-nth-degree like Gwen, or if she simply met someone she liked and got swept up before she was ready to have a deep discussion about gender and the meaning of attraction that could have gotten her assaulted or even killed anyway. Because you know, passion tragically works that way sometimes. What does seem clear is that the guy is a sociopath, so who knows what REALLY happened, or what might have?

And I think it was YOU (though I could be wrong) who had pointed out that Gwen's murderers must have had some idea that she was trans before they sat around stewing over the notion that they were all inadvertently "gay."

These kinds of remarks about her mistakes are flooding EVERY blog and forum covering the story, and I think we're capable of educating each other about dating safety without implying that lost sisters somehow had a hand in their own murders.

  11. Sophia,
I'm not letting Allen Andrade off the hook. He deserves to fry.

Howewer, pointing out that online dating, especially for a transwoman is dangerous and can result in you getting hurt of killed is NOT 'blaming the victim', it's staing a fact.

I understand the desire of a young transwoman to want to test her ability to attract the opposite sex and get her freak on like any young woman

But just as out biosisters have to be cognizant of the fact that they could get raped it they aren't careful about the situations they put themselves in, young transwomen also need to start being cognizant of the fact that they need to take common sense precautions in order to avoid being added to the 'Remebering our Dead' list.

  12. How can this be 2nd degree murder -- why is there such a feeling among comments that this was not a catastrophic hate act but "kind of OK" I really don't understand.

    This young human was killed.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Meg-
It's 2nd degree because it was committed intentionally but without premeditation. Hate crime statutes might give him an extra decade or so, though.

  14. Meg,
Nobody, myself included, is saying this is OK. The outrage over Angie's killing and the way she's continued to be disrespected in some quarters of the media definitely underscores that.

  15. There's a lot of presumption here that he was telling the truth in his confession about the circumstances of their involvement.

Why is he "default" believable when he said he had no idea she was trans? What makes us give him the presumption of being truthful and deceived? The innate prejudice of those who buy that?

Lemme jus' run this by all of ya. OK?

All transwomen are deceptive. Angie Zapata was a transwoman. Angie Zapata was deceptive.

Instead, let's try this as a possibility only, shall we?

Allen Ray Andrade wanted some strange. For 24 hours Allen Ray Andrade got it and then felt guilty. Allen Ray Andrade murdered the object of his own lust because he felt he would be seen as being gay. Then he told the cops that she had deceived him, he had never known. Afterall, he ain't gay!

    How's that sound to y'all?

Now, why the heck is that not a possibility, from anyone whose commented so far? Is that simply to big a stretch to even imagine?

That man (yes, I know what I just did) might have very knowingly been with a transwoman. Wow, what a concept! Everyone knows that NO man is ever knowingly with a transwoman!!

Damn, Nichole, how can you be so naive?

We only have the word of a confessed murderer that she hadn't told him over the course of time they had known one another, including most of the last 36 hours of her life when they had been in each other's company including him psending the night in her apartment and then staying there the next day!!

Jeez, not even a remote possibility?

What makes his word gold? What makes her word, not given of course due to her death, dirt?

The death of the "panic" defense? Hardly, even othe transwomen believe she was deceptive. His lawyer will use it, and even if he allows a transsexual woman on the jury she'll not vote for murder after he presents his defense. Why, because Angie has already been tried in everyone's mind.

I mean even a rude and ignorant person like Smokie can come to a trans blog and make a tasteless comment. Whatssup here, Monica?

And yes, the whole thang just burns me.

  16. Same here Nichole,
I'm jyst tired of opening my e-mail and seeing another link to a story about a young transperson being killed.

  17. Can anyone tell me why this 32 year old GROWN MAN was with a 18 year old in the first place?

The sad reality, is that I hoped Zapata was 17, becuase then her killer would not be able to squirm away from a heavy prison sentence, and would not be able to hide behind transfobia as a defence.

As far as smokie's comment goes, that is the most stupid post I have ever read. I do not know what men you have dated girfriend, but the over 30 year olds I have been with have no trouble kicking the butts of 18 year olds. I do not care how much you "MAAAAAAN UP", most 18 year olds are not going to whip the behind of a 32 year old man. Much less one who is taking female hormones.

I swear some people never cease to amaze me!!!
