Don't Want Republicans Running The Government? You Need To Vote!

Image may contain: 2 people, meme and text
If you don't want Republicans running our government at any level, the ONLY way you can #FireTheGOP is vote in each and every election you get an opportunity to participate in.

If you live in Texas, the deadline to register and be eligible to vote on November 6, you need to be registered by October 9.

Early voting in Texas starts October 22.

Not only do you need to be registered to vote, if you are, double check your registration between now and Election Day.    Republican controlled areas are merrily engaging in voter roll purging and other voter suppression tactics so that they can restrict the numbers of people headed to the polls to vote their butts out of office.

Voting is not a waste of time,   If you believe that BS that voting is a waste of time, then why are the Republicans passing voter suppression laws?

If you want to change the jacked up fascist direction this country is going in, you must take the time to handle your patriotic duty as an American citizen and vote.

AG Holder's HRC 2018 National Dinner Speech

Image result for Eric Holder speaks at HRC dinner
Eric Holder was the attorney general during much of the Obama Administration from 2009-2015.  There are rumors that he is considering a run for POTUS in 2020.

I also have much love and respect for AG Holder, and hope he does decide to run. We'll find out if that happens withing the next few months.

The 2018 HRC National Dinner took place Saturday night in Washington DC, and AG Holder was on the stage speaking to the folks attending the dinner.

He also gave a shoutout to Shea Diamond's performance during that event.

Here's his speech.

You Want Some Ice Cream

This latest song rewrite was inspired by my homegirl Tarah Taylor.

She mentioned on her Facebook page that in the largely Latinx northside Houston neighborhood of Aldine, there is an ice cream truck rolling through the area that instead of playing nursery rhymes to get the kids and parents outside the house to part with their money for his delicious treats, it plays Jennifer Lopez songs.

Didn't take me long to come up with the remixed lyrics after that.

So y'all know what to do.  Find your fave music program and sing along with Moni's remixed lyric to this JLo song.

You Want Some Ice Cream
(sung to the tune of 'Ain't Your Mama' by Jennifer Lopez)

You've been cooking all day

MJ Rodriguez To Receive Trailblazer Hispanic Heritage Award

You know MJ Rodriguez as Blanca Rodriguez Evangelista from the hit FX show POSE that will kick off Season 2 in 2019.
MJ Rodriguez, the actress who plays Blanca, is poised to make history when the 31st annual Hispanic Heritage Awards take place in Washington DC at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

The 27 year old Rodriguez will be honored by the Hispanic Heritage Foundation with the Trailblazer Hispanic Heritage Award.

It is a prestigious one in the Latinx community that has previously gone to Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Gloria Estefan, Rita Moreno, Celia Cruz, America Ferrera, Gael Garcia Bernal, Zoe Saldana, Ricky Martin and Placido Domino just to name some of the recipients of that award.

Congratulations to MJ as her name joins that distinguished list of honorees.

Rodriguez is being recognized for her “talent, courage and social impact,” according to Jose Antonio Tijerino, President and CEO of the Hispanic Heritage Foundation. “Her story is a journey of triumph as she leads the way for transgender representation in Hollywood and beyond,” he said in a statement.

Rodriguez will become the first trans feminine woman ever to win this award, and the Hispanic Heritage Awards can be seen on PBS later this month.

Texas Conservafools Snatching Beto Yard Signs

Image result for Beto yard signs
When Rep. Beto O'Rourke (D-El Paso) announced his candidacy for the US senate,  the Texas Republican Party sneered and laughed about it

Sen. John Cornyn (R) arrogantly said back on May 4, "Beto is going to give him a run, but I don't think he has a chance."

Image result for Beto on Colbert
Fast forward to us being less than 30 days from the October 22 start of early voting in the Lone Star State.   Beto has visited all 254 counties in Texas.   He is depending on the polls, within two to four  percentage points of Rafael, building momentum towards Election Day, and making appearances on Ellen, the Stephen Colbert Show and more frequent appearances on national news shows.

Cornyn has changed his tune from a dismissive smirk to outright sounding the alarm that Cruz is in trouble.

Image result for Beto O'Rourke
"We're not bluffing, this is real, and it is a serious threat," Cornyn said in a POLITICO interview. "If Ted does his job and we do ours, I think we'll be fine. But if we have donors sitting on the sidelines thinking that, 'Well, this isn't all that serious,' or 'I don't need to be concerned,' then that's a problem."

Even Ted Cruz has stopped ignoring Beto and started attacking him, even going as far as releasing a doctored video to bolster his weak attack line claiming Beto is 'too liberal for Texas'

Nope Ted.   We finally got someone better than you that we like and has a serious chance of making you a one term US senator.

Dolt 45 is rumored to be traveling to Texas soon to hold a rally at Jerry World for our not so Texas tough senator from Alberta.

The worried Texas conservafool minions have started doing their grassroots level dirty trick of sign stealing.  This thug woman was busted in Houston's ritzy River Oaks neighborhood stealing this Beto sign.  Reports are coming from other Houston neighborhoods and across the state that the same thing is happening.

Houston and Harris County make up 25% of the statewide vote totals in an election, and Harris County went blue in the 2016 election cycle.

FYI to the conservaBecky that stole this sign.  This is what that house looks like now.  The more signs you steal, the more money that goes to the Beto campaign ($10 a sign) to replace them.

A reminder and a warning to you Texas conservafools tempted to steal or destroy Beto signs.  Under Texas law, stealing, willfully defacing, destroying or removing a political sign on private property is a misdemeanor crime punishable by a $2500 fine and up to a year in jail

The Lone Star conservafools in addition to the national GOP are running scared over the prospect of a Senator Beto O'Rourke.   Good. The Democrats, despite having to defend 26 senate seats in this cycle, only need to flip two Republican held seats out of the eight the Republicans are having defend this cycle to get control of the US Senate

Beto's senate campaign is also forcing the Republican Senate Campaign Committee (RSCC) to make some tough calls in addition to ramping up their rhetoric.

They will have to decide soon if they wish to spend precious campaign funds in this expensive Texas media market trying to save Ted or commit that money to Republican senate candidates in more affordable markets elsewhere in the country
Meanwhile Lyin' Ted Cruz is in the fight of his political life in this US senate race.  It's past time we had a Democrat once again positively repping the senate seat once held by Ralph Yarborough and Lloyd Bentsen.

Trans, Muslim and Living In Malaysia

Image result for Transgender Muslim and living In Malaysia
If you're trans, Muslim  and live in Malaysia, it means that you are not only dealing with the anti-trans hatred aimed at you, you also have to contend with the religious police messing with you as well.

You also have to contend with religious authorities trying to forcibly detransition you back to living in a gender role you are not comfortable in

This situation our trans Muslim fam face in Malaysia is probably the wet dream of our Talabaptist right wing fundies to replicate the religious persecution of trans Americans here.

Here is a documentary discussing the fight for trans Malaysian Muslims to not only have their human rights they deserve, but just have the ability to happily live their lives.

TransGriot 2018 NFL Picks- Week 2

Image result for texans vs new england 2018
Week 1 of the NFL season can be a crapshoot in terms of NFL prognostication.    While you have some idea of how they might play because of the previous season's body of work, that was still a year ago.

Teams have changed because players have moved to new teams either via trade or free agency.  Others have been cut and are still looking to be signed, have retired,  are on suspension for various reasons, on IR  or are out because of training camp or preseason game injuries.

There there are also the drafted rookies who did make the team, and fans are eagerly watching to see what impact they make on their 2018 squad.

While I had a great week to start the 2018 NFL prognostication contest , my fave NFL team didn't.  They started slow and fell behind the New England Cheatriots Patriots 21-6  before waking up in the second half to lose 27-20 amd fall to 0-7 in Foxborough.

Sooner or later they will beat New England up there, and I'd much rather have it happen during the playoffs.

I also found it interesting at all seven of the new coaches making their season debuts lost their Week 1 games.   Like all the 0-1 teams (or 0-0-1 in Pittsburgh and Cleveland's cases) they are going to have some work to do to ensure they don't go into an 0-2 hole.

So let's get to the Week 2 picks.   Mike's will be at this link.   Mine will be in bold print with the home team in CAPS.

Good Luck Melissa!

The New York primary election is happening today, and my friend Melissa Sklarz is trying to make more history in the Empire State by becoming the first out trans person elected to the New York State Assembly

She's running for the 30th Assembly District;s Democratic party nomination against freshman incumbent Assemblyman Brian Barnwell, who knocked off a longtime incumbent himself in 2016.

Here's hoping that when the polls close in New York state, we hear some good news this evening.

Good luck, Melissa!

TransGriot Update:  Unfortunately it didn't work out for Melissa last night.   Assemblyman Barnwell captured the Democratic nomination for the 30th Assembly District seat

Moni's Thoughts On The Friess Op-Ed

Image result for steve friess
Looks like some rainbow vanillacentric privileged nerves got plucked in the aftermath of the incident during the closing NLGJA reception in which Marshall McPeek was called out for a problematic 'things and its' comment while emceeing the event.

Mary Emily O'Hara wrote an article about the incident, I followed it up with my thoughts about it, and now Steve Friess has written a shady op-ed in the Bay Area Reporter in which he asserted that 'everybody was wrong' , but focused much of his commentary on attacking the trans community and what he derisively called 'Pitchfork-wielding Trans Twitter'.

Gee, how mighty white gay male of him.

Here was my response I posted in the comment thread to his op-ed.

Steve Friess,
Referring to human beings as 'things and its' is not a joke to the trans community, and especially the African American one who are taking the brunt of the anti-trans violence aimed at us.
It is never wrong to immediately call crap out. And FYI, you don't get to tell trans people what we should and shouldn't be offended by or how offended we should be about anti-trans insults.
I can forgive mistakes. But as a representative of the group taking the brunt of that anti-trans hate violence that starts with comments like that, I am also compelled to immediately call that comment out, because far too often, gay men like yourself have been slinging those anti-trans insults inside community circles and LGBTQ organizations with zero accountability.
If you have a problem with this NLGJA member calling that problematic comment out at a reception sponsored by a so called 'news' organization that makes their money demonizing Black and trans people on a regular basis, too bad.
One of the jobs of the media and LGBTQ journalists is to speak truth to power, even within our own circles and organizations, not sweep crap under the rug.

I repeat, it is never wrong to instantly call out problematic commentary.  And as TBLGQ journalists, it is not our job to be stenographers for our community organizations.  When they do something that is worthy of praise we will give them their kudos, and when they frakk up, we will call them on it.

As an African American TBLGQ journalist, I am part of that century plus long tradition Black journalists have of not only speaking truth to power, but activist journalism that moves the ball forward in our ongoing human rights struggle.

The fact that am transgender, I do so as an NLGJA member from a GLAAD award winning decade plus old blog, a monthly column in a regional LGBTQ magazine and have 15K followers on Twitter doesn't diminish the power of my written words or the importance of them, it enhances them.

And you would be wise to listen to what the hell I have to say as an unapologetic Black trans someone who also has 20 years of award winning activist experience.

As journalist Ida B. Wells once said, "The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them."

That is what has been taking place here.   When we point out stuff that is wrong in our community, in our organizations, or discuss problematic commentary, we are doing so in the spirit of constructive criticism so that the mistake can be corrected.    We are doing so to make organizations better.

The bottom line is that comment should have never been uttered in an organization dedicated to respectful coverage of the TBLGQ community.   And if people who are part of our community's media organization think it's okay to call trans people 'things and its', what hope do we trans folks have of getting respectful coverage from mainstream media, much less have NLGJA stand up for us when the inevitable misgendering or facts free anti-trans reporting happens?

We trans journalists are representing our community and our readership, and they demand of us that when necessary, we hold you accountable.

We also need you as organizations representing the TBLGQ community to role model the change we wish to see in this currently screwed up Trump run country.

Number 20- Rest In Power and Peace Londonn Moore Kinard

Image may contain: 2 people, closeup
While we're still waiting for confirmation on two possible murders in New York, we have a confirmed one in North Port, FL

20 year old Londonn Moore Kinard was found face down shot to death at the intersection of Sawyer Circle and Red Oak Road at 7:30 AM EDT Saturday.

Lauren Coffey
And as you probably guessed, Londonn was egregiously misgendered in death by reporter Lauren Coffey, who went out of his way to misgender our fallen sister.

I'll call out this F+ transphobic 'reporting' and this stenographer later.  In the meantime my priority is getting justice for Londonn and all who loved her.

Step aside, sir and watch how we properly cover a trans murder victim.

Back to business.

Image result for north port fl police
North Port PD is still investigating this case and are being tight lipped about many of the details in this case.   They are asking if you do have evidence that will lead to the arrest, prosecution and conviction of the killer, you are asked to call Detective Chris Maki at 941-429-7323

Londonn is now the 20th person we have lost in the US in 2018 to anti trans violence.   She is the 15th African American trans person we have lost this year, and the tenth person under age 30 we have lost.

And we're still trying to confirm if two more found dead last week were homicides.

Yeah, this pattern is getting beyond aggravating.  My young trans siblings die, and get disrespected still further in death. The crap has got to stop.   #StopKillingUs   #BlackTransLivesMatter

Sharif Durhams Elected NLGJA President

Sharif Durhams headshot
Lost in all the drama that took place on  Saturday night is the historic and groundbreaking news that NLGJA has elected its first Black president

He is Sharif Durhams, who is the senior editor for news and alerting at CNN Digital.  His two year term at the helm of NLGJA started September 9.   Durhams has been a lifetime member of NLGJA since 2000, has co-chaired a previous NLGJA convention, and has served for several years on the organization's board of directors.

The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), of which Durhams is also a lifetime member, hailed his election

"NABJ is proud of members Sharif Durhams and Cheryl W. Thompson for their recent elections as presidents of NLGJA and IRE respectively," NABJ President Sarah Glover said. "As the country's demographics continue to become increasingly more diverse, it's noteworthy that NABJ members are stepping forward to take on organizational leadership roles that shape media discourse and the future of journalism."
"My goal is to improve the diversity of this organization as well as it's outreach," said Durhams, who also has a lifetime memberships in the NABJ. "I definitely want both organizations to work more together. In some ways, our issues mirror each other, such as making sure there is support in our newsrooms for diversity and getting people from diverse backgrounds into leadership positions.

"There are ways we can back each other up to make sure all of our voices are heard."

Image result for NLGJA 2018 New Orleans
One of Durham's goals is to not only build on the efforts of outgoing president Jen Christensen build diversity within NLGJA, he also seeks to grow the 28 year old organization's membership ranks and its financial coffers to ensure stability and its long term staying power.

Durhams also wants NLGJA to become a more vocal thought leader in the journalism world in addition to train newsrooms in how to better cover transgender people and LGBTQ communities of color.

And I'm looking forward to working with him over the next two years to make that happen.

Congratulations on your new position in the NLGJA ranks, Sharif!   Congratulations on also making history!    .

Moni's Thoughts About The 2018 NLGJA Convention Closing Reception

Image result for nlgja palm springs
As you TransGriot readers are aware of, I've spent the last several days at the just recently concluded 2018 NLGJA Convention in Palm Springs as part of the LGBT Media Journalists Convening that was embedded in it.

This was also my first time at the NLGJA Convention.  While I always enjoy my down time with my LGBT Media Journalists fam, getting to know them on a more personal and professional level, and the mutually beneficial networking that happens while there, the reality is that the LGBT Media Convening space I've been interacting with over the last six years has been far more diverse than the NLGJA convention itself.

That's not just an NLGJA problem, it's a problem consistent across many LGBTQ community convention spaces because of the fiscal barriers that lock many POC and trans people out.

As someone who was a panelist during the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) convention in Boston in 2014 and attended the Unity NABJ-NAHJ one in DC in 2016 as part of their efforts to reach out to trans people and learn how to respectfully cover us, the contrast between those media conferences and the NLGJA overwhelmingly white cis gay male one is jarring.

Image may contain: mountain, sky, outdoor and nature
The microaggressive and macroaggressive reminders it wasn't going to be like those NABJ-NAHJ events started when I opened the convention program book in my Hotel Zosa third floor room to encounter my first Maya Wilkes moment.   Several pages into it was a full page ad from FOX News along with a FOX News branded item in the swag bag.

FOX Noise since its founding has been anti-Black, racist and hostile to people who look like me.  It has been ramping up since 2014 the on-air hostility to trans, nonbinary and GNC people.

What person or persons within NLGJA thought this was a wonderful idea to have them as a corporate sponsor?  Did they not consider the optics of that sponsorship, much less how the Black trans, bi and SGL journalists you're trying to attract to this conference would see this?

FOX Noise doesn't like Black people, the feeling is mutual, and when I'm looking for credible news sources, they definitely aren't it

Image result for FOX News hostile to Black people
So imagine my shock and awe level surprise when I hear and have visual evidence of a network hostile to my existence on multiple levels being a 'proud sponsor' of this NLGJA convention.

That was deeply troubling, but I was already here in Palm Springs and needed to focus on what I needed to do to be ready for the plenary I was participating in on Friday.

Image may contain: 4 people
Guess I did alright, since I kept hearing congratulatory commentary about it from other attendees from 3 PM PDT until I left yesterday morning for the Palm Springs airport.

But Friday inexorably moves to Saturday and the conference's closing reception which was also sponsored by FOX News.  I almost skipped it to hang out with a trans sister who lives there, but decided I needed to be in that room.

So while I'm helping myself to some of the food at this reception the program starts and one of the emcees, later identified as Marshall McPeek  makes the 'things and its' comment that has been reported in Mary Emily O'Hara's story that I immediately called out and will repeat again.

While I am happy McPeek came back later and apologized and NLGJA an organization I've been a member of for several years has released a statement about it, the damage was still done.

No Mr. McPeek and by extension, NLGJA and FOX News, there were no 'things and its' in that Hotel Zoso room that September 8 night.   There were trans, gender non-conforming (GNC) and non-binary (NB) people in there    There were your trans, GNC and NB media colleagues in that room.

Most importantly, there were your trans, NB and GNC identified journalism students in that audience who are aspiring to and working diligently towards getting to the level when you are.

How do you think that 'things and its' comment, which has been derisively and sometimes violently spat at the trans community by all transphobic comers over the last few years made us feel?

How do you think it made me personally feel as the lone representative at NLGJA 2018 of the demographic group who is taking the brunt of the anti-trans violence in this country?

And to underscore that last point, I was made aware of the latest trans feminine murder victim of 2018 as I was in transit to attend the NLGJA conference and waiting for my connecting flight from Phoenix to Palm Springs

Image result for nlgja palm springs
Far too often, that derogatory 'things and its' comment has been hurled at us by gay men and our detractors.   It definitely shouldn't have happened during a journalism organization convention dedicated to ensuring accurate and respectful coverage of the TBLGQ community, and problematically hosted by a 'news' organization that routinely demonizes trans, NB and GNC people.

Image result for Eden Lane CNN
Trans, NB and GNC peeps are not 'things or its', and that is an unacceptable thing to say at any time, even inside the TBLGQ+ community..  It is also unacceptable to say during a time when the trans, NB, and GNC community is under legislative assault and their humanity is under attack by the Republican Party, trans eexterminationalist radical 'feminists' and the conservative movement .

The lack of diversity in media is not just an NLGJA problem.   It's a problem that needs to be fixed across the American media landscape, not just in LGBTQ media circles.

The lack of trans journalists in the overwhelmingly white male dominated newsrooms of the country also needs to be addressed

LGBTQ media can lead the way in demonstrating what a diverse and inclusive newsroom looks like and pointing out that diversity is good for your news outlet's bottom line.

Trans folks are 1-3% of the US population, and we read and watch the news, too.

Image result for danica roem
As demonstrated by my 2016 Netroots Nation Pundit Cup title and later getting the opportunity to do political punditry on my hometown ABC13 station during Election Night 2016, and others doing so on various national shows here and around the world, trans journalists can discuss more than just trans issues.

One of us even got elected to the Virginia House of Delegates last year.
.
But we need to get more opportunities to demonstrate that ability, and more importantly, get paid a regular check for doing so.

NLGJA has been handed a moment in which it can be a leader in addressing and helping to solve the dearth of trans journalists problem.

Image result for NLGJA 2018 New Orleans
The question is will they seize that opportunity?  Will we see progress in increasing the abysmal numbers of trans, NB and GNC journalists before we gather again a year from now in New Orleans?

That remains to be seen.

Barack Obama- Democracy Under Threat Speech

TransGriot 2018 NFL Picks -Week 1

Image result for nfl new year's eve schedule
I have had eight months to think about how I screwed up my chance to be the three time TransGriot NFL prognostication champion and how I would have been working on a fourpeat if not for missing the posting deadline for TWO Thursday night games and going 7-9 in the last week of the season.

Instead, I lost my threepeat by one game

Image result for Jerry Jones hat during national anthem
I was also thinking about NOT participating this year in protest of all the NFL owner shadiness towards the players and their continued collusion efforts aimed at Colin Kaepernick and now Eric Reed.

Image result for nfl player protest 2018 preseason
But while doing the hard solid thinking in the offseason about not participating this year, I also remembered that 70% of the NFL's players are African American.  I also remembered how sick I am of them being racistly attacked by Trump and his ignorant MAGA hat wearing minions and blamed for the drop in NFL ratings.

I am also tired of many of the NFL at the behest of Jones owners co signing that BS and the NFL leadership being mealy mouthed about it  .  .

So let's do this, Mr Watts.   Besides, I want my title back.

For those of you who aren't familiar with how the TransGriot NFL Prognostication contest works, Mike and I pick the winners of that week's regular season NFL games with no spread.

Picks for the week must be posted no later than 10 minutes before kickoff of the Thursday night game (or Saturday Sunday games in December and January).  Any game not picked or erroneously left off is considered a loss.    NFL games that end tied will be recorded as a tie.

Person with the best record at the end of the season is crowned the TransGriot NFL prognostication Champion   My picks for the week will be in bold print, with the home team in CAPS.

Mike's picks will be at this link.

So let's get this 2018 contest started.  Everybody's playing, no bye weeks yet.

You TransGriot readers know I love Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) and hope she at least thinks about running for POTUS in 2020.

In the interim, while we wait to see if she does that down the line, she along with Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) are on the Senate Judiciary Committee and handling their senate business barbecuing Brett Kavanaugh's behind.

Check out this eight minute exchange between her and Kavanaugh, who seems to be having selective memory loss in real time

It has been another rough year for Black trans women in terms of once again being the ones most likely to be killed due to anti-trans violence.

I was traveling, and was distressed to hear while waiting for my connecting flight in Phoenix this morning that we added another name to the already too long list of trans people who have been killed in 2018.  We go to Philadelphia. PA  for the nineteenth person we have lost in the person of Shantee Tucker.

According to reporting from Philadelphia magazine, the 30 year old Tucker was found at 1:05 AM EDT by police officers responding to reports of a shooting at 4300 Old York Road.

Upon arrival they found Tucker lying in the highway suffering from a gunshot would to the back.
She was taken to Temple University Hospital where she succumbed from her injuries.

The initial police investigation revealed that Tucker had a brief argument with a person or persons in a black older model Ford pickup truck.   Gunshots were subsequently fired at Tucker after the verbal confrontation.   That black Ford truck had bonding on it and no tailgate, and the Philadelphia police are looking for the people in that truck.

If you have any information concerning this latest murder, you are urged to call the Philadelphia Police Homicide Unit at 215- 686-3334   or 215-686-TIPS (8477)

Tucker unfortunately is now the 14th African American trans and gender nonconforming person killed due to anti-trans violence in the US in 2018 and the thirteenth Black trans feminine person.

What is even more distressing to me is that this is the third Black trans person we have lost in a week and as I write this, I'm hearing unconfirmed reports that we may have another one in New York..

What is also upsetting to me is that Shantee just recently celebrated her 30th birthday on September 2.

Her Black life mattered.   Her Black trans life mattered.  When are our Black legacy orgs going to stand up and speak out publicly about the slaughter of Black trans women and call for its end?

Still waiting for that public statement from you, NAACP.

As of yet, no word about any vigils planned for Shantee, and if I hear any news about them or I'm notified about it in time, I'll pass that info along.

Rest in power and peace, Shantee.  Your family and all who loved you will not rest until the wastes of DNA who committed this crime are caught, prosecuted and rotting in a jail cell.

I'm In A Hotel In California!

The Hotel Zoso in Palm Springs to be precise.

After my early AM flights from IAH through Phoenix, I'm finally here and ensconced in my room getting ready for the first day of the 2018 LGBT Media Journalists Convening and the 2018 NLGJA convention.

But I'm doing so with a heavy heart.   While I was in Phoenix waiting to board my maintenance delayed flight to Palm Springs, I received word that we'd lost another young Black trans woman to anti-trans violence in Philadelphia    Rest in power and peace, Shantee Tucker.

While this is the first time I've stayed overnight in Palm Springs, I've been through here a few time back in 1988 and 1992 for gas stops.   The 1998 trip was one in which I was helping one of my mom's sorors move back to Texas.   The 1992 one was one in which I was helping my cousin move to LA.

So yes, Palm Springs has changed a lot since my last time in the area.  Probably won't get much time to explore it, but looking forward to spending some quality time with all my friends and colleagues in the NLGJA and during #LGBTMedia18

2018 Williams Watch- Serena To The US Open Sems!

Serena Williams
17th seeded (what a travesty) Serena Williams is still on track in her quest to win her record seventh US Open singles title and her 24th career Grand Slam.

When I last checked in on my fave tennis playing siblings latest trip to the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, they were about to play each other for the 30th time in the US Open third round.

It was not a great day for Venus at Ashe Stadium as Serena was at A++ level tennis that entire match.  She cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 straight set victory over her older sister to punch her ticket to a fourth round matchup with Estonia's Kaia Kanepi.

Kanepi had taken out world number one (for now) and tournament number one seed Simona Halep and up until this point was having a wonderful tournament.   However, Kanepi had not only never beaten Serena, she'd never won a set against her.

Early in that fourth round match it looked like it was going to play out the same way as Serena was continuing her A++ level of play from her demolition of Big Sis and won the first set in a lightning quick 18 minutes.

But after dropping a second set service game, Serena came off that A++ tennis game and Kanepi raised her level of play to take the second set and surprisingly even the match to the chagrin of Serena fans in Arthur Ashe Stadium, me and everywhere else on the planet

Serena cranked it up to A+ level in the third set and sent Kanepi packing after a three set 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 win to move on to a quarterfinal matchup with the eighth seeded Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic.

Pliskova was having a nice tournament run herself, and had Serena down 4-2 in the first set.  But Little Sis dug deep, raised that level of play and came back to win that first set and eventually the match in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to make it to herr ninth consecutive US Open semifinal.

Sloane Stephens US Open 2018
She will face in that semifinal nineteenth seeded Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova.   She took down seventh seeded Elina Svitolina in three sets 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 and third seeded defending champ Sloane Stephens in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 to make it to the semis and face Williams, who is the lone remaining Grand Slam champion in this 2018 women's US Open field.

A Grand Slam champion that wants to add another US Open title to her list and win her first Slam since giving birth to her daughter Olympia a year ago.

Heaven help you if Serena starts playing that A++ level we saw against Venus and the first set of the Kanepi match.
