UH Coogs Take On San Diego State In The Las Vegas Bowl

Image result for Las Vegas Bowl 2016
It's not the New Year's Six Bowl or the College Football Playoff game that we Cougar fans were hoping to get to at the beginning of this season, but it's another bowl game trip for the 9-3 UH Cougars,

This is the 25th anniversary edition of the Las Vegas Bowl, and the game will feature two explosive offenses and stout defenses in the Cougars and the 10-3 San Diego State Aztecs,

The #HTownTakeover will face the Mountain West Conference champs and their all everything back Donnell Pumphrey, who could break Ron Dayne's FBS all purpose yards record.

Image result for uh ed oliver
But he'll have to do against a Cougar defense that features our all everything freshman nose tackle Ed Oliver, who wreaked havoc on AAC offensive lines along with Oklahoma's and Louisville's , had 19 tackles for loss and is probably going to be a handful for a San Diego State team that hasn't seen or played against anyone like him in the Mountain West.

On the offensive side, I get to watch our all everything quarterback Greg Ward, Jr in his final game as the Cougar signal caller.

This will also be the first game as head coach of Major Applewhite, our offensive coordinator who was elevated to the top job after Tom Herman left to go to UT.

I'll be parked in front of the TV watching it starting at 2:30 PM CST

January 2017 National Geographic Cover Makes Trans History

Image may contain: 1 person, text
One of the cool things about being trans is that we can and are making history at times.

This latest bit of trans history involves the iconic international magazine National Geographic.

Image may contain: 1 person, standing
When the January 2017 issue of National Geographic comes out, it will have an article in it entitled 'The Gender Revolution' that has a picture of trans teen Trinity Neal in it.

National Geographic is also airing a documentary on February 6 entitled 'Gender Revolution, A Journey With Katie Couric.'

Gender Revolution DVD

Couric will in the documentary be interviewing parents of trans kids, people undergoing gender confirmation surgery and intersex individuals.

"It's hard to avoid hearing about some aspect of gender these days. Every time you check your phone, turn on the TV or scan Twitter, there's another story that's challenging our preconceived notions of what gender is, how it's determined and the impact these new definitions are having on society," Couric said in a statement. "I set out on a journey to try to educate myself about a topic that young people are living with so effortlessly—and get to know the real people behind the headlines. Because the first step to inclusiveness and tolerance is understanding."

One of the covers for this National Geographic gender issue will be 7 year old Avery Jackson, who will become the first out trans person in the nearly 130 year history of the magazine to grace its cover.
cv-0117_newsstand
“National Geographic is almost 130 years old, and we have been covering cultures, societies and social issues for all of those years. It struck us, listening to the national conversation, that gender was at the center of so many of these issues in the news,” Susan Goldberg, editorial director of National Geographic Partners and editor-in-chief of National Geographic magazine, told NBC Out.

Goldberg emphasises that while throughout the year there was a lot of emphasis on celebrities, she wanted this issue to focus on the lives of the common man.

There is an alternate cover with a group of seven people on it

Congrats to Avery for making that amazing history and proving once again that trans people are part of the diverse mosaic of human life, and everyone who was interviewed either for the magazine article or the documentary.

Shut Up Fool Awards- 9 Days Until Christmas Edition

Image result for 9 days until christmas images
We are getting inexorably closer to Christmas Day, and it's shaping up to be a bittersweet holiday season for a lot of us who didn't want that oompa loompa in the White House.

I'll have time to talk about that later, but in the interim, going to try to at least enjoy the 2016 holiday season with the people that I love and care about inside and outside the community.

Looking forward to attending an upcoming holiday party with my high school classmates on Sunday

It's friday, so it's time to get to the usual business of calling out and shining a bright spotlight on the fools in our midst that seem to have multiplied since November 8.

Let's get to this week's edition of the Shut Up Fool Awards.

This week's runaway winner is Milo Yiannopoulos

He's definitely on Santa's naughty list and probably correct that he's approaching honorary TERF status.   Hey, many of them probably wish they could be white males like him, but don't have the courage to transition.

Milo once continued his pattern of transphobic attacks on the trans community he started at the University of Delaware.   He took to the podium at the University pf Wisconsin- Milwaukee on December 13and used that platform to spread anti-trans hatred that would make Dan Patrick and Ken Paxton proud, then doubled down on the transphobic attacks he unleashed on that UMW trans student student two days later at Minnesota State .

Hey collegiate student centers, how about doing the world a favor and not using our tax dollars to subsidize transphobic hatred?

Milo continues to be a shining example of the gay white male who gleefully acts as an oppressor to all, with a special emphasis on hating the trans community.

Milo Yiannopolous, shut up fool

Whose Fault Is It Trump Got Elected?

Antonia Elle D'orsay's Profile Photo, Image may contain: 1 person, closeup
I've always loved Toni D'orsay's no punches pulled commentary on just about any subject, and miss her Dyssonance blog.

Well, she's baaack.  This is a post from her Facebook page that needs to be signal boosted concerning her take on the 2016 election.

***

So ya'll know that the Turdblossom's supporters are bad at being people.
However, it isn't their fault that he was elected.
It is the fault of the Green Party, and The Democratic Party, and the people who didn't vote because they thought it was a done deal or out of protest about how bad the choices were.
They are the ones at fault. Like me. Although I did vote.
They hold the blame because, for one, these groups tend to not give a fuck about congressional races, and never really do much about local races outside of mayor, maybe governor once in a blue moon in a blue state.
You see, those people - and especially the ones that chose not to vote - are responsible for this.
This being an election where where two and a half people get to dictate the rules for the other ten.
Torn over which little step at a fucking time to take, ignoring the basic need to control the Congress and Legislatures as a matter of simple fact, the idea that one party is just as bad as the other (oh, and fuck you for thinking that, by the way, painfully and with lasting discomfort), the bullshit that says well, now we have to work with the overwhelmingly shitty folks on the other side because (reality check) we didn't elect enough or even run in many cases someone on our side.
That means you. This mess is your fault. This mess is my fault, even though I have been saying this for years because (reality check) this is how the folks on the other side did it.
Think on this, real quick:
What would Obama have accomplished had he not had to deal with six years of racist fucks?
An equal rights Amendment could be passed easily in dem controlled legislatures and a congress. A real tax plan that shuts down the fuckers about to rape our nation and make for a better country. Even a basic income for everyone and free collegiate education.
You fucked that up. Not them -- they did what they wanted to do. And there aren't as many of them.
It would be easy to do, but will take a decade now. Starting with two simple steps:
First, you start attending your local precinct meetings for the Dems. Every single month, like clockwork.
Bonus in that if you are single: cheap, interesting way to meet people. It's like Church, without God looking over your shoulder.
Second, you work your ass off to make sure that in 2018 that a majority or parity of Dems (yes, Dems, not greens, not libertarians, not whatever the fuck else) get into office in the Legislatures and in Congress in 2018.
If you have bitched about redistricting, keep in mind, that the 2018 and 2020 elections are the ones that will determine it. Just as the 2008 elections were.
This is so fucking important: there is no real leader right now in the Dems. Not Bernie, not Hillary, not Rahm, not Warren, none of them.
Not a single fuckin one of them.
New people. People of color and women and LGBT people and disabled folks and, well, you damn well better get the idea that white people and men are not the best choice here.
Fucking draft them if you have to. Except me. I would rather be chief of staff or something. Bad teeth.
Find them. Elect them. Make them understand that now we are going for the whole enchilada, the big fucking dream, and punch it.
Single payer. Minimum income. Free college. Minimum and Maximum wage. Yes, higher taxes. Sorry, don't be a fucking shitlord, taxes, and no damned deductions for incomes in the top 40%. Ironclad national rights and the power to prosecute.
You want that? In your lifetimes? Then you better fucking fight for it now.
Put your money where your mouth is. Don't like higher taxes but like the rest? Deal. That is how you kill classism really fucking fast. Don't like trans rights? Deal: that is how you get out of those student loans,
Want to save the environment, combat climate changes worst effects ( um, in case you didn't realize, this election just tipped the scales so far it is over )? This is how.
This really is the only way, as well. Because we have tried it the rest of the way.
Get voters out. To do that, promise them what they want.
And remember that the single largest population curve in US history is hitting voting age.
This is what they care about.
Trust me, white folks in flyover country will like it because it gives them what they want: money in pocket.
They will be politically correct once this 4 years is up.
And then we can do shit like fine folks who run for office and lie.
There is no other real way that doesn't involve giving those who hate the rest of us what they want.
Oh, and, yeah, I will run if I get my teeth fixed. F**k yeah.

Welcome To The International Trans Fam, Gauri!

"I want to tell the world it's not always easy to be who you are, but you must stay true to yourself'
-Gauri Arora

As I like to continue to remind you TransGriot readers, trans people are part of the diverse mosaic of human life and we inhabit every continent on this planet except Antarctica.

And wouldn't be surprised if one day, we hear about a trans scientist doing some research at the bottom of the world.

During a web surfing session to find some interesting things to talk about, discovered the chatter coming from India about our trans sister Gauri Arora that started back in late September .

Before her transition, the 24 year old had come out as bisexual on Indian national television, was a six foot tall model with a Men's Health magazine cover shoot to her credit with 8 pack abs, and had appeared on Season 8 of the reality television show MTV Splitsvilla.

Now the chatter in India is about Arora's metamorphosis to the person she knew she always was and how she is adapting to her new life.

She talked about her transition in this October interview with the Hindustan Times.

“I have the guts to come out while many don’t. I know that fame and money, I can make anytime as I’m ambitious and capable. This is me, this is my journey and my journey is all about Gauri Arora, who is moving from being the cover model of Men’s Health with eight-pack abs to the new me. Now I want to be on the cover of a women’s magazine. I have gym mates like Jacqueline Fernandes and Sonam Kapoor and they appreciate me like anything. I have a lot of fans and everywhere I go people come up and talk to me. But no one does anything to directly help. I feel there are many people with me but no one with me really. I can’t tell people please accept me, please love me. They take me as a glam thing. But deep down, I’m a girl, and I want a man in my life. And when I’m a woman, I want to adopt a girl child.”

We feel you, Gauri.   many of us have been there with the family rejection.  They may or may not come around, but you are not alone. You are part of an international family now, and we welcome you with open arms to it.

TransGriot 2016 NFL Picks - Week 15

Image result for Texans beat Colts 2016 22-17
Getting closer to the end of the 2016 regular season and it was a great week for me.

The Texans beat the Indianapolis Colts.  The Cowboys lost to the Giants again and even better, I won Week 14 in the season long prognostication contest between myself and Mike Watts to pad my lead with just three weeks left in the regular season..

I'm just three weeks from becoming the first ever repeat champion in this TransGriot prognostication contest

That 22-17 Texans win over the Colts not only snapped a three game losing streak, it kept them unbeaten in AFC South play and in first place in the division.   It was also the first ever season sweep of the Colts in Texans franchise history and the second consecutive win in Indy over their division rivals.

But enough jibber jabber.   Time to handle my NFL prognostication business.

We have 16 more games, including a Saturday NFL title.    Teams I'm picking to win will be in bold prints with home team in CAPS.  Mike's picks can be viewed here..

Thanks To Koncept Kit For My Blogiversary Gift

When January 1 rolls around TransGriot will start its second decade of operation telling it like it T-I-S is in terms of being an unapologetic truth teller in our community and talking about trans issues from a POC trans perspective.

During this tenth anniversary year fro TransGriot people asked me if I wanted to celebrate it with a party or other events.   One of the best things you can do is keep dropping change on that TransGriot  Tip Jar or consider sponsoring it.   I plow much of what I receive back into the the operation of the blog.

One of the things I've wanted and needed to do for a while is not only get TransGriot its own domain name, but also get a logo for it.   Thanks to Houston based Koncept Kit, I accomplished both those tasks.

Economic empowerment of our trans community ranks is important to me as well, and Koncept Kit being a person of color and trans owned firm also appealed to me as well.

It also gave me an opportunity to lead by example and spend my precious T-bills in our community.

So who is Koncept Kit?

Koncept Kit is a Houston media firm that does audio and visual work, photography, videography, web design and logo branding.

Koncept Kit did the artwork for Dr Colt Keo- Meier's trans themed children's book Stacey Is Not A Girl, and the photography and videography for the recent Gender Infinity Conference just to name some of the work they have done here locally.

After being impressed with their professionalism, how they handled that job and observing them do work at other community events,  I tapped Koncept Kit to come up with a logo for my blog.

The game plan is to unveil it by the time my January 1 blogiversary rolls around.  I've seen the new logo and love it.   I think you readers will love it as well.    The best part about the process is I got to spend some of my hard earned T-bills with a trans owned firm.

Thank you Koncept Kit for my TransGriot blogiversary gift to myself, and looking forward to seeing your skills turn my vision of a logo into reality.

The address of the Council on Recovery venue is 303 Jackson Hill St in Houston just off Memorial Dr and the zip is 77007.

I'll be there asking questions of our state legislators, and hope to see the room packed for this event.

Don't Hate, Emulate

Last night I was in attendance at the 2016 F.A.C.E Awards because I was nominated in two categories that I didn't win.   Hey, it happens.  I don't get very award I'm nominated for and I'm good with spreading the awards recognition and love around.

I still had a great time hanging out with my H-town crew and supporting the people who did win awards last night.

But there was a hater in the South Beach house last night who made a shady comment to Dee Dee that it  'must be nice to have friends in high places'.   It's a comment that I have had directed at me from time to time in my nearly two decades of activism..

Hater, party of one, your table is ready.

Dee Dee has been doing the work about as long as I have in this community, and was in the HERO trenches with me and the team of liberal progressive Houstonians who endured long hours of faux faith based abuse back in 2014 to get it passed.   She went to Austin to help kill those bad anti-TBLGQ bills in the 2015 Texas legislative session.

Dee Dee has also been passing out toys during the Christmas holidays in 3rd and 5th Wards for over a decade

Where was her hater?    Personally, I'm happy to see Dee Dee get recognized for doing the work she does in our community, and didn't appreciate the shady comment aimed at her.

Haters come with the territory of being our activist selves.  While they can be a nuisance at times, they also motivate me and other activists to stay and slay our activism A games.

Haters motivate me to be the best person I can be, because success at what you do is your best response to their madness.   Puts a smile on my face knowing my haters are sitting in the corner, pouting or ranting on the Net as I slay panels, getting awards or I'm being cheered and thanked by people as I enter various venues.

I'm also chatting with the H-town, Texas, national and international peeps inside and outside the trans community to do my part in building those connections I'll need to help solve trans community problems later.   I've been doing since 1998 the education to help advance understanding about our trans lives at college and universities here in the Houston area and across the nation

Translation:  I've been doing the work.

Being a good leader also means at times I'm also in a supporting role when needed.  I don't need to be in the spotlight every nanosecond or scoop up every award I'm nominated for.  That's not what I'm in the activist life for.  It's all about advancing the human rights of this community.  It's a nice bonus when you get that recognition, but doing the community's human rights work should always come first,

Yeah, it sure is nice to have 'friends in high places' as you put it.  You earn them by doing nearly 20 years of advocacy and human rights work for various communities while simultaneously treating the people you come in contact with while doing this work with dignity and respect.

It's also about making a better world for the trans kids who are coming behind us.

And I'm not going to apologize for having those so-called 'friends in high places' since I put in a lot of time and effort to cultivate those connections

So don't hate, emulate. .

5th Annual F.A.C.E. Awards Tonight

I get to pull out the nice clothes tonight as I head to the gayborhood and check out the 5th annual F.A.C.E. Awards.   Been nominated a few times since 2014 for them but as of yet haven't won one.

The F.A.C.E acronym stands for First Achievers in Community Excellence, and it is a rapidly growing event which celebrates the best of TBLGQ Houston.   This year I'm nominated in two F.A.C.E award categories with tight competition in both of them./

Today has also been declared in a proclamation signed by Mayor Sylvester Turner as 'FACE Awards Day' in Houston

Looking forward to checking out the event at South Beach that starts at 8:30 PM CST, with the red carpet arrivals and pre-award show starting at 7:00 PM

Congratulations and good luck to everyone who was nominated this year.  Even if I don't win in my categories, I'll at least get another opportunity to spend some quality time with my H-town peeps

Southern Comfort Conference Shuts Down

I first encountered the Southern Comfort Conference when it was being held at a hotel in the Buckhead area in 1999, and returned a year later to not only attend it but take part in an NTAC board meeting we held while we were in the ATL for it.

The last time I attended it was in 2004, and it saddened and shocked me to hear that this year's 2016 edition of the Southern Comfort Conference that was held in Fort Lauderdale was the last one.

Here's the announcement from the SCC board.

***

Dear SCTC family,

It is with a heavy heart that we must announce that 2016 was the last The Southern Comfort Transgender Conference (SCTC) as you have known it for the past 26 years.

What most of you don’t know is that we, the Southern Comfort Board of Directors (both current and a couple of past members), have been involved in a five year lawsuit that only recently concluded. Please don’t ask. As part of the settlement, we cannot discuss it at all.

Suffice it to say that it was a five year nightmare that completely handcuffed the BOD. Some have wondered why there were no new people brought onto the board. Now you know. Anyone that would have joined the BOD would have become unnecessarily involved in the litigation.

Fortunately, we did have liability insurance and that covered the legal fees of the case. However, as a result of being in a five year lawsuit, we were dropped by our insurance company (though they were obligated to continue until the lawsuit was resolved, which they did). Subsequently, SCTC had to find a new insurance policy. Only two companies would even offer a policy to us. Our premium went from $1300.00/year with no deductible to $11,000.00/year with a $25,000.00 deductible.

We just can’t afford this and, this lawsuit proved that we (the current BOD) simply cannot afford to run the conference without insurance. Had we not had the insurance policy, we would have been personally liable.

There is talk amongst a couple of the BOD to try to reorganize SCTC into something very new. Please continue your Facebook and Yahoo group presence to stay informed; any future updates on any plans will be posted to keep you informed. Otherwise, any money that is left in our account, which is being held in escrow by our attorney, will be donated to a worthy trans organization.

We’re sorry to bring you this sad news right before the holidays, but you deserve to know what’s going on.

It has been our extreme honor to serve you all throughout the years and we wish you all the best!

With love,
Your SCC/SCTC Board of Directors:
Shanti Keshavi devi dasi (Stefanie Schumacher)
Alexis Dee
Christy Anderson
Phyllis McCall

***

It's sad when our community loses an event like this, and makes the ones still remaining like Colorado Gold Rush, Fantasia Fair,  the Philly Trans Health Conference, and the Black Trans Advocacy Conference. Those trans themed events are needed and necessary for us to build community and meet your other trans siblings you may not get a chance to meet otherwise.

Those conferences with the demise of SCC, are even more precious to us and necessary to support and I hope you'll do that in 2017 and beyond.

Microsoft's New Holiday Ad Featuring Jazz

This is a Christmas commercial I can definitely get into.

There have been a few Christmas commercials and ads featuring fictional TBLGQ people and families in their 2016 holiday advertising

Microsoft decided to step it up another level and feature an actual TBLGQ person in their 'Art of Harmony' ads for their Microsoft Surface Studio..

Jazz Jennings is one of the people featured in the ad that also includes 7 year old Zea Bowling, who stood up to a homophobic preacher after the Obergefell SCOTUS ruling, Zianna Oliphant, who made a heartfelt speech on racial issues to the Charlotte City Council, Florida police officer Bobby White, AKA 'the basketball cop' , West African refugee  Haws Diallo, Mona Haydar, who invites people to 'Ask a Muslim' and talk to her about a wide range of issues. and Christopher Catrambone, who launched a search and rescue group for migrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea.

The people in the d are shown using the Microsoft Surface Studio to create a message of peace, love and inclusion.

And as you probably guessed the conservafools are hating on the ad.

Human Rights Activist Viola Desmond To Become First Canadian Woman On Canadian Currency

I've talked about on the blog beautician and businesswoman Viola Desmond, who nine years before Rosa Parks did so in the US, the then 32 year old was arrested for sitting in the 'White Only' section of a theater in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia while waiting for her car to be repaired.

Her action challenged anti-Black discrimination in Canada and ultimately resulted in 1954 of the repeal of segregation laws in the province of Nova Scotia.

Image result for Viola Desmond canadian 10 bill
Finance Minister Bill Morneau and Bank of Canada governor Steven Poloz announced during an event in Gatineau, Quebec on Wednesday  that out of the thousands of Canadian women nominated to be on the $10 bill in the wake of Prime Minister Trudeau's announcement on International Women's Day it would happen, the person selected would be Viola Desmond.

Wanda and Viola Desmond
Starting in 2018, she will become the person that people will see on Canadian $10 banknotes besides Queen Elizabeth II.

viola desmond stamp"It's a big day for a woman to be on a banknote. It's a really big day to have my big sister on a banknote," said her 89 year old sister Wanda Robson about the honor.
Desmond was previously honored with a Canadian postage stamp in 2012 and having a Halifax, NS harbor ferry boat named for her.

It was the culmination of a process in which 10,000 names were submitted across Canada for the honor,

The criteria for the persons submitted to be on the $10 banknote were they had to be Canadians either by birth or by naturalization, the nominee. demonstrated outstanding leadership, achievement or distinction in any field benefitting the people of Canada in the service of Canada and had to be deceased for at least 25 years. Desmond passed away in 1965 at age 50

I'd say taking down Jim Crow style segregation in Nova Scotia qualifies.  You also have to think about the fact that she as a Black woman owned her own business during that late 1940's time period time

When I asked writer Renee Martin about it,  she stated that she hopes it leads to Canadians expanding the teaching about her life that only happens in limited amounts in Grade 10 and Atlantic Canada and coming clean about the fact that anti-Black racism exists in the Great White North

But it's still amazing for me as a child of the African diaspora to see an African descended woman becoming the first Canadian woman of any ethnic background to be featured on her nation's currency.

TransGriot 2016 NFL Picks -Week 14

Image result for Texans beat Colts in indianapolis

Had a nice rebound with my Week 13 picks in which I went 13-2 to win the week and pad my lead once again in the season long prognostication contest between me and Mr. Watts.

Wish I could say the same about my fave NFL squad.  They have now dropped into a three way tie for first place in the AFC South Division st 6-6 with the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Traitors after losing three straight games.   They face the Colts in Indy this Sunday, where they are 1- 13,and only won their first game in franchise history there last year.

It isn't helping that the Harris County Arlington Cowchip traitors are arrogantly starting to open their mouths and take their Cowboys gear out of mothballs now that they have a winning record this season.

How 'bout them Cowboys?   Yeah right.   Still hate 'em, and ain't nothing changed even with a Black quarterback.  The best thing about the Cowboys when they are losing is their bandwagon riding fansbase is cricket chirping silent about them.

Enough hatin' on the Cowchips.  Moving on.  Four weeks to go to a repeat title, and have to keep the positive momentum going.

So let's do this.  16 games from now on until the end of the season.   Teams I'm picking will be in bold print, with HOME team in caps.    Mike's picks can be viewed here.

2015 US Trans Survey Results Being Released Today

2015 U.S. Trans Survey
The results from the largest transgender survey ever done are going to be released at noon CST today.

In an event that will be livestreamed from the National Press Club in Washington DC, the report and results from the 2015 US Trans Survey will be discussed as part of a launch panel discussion from 1-2 PM EST.

With 28,000 respondents ( and in case you're wondering, I was one of the people who took part in filling it out) , it is the largest trans survey compiled to date, and like its predecessor, the 2011 NTDS, will probably become the go to document for stats about the trans community.

If you want to peruse the report and executive summary from the 2015 US Trans Survey, it's available at this link in English and in Spanish.

Another Busy H-town Moni Day

Senator Sylvia R. Garcia
As you're reading this I'm sitting down in a meeting with Texas state senator Sylvia Garcia and her staff at her East End district office to discuss the state of Texas trans folks and specifically Texas trans people of color.

While this is some of the important business of the day, just as important to me is supporting my friends and the people I care about at their events when possible....

I'm following Dee Dee to the Sam Houston State University campus in Huntsville.   She gets the honor and pleasure of addressing SHSU's TBLGQ fall graduates at their Lavender Graduation ceremony.

The best part is I do get a short road trip out of it with her since Huntsville is about 70 miles north of Houston on I-45  and we'd been talking about doing a road trip together.

It's going  to make for a long day for me, but that's part of life as a community advocate

And I'm not complaining...
