2012 Texans Watch-Ouch! 11-2

The Texans played arguably their most important game in their franchise history yesterday when they showed up in Foxborough, MA with their liberty white uniforms and 6-0 road record to take on the defending AFC champion New England Patriots.

And unfortunately stunk up the joint.

The Patriots scored on their first three drives and cruised to a 42-14 loss that ended the Texans six game winning streak.   It was also their first loss in AFC conference play.

While the Texans wanted to win this game and get some national respect in the process, it's tough to beat the Pats in Massachusetts in December.  It's even tougher when you turn the ball over, don't score on your first four first half possessions and when you do create Patriot fumbles you fail to recover them. .

Despite the blowout loss, my fave NFL ballers 11-2, are still holding the number one seed in the AFC and by winning their remaining three games against the Minnesota Vikings at Reliant and their home and away AFC South games against the Indianapolis Colts can clinch it.

They can clinch their second straight AFC South title by beating the Andrew Luck led Colts this Sunday.

Arrest Made In January Lapuz Killing

I wrote back in October about the killing of our Canadian trans sister January Marie Lapuz who was found stabbed at her New Westminster, BC home on September 30 and later died at a local hospital.

It's now being reported the New Westminster, BC police on December 5 arrested Charles Jameson “Jamie” Neel with the killing of our trans sister

He has since been charged with second-degree murder and was scheduled to appear at New Westminster court on December 6.

Police investigators are still trying to ascertain the motive for Lapuz's killing, and since the case in now before the court system and the investigation is still active they have not released any further information to news outlets in the area.

Here's hoping that Neel is the person who did it, the justice system handles their business and puts him away for a long time.

Will keep y'all posted on this case.

Caroline Wozniacki, Stop Hatin' On Serena's Curves

Caroline Wozniacki was doing what she does best on a tennis court and lose to better (and sometimes worse) players than her, but took it to a racist level in Brazil last weekend.  .

During an exhibition match she was playing against Maria Sharapova in Sao Paulo, Brazil she decided to mock tennis star Serena Williams' curvaceous body by stuffing tissues in her breast and butt and waddling around the tennis court.

Of course, the predominately white crowd thought Wozniacki's antics were hilarious.

I didn't, and not just because I'm a huge Serena Williams fan.  Michael Arceneaux didn't think it was humorous in this EBONY article and 84% of the people voting in a NewsOne poll at the bottom of the story discussing Wozniacki's problematic stunt didn't think it was funny either.

And the fact this isn't the first time Wozniacki has mocked Serena that way pisses us off even more.

Once again this plays into the borderline racist disrespect aimed at the Williams Sisters ever since they have been on the women's professional tennis circuit dominating it and the disrespect aimed at Black women in general for the last 400 years.

To borrow a comment from Michael Arcenaux's article, Black women's bodies are not a joke.  We also take an extremely hard line about any disrespect aimed at Black women in general by white women.

I doubt Caroline will be laughing at the Australian Open next month if she happens to be in the same half of the draw with Little Sis and they are on opposite sides of a tennis court.

Frankly I pray that happens, and Serena pulls out a can of straight set whoop azz for Wozniacki's flat behind.

Caroline, you really need to shop hatin' on Serena's curves because you don't have them, the only way you'll will is pay a plastic surgeon some of your prize money to get them and you don't have a single Grand Slam title to show for your seven years spent as a tennis pro.

Trans TV Alert-Barbara Walters 20/20 Show Finally Airing

I posted last month about a update ABC's 20/20 was doing concerning their 2007 show about trans children.  The show was supposed to air November 2, but due to network coverage of Hurricane Sandy's landfall was pushed back to November 23.   It didn't air on that date either.

The long awaited update in which Barbara Walters visits the trans kids and their families that were interviewed for that 2007 show will finally be broadcast this Friday

I'm looking forward to seeing what's up in these trans children's lives 5 years later.

What Happened To McDonald Case Instigator Molly Shannon Flaherty?

Laverne Cox has a post up on HuffPo focused on CeCe McDonald, our Minnesota transsister who stood her ground against a hate attack instigated by a white supremacist and transphobic bigots.  Due to a massive miscarriage of justice she is unfortunately doing three years in jail behind it.

Laverne's post led me to ponder what's been happening in the legal case with Molly Shannon Flaherty, the woman who triggered that fateful June 5, 2011 altercation outside Minneapolis' Schooner Tavern that night and shoved a glass in CeCe's face that opened up a cut that took 11 stitches to close.

There was a lot of justified griping from the African-Americans trans community and our allies about the glaring reality that none of the white people involved who started this crap were facing charges or jail time like CeCe was.   The 41 year old Flaherty was arrested May 11 and charged with two felonies: second-degree assault with a deadly weapon and third-degree assault causing substantial bodily harm

Interestingly enough, Hennepin County Prosecutor Michael Freeman (D) is still trying to cover his rump and cited a unspecified conflict of interest in not prosecuting Flaherty's case in Hennepin County where it happened, but instead in Washington County

Note that ever since then and the announcement that Flaherty had been charged, it seems as though there has been a cone of silence cloaking what has happened ever since.  What's up with that?

If the Washington County prosecutors are trying to keep this quiet in the hopes that dropping this case off the news radar will allow people to forget it and give them the opportunity to let Flaherty walk for instigating this BS instead if putting her butt in jail like y'all did CeCe, umm no, that ain't happening.

It's time for the media and everybody else to ask questions in terms of what is happening in this case.  If no answers are forthcoming, then the Washington County prosecutors need to asked in front of unblinking camera eyes why.   It may also be time to light a fire under Michael Freeman's behind if necessary.

Flaherty deserves jail time and a fine for causing bodily injury to CeCe, and the trans community should not rest or let this crap slide until CeCe gets some justice out of this fracked up situation, too.instead of the heaping helpings of injustice she's had to deal with.

The Best Man 2 Coming November 2013!

I wrote about it back in October 2011 when the news first broke that one of my fave movies, The Best Man is about to get a sequel.

After the initial burst of excitement from fans of the movie like myself, hearing that Malcolm D. Lee would be writing and directing it, and hearing the entire cast wanted to reprise their roles, all we were waiting for was the date we would need to be at the multiplex for its premiere.

Seemed like that would be a no brainer decision to greenlight it since the original movie grossed $35 million, it has a huge fanbase, and a cast made up of Taye Diggs, Nia Long, Sanaa Lathan, Terrence Howard, Morris Chestnut, Monica Calhoun, Harold Perrineau and Melissa De Souza we all want to see in some new situations post that wedding weekend.

Well, the film has finally been greenlighted by Universal and the untitled Best Man 2 sequel will be at your local multiplex on November 15, 2013.

So yeah, we'll finally get to find out what happened to Mia, Lance, Jordan, Harper, Robin, Murch, Quentin and the woman they all loathed, Shelby.

As of yet no details on the basic story or trailers have been released, but you know when that finally happens I'll post that info here on the blog.

BSG Blood and Chrome-Finale

The final episodes of the Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome series...

SyFy, y'all really need to reconsider your ill advised decision to not make this a series. I would rather watch that than that BS wresting y'all put on.

GOP 2012 Christmas Gift

What the Republican Party will deservedly get for Christmas besides the electoral beatdown President Obama gave them.

Sage Smith Case Update-Sage's Birthday Approaching And She's Still Missing

Sage Smith's 20th birthday on December 13 is rapidly approaching, and the trans teen that has been missing since November 20 still has yet to be heard from by family or friends.   Someone else that hasn't been heard from besides Erik McFadden, the last person to talk to Sage is the media.

Kinda sad that if you Google 'Sage Smith', links to my blog posts pop up.   I shouldn't be one of the few peeps commenting on it, a point GLAAD's Daryl Hannah made in his HuffPo post he wrote about the lack of media coverage in this case

Yeah, I'm not happy about this, but I'll put my pissivity about this indifference toward this young POC transperson's life on pause and turn the focus of this post back toward finding our trans youngling.

A vigil and walk is happening later today starting at 6:30 PM EST.   If you live in the area and can support the family and this event, please do so.

The Vigil and March, will begin at 6:30pm Saturday at 731 Orange Dale, we will start with prayer, then words of reflection from family and friends,. Then we will walk from Orange Dale, down 9th street, up the 9th/10th street connector, right on Main street, than down to the Train station ending at around 7:30. This will symbolize the lantern shining to help Dashad find his way home, as well as the light which must be shined on his disappearance, to find out what has happened to Dashad. We also will have media there to help in spreading the word. We need peoples help in supplying the candles. We have gotten support from at least 3 area churches so far, and are trying to enlist other civic leaders.

If anyone has eyeballs on Erik McFadden or you have any pertinent information relevant to this case, please call the Charlottesville, VA Police Department at 434-977-4000.

And let's continue to pray for the safe return of Sage to her family.

Happy Hanukkah 2012

To all my Jewish TransGriot readers, wanted to take a moment to wish you all a very Happy Hanukkah!

The dates for the Festival of Lights shift every year, so the 2012 edition of it starts today at sunset and runs through December 16 this year.   Here are the Hanukkah dates for the next three years.:

2013:   November 27-December 5
2014:   December 16-24
2015:   December 6-14

With the backdrop of conflict and drama once again ensnaring Israel, Syria, Palestine, Gaza, Egypt, Iran and other countries and territories in the region, we hope and pray as fellow travelers on this big planet we share that one of the things the Middle East gets to see during this holiday season is a lessening of tensions and eventually a lasting peace.

The Long Stylish Line Of Trans Models

Right now trans models are getting more attention and media exposure.   From my homegirl Isis King to Dutch model Valentijn de Hingh to the Brazilian trio of Lea T, Felipa Tavares and Carol Marra, our transisters are not only doing it for themselves and getting their turns in the spotlight, so are gender blenders such as Serbian born Australian model Andrej Pejic and Israel's Stav Strashko.

But the history of trans models sashaying down the world's catwalks actually goes back to the 60's starting with Great Britain's April Ashley.

Ashley not long after her SRS in Casablanca on May 12,1960 and her subsequent return to England became a successful fashion model.  She appeared in Vogue magazine and also garnered a small role in the Bing Crosby and Bob Hope movie The Road To Hong Kong.

But unfortunately the transition protocols of the time period advised transwomen to never let anyone know  their trans status, and that left them being vulnerable to being outed.  In 1961 Ashley was outed by a so-called friend who sold her story to a British tabloid.   In the resulting media storm that followed her film credit in that movie was dropped and her modeling career was affected.

That pattern would plague the early pioneering trans models and serve as a major incentive for them to maintain stealth status in order to avoid Ashley's fate.

France's Amanda Lear was another model of the time who has vehemently denied she was trans.

In 1965 Lear was studying art and was spotted by Catherine Harlé, the head of a modelling agency and offered a contract.

Seeing this as a way to finance her art studies Lear accepted it and her first modelling assignment was walking for rising star Paco Rabanne.  Harlé had predicted Lear's looks would be in demand and she was on target with her prescient assessment.

Soon after her debut walking Rabanne's show Lear was photographed by Helmut Newton, Charles Paul Wilp and Antoine Giacomoni for magazines like Elle, Marie France and Vogue. She modelled for fashion designers including Yves Saint Laurent and Coco Chanel in Paris and Mary Quant, Ossie Clark and Antony Price in London.

Lear eventually dropped out of art school to model full-time and become a fixture London's swinging sixties nightlife, hanging out with her fellow model Twiggy, the Beatles, and Spanish painter Salvador Dali.

But the rumors soon started flying about Lear being a transwoman, and her status as a girl like us was alleged by none other than April Ashley.   Ashley claimed that she worked with Lear at the famed Le Carousel trans cabaret in Paris, which Lear denies.  The conflicting stories about where Lear was born and her year of birth have led people to conclude Ashley is correct.

It would take us until the 70's before the next trans model appeared and once again she was from Great Britain.

Caroline Cossey burst into international consciousness under her stage name Tula.  Her modeling career included appearances in Australian Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, extensive glamor modeling work, an appearance as a Page Three Girl in the British tabloid The Sun, and  a 1981 one in Playboy.

In 1978 she received a scare after winning a place on the British game show 3-2-1.  A tabloid journalist contacted Cossey and informed her he'd discovered she was trans and intended to write about it.  Other British journalists attempted to interview her family members.  She dropped out of the television show and for a period tried to keep a lower public profile by accepting smaller modeling assignments.

Not long after her appearance as a extra in the 1981 James Bond movie For Your Eyes Only, the tabloid story she feared would out her dropped in the News of the World.   She responded to it by continuing her modeling career, appearing in The Power Station's "Some Like It Hot" video, Playboy again in September 1991, print ads, writing two autobiographical books and engaging in activism on behalf of the trans community and herself.

Ballroom legend Tracy Africa Norman was also quietly beginning her modeling career about the time that Cossey was taking the world by storm.

Norman resembled the hot African-American model of the time period in Beverly Johnson, and from the 70's through the 80's she not only walked the runways of New York and Paris, she was represented by the third largest modeling agency in New York.

Norman had major commercial contracts with Clairol, Ultra Sheen and Avon Cosmetics in addition to doing five ESSENCE magazine shoots

She was working on her sixth ESSENCE magazine cover, a booking for the magazine's holiday issue when a shady character from her old neighborhood who happened to be on that set recognized her and outed her to ESSENCE magazine editor Susan L. Taylor

In the wake of that outing Norman moved to Paris and did runway work there until moving back to New York and becoming an iconic fixture in the New York balloom community.

In the 80's we have several to talk about including the first open trans model.

South African born model Lauren Foster was born on December 4, 1957.  She grew up in Durban and realizing her gender issues at age 9, transitioned as a teen and adopted the name Lauren Shipton in 1974.

After having SRS she left Durban and began working as a model in Johannesburg and Paris.

Her big break came when she was hired by Vogue magazine in 1980 to do a six page fashion editorial and her career took off after that.

It was temporarily derailed by a model she'd worked with in Paris who sold her story to the tabloid SCOPE after Foster was disqualified from competing in the Miss South Africa pageant..

As was the infuriating pattern during those days, she was hounded by the press and her career suffered until another trans model came on the New York fashion horizon in Teri Toye.  Foster's career was revived and lasted until 1988.

Lauren is currently working on her autobiography Danse Sauvage and you can see her on this season's episodes of the reality TV show The Real Housewives of Miami

Teri Toye, who I mentioned while discussing Lauren Foster, was the first open trans model.

Teri originally traveled to New York City from Iowa to become a fashion designer and was enrolled as a student at the famed Parsons School of Design in 1984.   She transitioned while there and became a fixture of New York's eclectic nightlife scene.

After a chance meeting with designer Stephen Sprouse, Teri opened his runway show and became an instant modeling sensation in New York and Paris.

Toye eventually walked the runways for Jean Paul Gaultier, Comme des Garçons, and Chanel, and posed on the pages of German Vogue. She worked with supermodel Janice Dickinson, was represented by the major modeling agencies Click Models in New York and City in Paris,
was considered as a muse by photographers Steven Meisel and Nan Goldin and designer David Armstrong.  Her good looks also kept her consistently in demand.

But as quickly as Teri's modeling star rose, she disappeared from the fashion world and returned to Des Moines, IA

Meanwhile as Teri Toye was getting attention, Roberta Close was breaking barriers in Brazil.
She began her modeling and film career at age 17  She appeared in a popular Brazilian soap opera and print ads, was the first trans woman to appear on the cover of Brazilian Playboy (while preoperative), and hosted a late night talk show in her homeland.

She eventually had SRS in Britain in 1989, appeared in a post-operative photo spread in the Brazilian mens magazine Sexy and was voted the 'Most Beautiful Woman In Brazil'.

There's also the interesting story of Barbara Diop.  She is a Senegalese model who was working in Italy and South Africa, appeared in Italian Vogue and who was unfortunately outed during the 2003 Cricket World Cup tournament that was hosted in South Africa.

Diop has a look that reminds me of supermodel Alek Wek and du
ring the Olympic style parade of nations they used during the opening ceremony for it in Cape Town to kick off the multi week competition,  Diop was the only African model hired to hold the national placards as the team from Zimbabwe marched into the stadium behind her

Six days into the competition the rumors started flying that Diop was trans. .She initially denied it, but the international media sharks began to circle and kept investigating to the point where Diop eventually admitted her trans status. It trigged outrage from homobigot Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe who threatened to yank his team out of the competition.  Zimbabwe's sorry performance in it took care of that for him before he could follow through on his bombastic rhetoric.

But unfortunately we haven't heard much about Barbara Diop's life post Cricket World Cup.   She is alleged to have undergone SRS in the wake of that event and is presumed to still have a modeling career, but that has been unconfirmed for now.   My inquiring mind would sure like to know what happened to her.

Harisu in South Korea garnered international attention at the dawn of the 21st century.  She was born in Seoul on February 17, 1975, transitioned as a teen, had SRS, studied and lived in Japan for several years before returning to South Korea in 2000

After being featured in a 2001 commercial for DoDo cosmetics Harisu quickly became a media sensation as the first open transsexual media personality in Korea.   She branched out into other entertainment areas such as music and acting in addition to her modeling career.

She also became in 2002 the second transperson in Korea to legally change her gender on her identity documents and eventually got married to her longtime boyfriend Micky Jung in 2007.

So for those transgirls who are dreaming of walking the international fashion runways and the current crop of trans models working towards achieving supermodel status and other goals, note that you have a proud history to look up to.

Note these people who walked in your pumps and broke down the barriers so you would have a less stressful time in doing so and you can just focus on being the best model you can be.

Know that you are part of a long stylish line of #girlslikeus who happen to excel at sashaying down those fashion catwalks and use it as a way to get their foot in the doors of other careers.

In many cases, as they advanced their careers, those trans models also helped advance the human rights, visibility and humanity of transpeople around the world.

Shut Up Fool Awards- A Date That Will Live In Infamy Edition

Today is the 71st anniversary of the Japanese surprise attack on the Pearl Harbor naval base and other American military facilities on Oahu at 7:55 AM local time.

The surprise Japanese attack on the bases and airfields in the area from six carriers commanded by Imperial Japanese Navy Admiral Chuichi Nagumo and a two wave carrier aircraft strike force under the command of IJN Captain Mitsuo Fuchida resulted in the entrance of the United States into World War II..

Today is also Friday, and that means we'll have to handle my usual business of selecting the name or names of the fool, fools or group of fools that will live in infamy on these electronic pages with his week's Shut Up Fool Award.

Speaking of selections, time is rapidly drawing to a close to get your nominations in for who you think should be my 2012 Shut Up Fool of the Year.  I'll announce it on New Year's Eve.

Now let's see who won this week's SUF award.

Honorable mention number one goes to Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who played himself on the Senate floor yesterday in embarrassing fashion.

Honorable mention number two goes to Ted Nugent for suggesting that the budget deal should include a provision suspending the voting rights of welfare recipients.

Honorable mention number three goes to the 38 Republican senators who voted against ratifying a UN treaty based on our Americans With Disabilities act to the entire planet .  They did so in front of former Sen. Bob Dole (R-KS), who worked tirelessly along with GOP presidents GHW Bush and GW Bush to make the law and the treaty happen.

This week's SUF winner is Rev CL Bryant, the former president of the NAACP chapter in Garland, TX and a Tea Klux Klan member.    This cookie chomping useful fool is the one they trot out when the Teabaggers want to deny their racism.  Yesterday he and ATL mayor Kasim Reed were on MSNBC and Bryant flat out lied (as usual) about the history of Black people and why we vote at 90% percent clips for Democrats.

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

And hell to the yeah, you deserve this award too.

Better be glad it was Thomas Roberts conducting that interview and not Tamron Hall because she would have chewed you up and spit you butt out for lunch for those straight up blatant lies you told.

Oh yeah, Rev CL Bryant, shut up you Oreo cookie chomping fool.

.

Trans History-Roberta Close

Contrary to this article implying that trans models like Lea T, Felipa Torres and Carol Marra are some 21st century twist to the Brazilian modeling scene, that isn't the case.  There was a trans woman strutting the catwalks in Brazil and elsewhere in the world back in the 80's.

This latest group of twentysomething Brazilian models need to bow down and recognize their trans sister who paved the way for them to be able to strut those catwalks in Rio, New York, Milan and Paris.

The pioneering transwoman in question is Roberta Gambine Moreira, who was born on this date in 1964 in Rio de Janiero.

Known professionally as Roberta Close, she started surreptitiously taking hormones in her teens and began her modeling and film career at age 17.

The 5'10 1/2" beauty won the Miss Gay Brazil pageant at age 20, appeared in a popular Brazilian soap opera and print ads.

She was the first trans woman to appear on the cover of Brazilian Playboy (while preoperative), and hosted a late night talk show in her homeland.  Even though she was comfortable with her pre-op status during that time period, she eventually had SRS in Britain in 1989, appeared in a post-operative photo spread in the  Brazilian mens magazine Sexy and was voted the 'Most Beautiful Woman In Brazil'.

In 1993 she married her Swiss manager, Roland Granacher, in Europe since in Roman Catholic Brazil she wasn't able to do so.

She also fought a lengthy legal battle in the Brazilian court system to challenge the laws that refused to recognize her femininity in her documentation.  She lost an initial round in 1997 and another in 2003, but eventually won her case to have her birth documentation changed.

On March 4, 2005, Roberta Close acquired legal status as a female in Brazil after Judge Leise Rodrigues de Lima Espiritu Santo of the 9th Family Court of Rio de Janeiro legally recognized her as a woman.

Roberta Close is the reason that the current crop of Brazilian trans models have their opportunities to make it in the fashion world today, and hope these 21st century ladies appreciate the barriers Roberta broke down for them.

2012 TransGriot NFL Picks-Week 14

My hometown NFL ballers have clinched their AFC playoff spot with their 24-10 win last week against the Tennessee Titans Traitors to move to a franchise best 11-1.  But this upcoming Monday night game with the 9-3 New England Patriots will be a titanic challenge for them.

They'll march into Gillette Stadium clad in their liberty white road uniforms with a 6-0 road record. They are attempting to clinch home field advantage all the way through the AFC playoffs against a team that rarely loses games at home in December..

If the Texans handle their business they will also clinch the AFC South Division title for the second straight year with a Colts loss.   The Colts are playing the Tennessee Traitors this week in Indy.  .

Speaking of handling my business, the seven game lead I once had over Mr Watts is gone thanks to the Colts beating the Lions on the last play of their game, the Browns winning their first road game against the Raiders and me going 9-7 last week while Mike went 10-6.   So we're all even with this week and three more to go.

Arrgh.   Well, I knew this wasn't going to be easy when I had that seven game lead, so let's get to work    Mike's picks are here, mine are as usual in underlined bold print.

What's The 4-1-1 With The DSM-V And Trans People?

Ever since the announcement was made Saturday that the APA Board of Trustees approved the changes made to the DSM-V, confusion has reigned over whether the trans community was depathologized or what exactly happened to the Gender Identity Disorder diagnosis.

Was it a watershed event similar to what happened when homosexuality started in 1973 on the road to being depathologized across several DSM's?  Is it as some people are arguing a status quo event?  Or is it as some people are contending we didn't get depathologized and in fact the trans community is in an even worse position than we were in previously?

From Naomi Fontanos, executive director of Ganda Filipinas who also sits on the board of WPATH:
To my friends who are asking about the confusing reports about the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) V of the American Psychiatric Association (APA). Here are the facts:

1. Gender Identity Disorder (GID) will only be replaced with a new name, Gender Dysphoria (GD), which is still classified as a sexual disorder in the DSM. GD will still be used to psychopathologize transgender and gender diverse people of all ages including children.

2. GID was not delisted from the DSM like homosexuality was delisted in 1973.

3. The DSM V will also include Transvestic Disorder that will replace Transvestic Fetishisim. Transvestic Disorder will include anyone who engages in sexual activity and wears the clothing of the gender that one was NOT ASSIGNED to him or her at birth. This diagnosis affects a large portion of transcommunities around the world.

Until GD is removed from the DSM, the fight to depsychopathologize the humanity of transgender people continues!

Kelley Winters, who has been fighting the GID reform battle for years, had this to say: in her post breaking down the gender diagnoses
"Despite retention of the unconscionable Transvestic Disorder category, I believe that the Gender Dysphoria category revisions in the DSM-5 will bring some long-awaited forward progress to trans and transsexual people facing barriers to social and medical transition. I hope that much more progress will follow."

Julia Serano also commented on the DSM-5 controversy.

In case you're wondering what the TransGriot's postion is on this DSM-V revision hereit is.:I'm in favor of trans being depathologized and removed from both the DSM and the ICD, but have a medical protocol in place so that trans related healthcare can be covered by insurance.

So stay tuned, the debate is still raging over what exactly did happen concerning the trans community and the DSM-V.

But what it does do is heighten the importance that the international trans community gets busy collectively making sure the job of trans depathologization is done properly as the World Health Organization takes up the task of revising their ICD-11 manual.

Black In America-Who Is Black In America?

I know many people in the African-American community have had lukewarm reactions (myself included) about the CNN 'Black In America' series hosted by Soledad O'Brien.

After having a chat with Niece (AKA Dr. Kaila A. Story) I'm going to give it another chance in this episode that features the research of Dr. Yaba Blay.  In its latest incarnation that debuts on December 9, they will tackle the topic of colorism in our community.

What makes someone Black in America?   Is it skin color? History? Culture? All of the above?

It's also an issue that Soledad has personal expecience with because she has a Black Cuban mother and claims both her Black and Latina heritage.

The latest episode of the Black In America series will tackle that topic starting at 8 PM ET/7 PM CT.

Divine Nine Sororities, Are You Open To Trans Women Joining?

Because of my elder stateswoman status in the trans community and this blog I'm blessed to have, I do get my fair share of inquiries from trans people about various issues that affect us.

Sometimes it's just a person looking for advice. Another time it may be someone needing just a kind word from somebody who has been down the road they are traveling.

And far too often it's from another African descended trans woman frustrated about being the lone POC in a predominately white group and feeling marginalized as a member of it..

Last night I engaged in a Facebook chat with a young African-American trans woman who is in college.  She has been transitioned for almost a decade, is interested in fulfilling her dream of pledging a Divine Nine sorority and asked me if it was feasible to do so.

That was a good question that I asked in a March 21, 2007 post

So that begs the question. If the Divine Nine sororities embrace all women, does that include myself and other transwomen as well?

It's a valid question because those four sororities have over a half million members and have already embraced Latina, Asian and White women as members.   They are powerful professional organizations within the African-American community, have a rich history and legacy, have international reach and count as members accomplished women in business, government, entertainment, sports, the arts, the armed forces and the media

I implored the various sororities to get ahead of the curve on the issue of trans membership while they can do so on their terms because with kids transitioning at earlier ages, this issue was going to crop up sooner or later.

Now in December 2012, that issue may be at hand.

So what was my answer to that trans woman in question?   I gave her a 'it depends' response.

It depends on the organization, the particular chapter on the college campus you pledge at, how open minded the members of that chapter are, the region of the country and their attitudes about #girlslikeus .

Maybe these sororities already have trans women in their ranks that I'm not aware of.   Maybe these organizations have begun at the national leadership level quietly going about the work of opening their doors to trans women as they have previously done  with our lesbian and bi sisters

But that uncertainty about where each Divine Nine sorority stands on the question of admitting trans women doesn't give me the confidence to tell a young trans woman dreaming about proudly wearing the Greek letters of those orgs and their colors yes or no about pledging one.

I'm happy to report she's determined and tough minded enough to do it anyway.

I would hope that if a qualified #girllikeus decided she was down with the historic mission of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta or Sigma Gamma Rho, loved that sorority's history, was qualified to be a member, and wanted to be a part of building their legacy for a new century of service she would be invited to do so and not disrespectfully turned away.

DSM-V Approved By APA Board Of Trustees

One of the things the trans community has been vocal about and closely watching is the revision process for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, also known as the DSM-V.

Since the 1980 publication of the DSM-III gender identity disorder has been part of the diagnostic manual along with the negative connotations and baggage that go along with it.   But when the DSM-V is published in May 2013, the term Gender Identity Disorder will be replaced with “Gender Dysphoria.”

On Saturday the changes were approved by the American Psychiatric Associations Board of Trustees and it includes one groundbreaking change that I talked about in a post back in August in terms of the depathologization of being transgender.

Many people in the trans community are hailing it as a watershed event similar to what happened when homosexuality was removed from the DSM in 1973 and the corresponding progress of the gay rights movement as a result.

There are others sounding cautionary notes about this development, openly stating nothing changed or are focused on the ICD-11 revisions currently underway.  .

When May 2013 gets here, the DSM-V will be published and the changes made to the diagnosis for trans people will be etched in that manual until the next revision happens.

What effect the DSM-V will have on our trans lives is yet to be determined.

Costas Critiques Gun Violence, Wingers Start Tripping

During halftime of the Cowboys-Eagles Sunday night game, NBC sports anchor Bob Costas took some time to comment on the murder-suicide of Javon Belcher that occurred Saturday.

Needless to say it the right wing gun fetishists have gone nuts over it.   In addition to the usual pro-gun talking points being spouted by the Right Wing Noise Machine, the gun fetishists have started trying to get Costas fired from the the network.   Good luck with that conservafools.

Frack 'em.  It needed to be said, and bravo Bob Costas and Jason Whitlock for saying what need to be said about the unacceptable levels of gun violence ruining far too many lives in this country..

Miss Canada Universe 2012 Is A Sistah!

While I didn't get to see Jenna Talackova take the 2012 Miss Canada Universe crown, I'll have another reason to watch the Miss Universe pageant besides seeing if Miss USA finally wins the title for the first time in over a decade or booing Donald Chump Trump when it's televised from Las Vegas on December 19.

I'll have even more of a reason to watch in 2013.  The Miss Universe pageant system will be open to trans women, so it should be interesting to see if any trans woman wins their national pageant next year.

But back to discussing Canadian pageant developments.

If you ever wondered if the first runner up ever get to compete or move up to become the main titleholder, yes they do for various reasons.

Turns out Miss Canada Universe 2012 Sahar Biniaz due to hurting her foot days before she was supposed to arrive in Las Vegas December 2-4 for the rehearsals and the Miss Universe preliminary competition that will take place December 13, will not be able to represent the Great White North.

Because of Biniaz's injury, the Miss Canada Universe pageant's first runner up, 24 year old Adwoa Yamoah from Calgary will take her place as Canada's representative in this pageant.   The 1.75m beauty (5'9") will join the other 88 women from around the world competing for the Miss Universe 2012 title and be crowned by outgoing Miss Universe 2011 queen Leila Lopes..

I'll have to double check that, but I believe Yamoah also becomes the first African descended woman to represent Canada at Miss Universe.  She was born in Accra, Ghana and moved to Canada as a child.

So yep, may have to put down the Stars and Stripes and root for the north of the border contestant even though Miss USA hasn't won it since 1999.

Good luck Adwoa.
