Chick-Fil-A Marriage Oppressors: You're Losing

All you peeps who called yourselves 'standing up for free speech'  or whatever lie you told yourselves to justify buying Chick-Fil-A to fund the oppression of fellow Americans are giddy right now after last Wednesday, but the bottom line is that you are still on the wrong side of history.

It's not a question of if, but when the unjust Defense of Marriage Act law goes down but when.

There have already been three federal court rulings declaring DOMA unconstitutional and before you conservafools go there, two came from George W Bush appointed federal judges.

When that day happens or the court case hits the Supreme Court that puts them in the position of having to rule DOMA as unconstitutional, you'll be choking on those waffle fries because the state level anti-gay marriage prohibition amendments y'all spent all that money on to enact will die as well.

But the bottom line is that you're not only on the wrong side of history, you're losing in your nonstop efforts to oppress TBLG people.

Happy 50th Independence Day, Jamaica!

Like me and many of my friends, 1962 is a special year for the island nation of Jamaica..  It was 50 years ago on this date that a ceremony occurred signaling that the Jamaican Independence Act was now in force, it was no longer a British colony after 307 years of British rule and from this day forward Jamaica would handle its business as an independent nation.

At a few moments before midnight on August 5, 1962 at the National Stadium in Kingston the Union Jack was lowered for the last time and replaced with the brand new black, gold and green flag of a newly independent nation.  .

It triggered several joyous days of celebration across the island before the day to day business of running their nation began with the August 7 opening of the first Jamaican parliament.

Like all nations in their post-independence day phase Jamaica has had their good times and bad times, but the 2.8 million people who live in the third largest Anglophone country in the Western Hemisphere and their people across the Jamaican Diaspora love their country, are proud of its accomplishments, and proud of their Jamaican heritage.

They wish to use this 50th Anniversary year to reflect on Jamaica's past half century, learn the lessons from them, dream of a better Jamaica and get to work building that nation for future generations.

The people of Jamaica are also determined to imagine a better future for themselves and their country and work hard to achieve it.

And now, please rise for the Jamaican national anthem, a song we US track fans got way too familiar with during the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 and are hearing again during these London Games.

Seriously, to all my TransGriot readers there, happy 50th Independence Day, Jamaica!.

2012 Olympic Watch-Marlen Esparza Starts Boxing For Gold Today

I'm keeping up with my Houston area homeboys and homegirls who are involved in the London Games, and one of the people I'm most interested in seeing is 23 year old boxer Marlen Esparza from Pasadena.

She a trailblazer in her own right in terms of not only being part of the first ever USA women's Olympic boxing team, but being the first Latina athlete to have a Cover Girl endorsement.   She's also appearing in commercials for McDonald's, Coca-Cola and other brands.

She was not only interviewed for a recent Vogue magazine article, but was also one of the people featured in CNN's most recent episode of Latino In America

And yeah, did I mention that Marlen is all that in the boxing ring as well?   She's a five time national champion with a 69–2 record and has been ranked number one in her weight class since she was 16.  The 97% of her fights she has won is higher than the 93% winning percentage of Muhammad Ali (88-9) and Floyd Mayweather, Jr.(84–6) and the 89% Mike Tyson compiled with his 48–6 amateur record.

The birthday girl (July 29) is ready for the first ever women's Olympic boxing tournament to start.  She will compete in the 51kg flyweight classification and had to gain six pounds to do so.

She did secure one of the tournament byes and went straight to the quarterfinal round.  She will await the winner of the match between Brazil's Erica Matos and Venezuela's Karlha Maglioccio and hopefully being a historic run to the first ever women's flyweight Olympic gold medal.

2012 Olympic Watch-USA vs Canada In Olympic Women's Soccer Knockout Semis

Back in January the USA and Canadian women's soccer teams met in the CONCACAF qualifying tournament that was held in Vancouver to determine who the two reps from our FIFA region would be for the London Olympics.   It was a match that had a disappointing ending for our northern neighbors as the USA beat Canada 4-0.

Fast forward to August and we are now deep into the Olympic women's soccer tournament knockout rounds.   Surprise surprise, Canada and the USA are facing each other on one side of the women's Olympic soccer semifinal bracket while FIFA world champ Japan takes on France in the other semifinal.

Canada knocked off the host nation Great Britain 2-0 in the quarters while Team USA was doing the same thing to New Zealand by the same 2-0 score.

The win over New Zealand kept their streak alive of playing in the semifinals of all the Olympic tournaments in which women's soccer has been contested.   Team USA women have also played in the semifinals of all six FIFA Women's World Cups.

The semifinal match will take place tomorrow at Old Trafford in Manchester, England starting at 1:45 PM CDT.   It will be the 500th international match that the USA women have played and just in case you're wondering, they have a 388-57-54 record.

But back to tomorrow's game.   Since the opening 4-2 win against France, Hope Solo and Team USA have posted a 4-0 record and have posted three shutouts.   But we're facing our neighbors with a chance to go to the Olympic gold medal match on the line.

And bragging rights between moi and a certain Canadian blogger are on the line as well.

POTUS Weekly Address-Celebrating The Summer Olympics and Paralympics Athletes

President Obama salutes our Olympic and Paralympic athletes in this edition of his weekly address

Damn, Can A Gold Medal Winning Sistah Enjoy It?

Gabrielle Douglas was a major part of the first USA women's gymnastics team Tuesday night effort to win the team competition gold for only the second time since the 'Magnificent Seven' pulled off that feat in Atlanta in 1996.

Gabby then followed it up on Thursday by making more history.   She became the first African-American gymnast to win the all around title and the first American gymnast to win the team and all-around gold medals in the same Olympiad.

Serena Williams dominated the Olympic women's tennis singles competition field at 'Williams'-don so throughly she only dropped a total of 17 games and didn't lose a set.

In the gold medal match it took her a mere 63 minutes to win in dominating 6-0, 6-1 fashion over Russia's Maria Sharapova.

In the process Williams became the first tennis player ever to win golden slams in singles and doubles.

She and her big sister Venus go for a golden repeat title in Olympic women's doubles on Sunday against the Czech Republic's duo of Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka in the gold medal match.in a few hours.

But did whiteness and white supremacist addled people give these women or their proud African-American community a chance to celebrate their hard earned victories in peace?

Hell naw.   Black female trailblazing athletes are always catching hell from somebody that has a problem with them on some level .

First came the snide comments from some quarters because reigning gymnastics world champ Jordyn Wieber failed to qualify for the all-around competition and her tears were beamed all over the world.   I'll admit I even felt sorry for Wieber for a moment until some of the online conversation and even the media started trying to minimize Gabby's contributions to that Fab Five's win.

Then I got pissed.

That was rapidly followed by ignorant knee-grow Twitterverse peanut gallery obsessing about Gabby's hair which whiteness then picked up on.

It was folowed up on Thursday night by NBC's clueless running of a promo commercial for one of the fall shows it's heavily promoting called Animal Practice which featured a monkey doing ring gymnastics.

Cute commercial, only one major problem.   NBC ran it immediately after Bob Costas had just done a  segment commenting on Gabby's historic all around win that was tape delayed in the US to show in primetime.

What's the problem with that?  Plenty.  It may have been unintentional, but when Black people of both genders have been disrespectully compared to animals for over four centuries, that was a seriously problematic timing for that ad somebody in the production truck should have caught.

Combine that with people already being pissed off about how far too much of NBC's televised coverage for the London games has been tape delayed.

NBC apologized for it, but yeah, as much as I riff on Fox Noise for their racism and I'm about to do again, I have to call it out when questionable race related stuff happens even on networks I watch on the regular.

Now moving on to Serena.  She celebrated in the aftermath of her microwave tennis win by doing the crip-walk dance before changing into her USA warmup suit and receiving her hard earned gold medal.

Cue all the Williams haters and the racist idiots at Fox Noise trying to stir some stuff up I've gots to call their  vanillacentric privileged hater tots chomping behinds on.

Fox Noise has been hatin' on Serena Williams for a while and took the opportunity to swipe at her again courtesy of a Reid Forgrave article posted on their website..
Seriously Reid Forgrave?  You conservafools are really trying to live up to your hatin' on Black folks reputation.

You GOP propagandists trying to claim that Serena's crip-walk dance celebration of her Olympic singles gold medal is 'embarrassing the USA in front of the UK and the world' is laughable.

Hell, even Gabby briefly danced the Dougie after her wins.

Let's be real for a moment. Your boy Mittbot caused far more embarrassment to the United States in front of the UK and the world on that travesty of a foreign trip last week to the UK, Israel and Poland than a few seconds of Serena happily dancing for a few seconds after celebrating her well deserved golden win ever will.   Serena's celebratory dance didn't inflame Middle East tensions, piss of the Palestinians, Prime Minister David Cameron, London mayor Boris Johnson, and cause multiple international incidents like Mitt Romney cluelessly did.

Y'all are just pissed off that the Williams sisters, despite injuries, the constant micro and macroaggresive racist drama y'all put them through continue to kick the butts of your eastern European tennis glamazons on the world tour on a regular basis and are unapologetically Black while doing so.

But damn, can a gold medal winning sistah enjoy it?

2012 Olympic Watch-Serena's Golden!

Just finished watching Little Sis blitz Russia's Maria Sharapova 6-0, 6-1 in a little over an hour to capture the 2012 Olympic women's singles gold medal.

Serena not only didn't drop a set in this golden run to the singles title at the All England Club, she only lost 17 games total while doing so.

Serena also made a little history in the process.  Little Sis is the first female player ever to achieve the career Golden Slam in singles and doubles.

The Golden Slam is winning all four major tennis tournaments plus winning an Olympic singles gold medal.  To recap, Serena just picked up her singles gold in London, and is on track with Big Sis to possibly win doubles gold.   She and Big Sis won doubles gold in 2000 and 2008.

Speaking of the London Olympic doubles tournament, my fave tennis playing siblings will take on the Russian duo of  Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova in the semifinals of the women's doubles tournament, with the winners challenging the Czech Republic's duo of Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka in the gold-medal match.

They beat Hlavackova and Hradecka a few weeks ago for their 'Williams'-don doubles title, and the way Serena is playing right now I have no doubts should they get past the Russian duo they will do so again.

But you still have to platy the matches.

Congrats Serena.  If anyone doubted (or hated on the fact) that you are one of the greatest tennis players of all time, they don't have much of an argument any more.

TransGriot Update:  Serena and Venus are in tomorrow's doubles final after beating Kirilenko and Petrova in straight sets 7-5, 6-4.

Happy 51st Birthday Mr. President!

Today as those of us in reality based world know is the 51st birthday of our president Barack Hussein Obama II.  The divorced from reality birthers may believe that he wasn't born in Honolulu, HI but the rest of us and his birth certificate says otherwise along with that 1961 birth announcement. .

In less than 100 days we have an extremely critical election coming up on November 6, and I can think of no better present to give to the POTUS than four more years in the White House .

Hey it's one of the few times in your life you can give a birthday gift to someone that will benefit you as well.

Happy birthday President Obama!.  May you have many more of them as a resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave through 2016.

They Mad

Whether it's the African-American occupants of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue to the Olympic all around champion and my favorite tennis playing siblings, the vanillacentric privilege that drives the hate, snide comments and animosity aimed at trailblazing African Americans is still prevalent in 'post-racial' America.

Shut Up Fool Awards-First Olympic Weekend Edition

Hard to believe that a week has passed since I was parked in front of the television along with the rest of the planet eagerly awaiting the start of the opening ceremonies for the 2012 Olympic Games.

This first week of competition from London has been a joy to watch.  With the athletics competition (track and field) starting today and many team events still moving toward medal round conclusions, we still have more thrilling Olympic memories, upsets, and joyful medal ceremonies to watch until August 17.

Then will come (sniff sniff) the closing ceremonies and we'll have to wait until the world gathers in Rio for the 2016 Summer Games.

While I've had my eyes on the marvelous sporting happenings and Olympic history taking place in jolly old England, it's also an election year in the States, it's Friday, and y'all know what I do at 12 noon CDT on these electronic pages.

Yep, it's time for this week's edition of the Shut Up Fool awards.  Since I'm feeling the Olympic spirit until the closing ceremonies of the Games happen and there are just so many fools to spotlight every week, I'm going to give out gold, silver and bronze level Shut Up Fool awards.

We had many contenders for these award ranging from Fox Noise, the Republican Party, Chick-Fil-A, Rep Trent Franks (R-AZ) , Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), Rep Eric Cantor (R-VA), Stephen Marks, Eric Fehrnstrom, Rep Steve King (R-IA). Andrea Saul, Michael Steele, Ron Christie, Gretchen Carlson, Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), the 8 banned Olympic badminton contestants, Michel Morganella Voula Papachristou, .Mike Huckabee, R. Clarke Cooper, and Mitt Romney
.
So let's see who ended up on the top step of the Shut up Fool awards podium this week, shall we?

Our Shut Up Fool bronze medal goes to Rep Louie Gohmert (R-TX)  He said the new Health & Human Services Department rule — which requires most employers to provide free birth control coverage in their health insurance policies — was like prohibiting Jews from worshiping on the Sabbath or banning communion.

I'm not gonna even waste any more bandwith on this fool.    Let's move on.

Our Shut Up Fool silver medal goes to Tennessee conservafool state representative Kelly Keisling (R) who forwarded an e-mail to his constituents with the latest conspiracy theory from the batturd crazy wing that claims President Obama is going to fake an assassination attempt on his life, and in the wake of that declare martial law in order to delay the November elections.

Dude, have you checked the polls lately?  He's winning.  Y'all wish the presidential election was being  delayed

Our Shut up Fool Gold Medal goes to Rep Mike Kelly (R-PA) . Kelly on Wednesday ridiculously equated the August first phase in of ACA women's healthcare mandates to terrorism and Pearl Harbor.

"I want you to remember August 1, 2012 — the attack on our religious freedom. That is a date that will live in infamy, along with those other dates."

Dude, 'religious freedom' doesn't mean you conservafools get to be a bigoted as you wanna be or force your belief systems on everybody else.

It means clear separation of church and state. If the Catholic Church wants to use federal tax dollars to fund its programs, then it is subject to federal laws period with no exceptions.

And besides, i hardly think that free mammograms, getting contraception and the other preventative health care that the Affordable Care Act ushers in is a date that live in infamy.   People lost lives during 9-11 and the Pearl Harbor attacks and it is disrespectful to those people's memories and their families that you would say some foul crap like that.

Rep. Mike Kelly, shut up Fool!

2012 Olympic Watch-London Blowout

Team USA's mens b-ballers are 2-0 in Group A play and despite a comfortable 98-71 win over France and a 110-63 win over Tunisia, there were two things I had been worried about with this team.

I'd been concerned about the slow starts of the starting five players, who were being majorly outscored by the bench brigade 180-10 and the abysmal three point shooting so far.

The new FIBA 3-point line is a foot shorter than the NBA distance and I was wondering if that was impacting them  After yesterday's record setting 156-73 game against Nigeria that tore up the Olympic basketball record books, I'm not worrying about their three point shooting abilities for the rest of this tournament.

Their winning margin of 83 points beat Team USA's previous Olympic best of 72 points against Thailand set during a 101-29 win in 1956.   Kobe Bryant got an initial 13-0 scoring run started with a three ball on the opening possession of the game as the USA lit up a Nigerian team that started the game packing the paint with a record setting 29-46 barrage from 3 point range (63 percent) and shot 71 percent for the game.

Team USA scored 49 points in the first quarter, had 78 by halftime, passed the 100 point mark midway in the third quarter and after Andre Igoudala hit another (ho hum) three pointer with 4:37 left in the game to give them a 139-68 lead, they surpassed the previous Olympic record 138 points Brazil scored in a 1988 game with Egypt.

The 78 first half points broke the old Olympic record of 72 scored by that same 1988 Oscar Schmidt led Brazilian team against China.
.
Oh yeah, considering FIBA basketball quarters are only 10 minutes long, unlike the 12 minute ones you get in the NBA, the numbers are eye popping to say the least.

Carmelo Anthony's 37 points in 14 minutes of work thanks to 10-12 three point shooting broke the 31 point US Olympic record set by Stephon Marbury against Spain in 2004.

The 2012 Team USA even one-upped the 1992 Dream Team. The 83-point margin of victory eclipsed the 79 point spread that the Dream Teamers put on Cuba when they beat them 136-57.

But playtime is over for Team USA with games against Lithuania on Saturday and Manu Ginobili-led Argentina waiting for them on the schedule.

Campus Pride Calls on University Leaders to Uphold Non-Discrimination Policies And End Chick-fil-A Relationships

"No college or university wants to be associated with hate.”

TransGriot Note: From Campus Pride

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Campus Pride, the leading national nonprofit for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) and ally college students, condemns Chick-Fil-A for their funding of documented hate groups and asks that colleges and universities across the country disassociate with Chick-Fil-A immediately, as follows:
  • Pass a student government policy/resolution that expresses opposition to Chick-Fil-A on the basis of their direct funding of documented hate groups and prevents further association with the brand Chick-Fil-A.
  • End food service contracts that include Chick-Fil-A, amend these contracts, or refuse negotiations with companies like the Aramark Corporation, which include Chick-Fil-A among dining choices.
  • Pull out of conferences, events and sports games where Chick-Fil-A is a sponsor.
“If colleges wish to create an atmosphere that is respectful, inclusive, diverse and fosters safety for all students, then associating with Chick-Fil-A, which is on record funding documented hate groups, is downright wrong and has to end immediately,” said Shane Windmeyer, executive director of Campus Pride. “Saying ‘no’ to Chick-Fil-A is saying 'no' to hate.”

Over the past decade, college student leaders have long protested Chick-Fil-A due to its discriminatory stances and have asked for its removal from retail dining options offered on campus. New York University, University of Southern Mississippi, Indiana University, Duke University and University of North Carolina Wilmington are among such institutions and reflect the wide spread efforts to kick Chick-Fil-A off campus for not adhering to campus policies of nondiscrimination.

“Chick-Fil-A and its founding family have the right to believe, say and do whatever they want -- including funding hate groups. This issue is not about freedom of speech. Campus Pride respects every individual or company's right to express their opinions and beliefs – even if these beliefs are counter to our values,” said Windmeyer.

“The real issue is about choosing businesses to operate on campus that uphold campus policies of nondiscrimination and that do not funnel monies to documented hate groups. Doing so, impedes a college from being a safe space for all students to learn, live and grow.”

Chick-Fil-A funding of documented hate groups, like the Family Research Council (FRC), which advocates the criminalization and death of LGBT people, is clearly unacceptable. In 2010, Chick-Fil-A supported FRC and its $25,000 effort to stop the United States Congress from passing a bill denouncing the execution of homosexuals in Uganda. The company also sponsored Exodus International, an "ex-gay" group claiming to "cure homosexuality" at devastating psychological costs. The funding has received little attention prior to the recent controversy.

Campus Pride believes that increased press coverage will only ignite further efforts to end the fast food chain operations on college campuses. Windmeyer reiterates that Campus Pride is "committed to help campuses end food service contracts with Chick-Fil-A" and this August will be sending a letter against Chick-Fil-A to the college presidents of the nearly 400+ colleges and universities that participate annually in the Campus Pride national LGBT-friendly college fair program and its Campus Pride Index online benchmarking tool to create safer, more welcoming campus communities.

“Chick-Fil-A’s logo is now a symbol of hate because of the company’s outward, unapologetic funding of documented hate groups like the Family Research Council. No college or university wants to be associated with hate.”

2012 Olympic Watch-Gabby's History Making Golden Moment

When the 'Magnificent Seven' were on their way to winning the women's team gymnastics gold medal during the 1996 Atlanta Games, one of the members of that gold medal winning squad was Dominique Dawes who four years later at Sydney won bronze.

Dawes became the first African-American gymnast to win a Summer Games gold medal and in the process became a role model and an inspiration to a generation of African-American girls who dreamed of gymnastics glory similar to what she'd experienced.

One of the girls she inspired to dream and reach for Olympic greatness was one from Virgina Beach,.VA named Gabrielle Douglas.

In order to pursue that dream, she moved away from home at age 14 to train in West Des Moines, IA under 2008 Olympic silver medalist Shawn Johnson's coach Liang Chow.   She came close to quitting during one low point in her journey that her sister Arielle talked her out of doing.

It's a good thing she did.  Two years later Gabby's Olympic gymnastics dreams have become a reality during this one magical week in London.

One part of that dream came true in her leading the 2012 gold medal winning USA women's gymnastics team that will forever be known as the 'Fab Five' that won the team title Tuesday by a remarkable five point margin.

The Fab Five lived up to the pre-Olympic hype and beat the Sports Illustrated cover jinx as well as their competition with a 183.596 score while Russia finished second with a 178.503.

Gabby then proceeded to handle her all around competition business Thursday at the North Greenwich Arena.   She beat out her Russian competitors Victoria Komova and her teammate Aliya Mustafina who took the silver and bronze medals.

www.miamiherald.com/2012/08/03/2928618/gabby-douglas-wins-gymnastics.html#storylink=cpy
With the golden win Gabby made history.   She became not only the first African-American gymnast to win the Olympic all around gold medal, she became the first American gymnast ever to win both the team and all around gold medals in the same Olympic games.     .

Her name joins Mary Lou Retton (1984), Carly Patterson (2004) and Nastia Liukin (2008) as USA Olympic all around champions.
.
And somewhere in this nation of ours a little African-American girl watched this event like she did back in 1996 and is now thinking about replicating what Gabby Douglas did today at a future Olympic games.

I sure hope so.

2012 Olympic Watch-USA Women's Vollyballers Beat China

The number one world ranked USA women's volleyball team has embarked on a mission in which no USA women's Olympic volleyball team has gone before:  Getting to the top step of the medal podium.

Team USA clinched a spot in the quarterfinals after beating number 3 world ranked China in Group B play in straight sets 26-24, 25-16, 31-29. in a battle of Group B unbeaten teams.

Destinee Hooker did much of the damage scoring 22 points wit Megan Hodge added 18 points to help them go to 3-0 in pool play with matches remaining against 0-3 Serbia on August 3 and 1-2 Turkey on August 5.

If Team USA wins their remaining two matches, they would finish at the top of the group and would face the number 4 team from Group A in their opening knockout quarterfinal match..

Shame On You, National Bar Association

In 1925, because of Jim Crow segregation, African-American attorneys such as George H. Woodson, S. Joe Brown, James B. Morris, Charles P. Howard, and Gertrude E. Rush were denied admission to the American Bar Association because of their race.  So in the spirit of those times, when they were denied a seat at the table, they built their own table.

A group of 120 attorneys included legendary ones such as Charles Houston founded the National Bar Association in Des Moines, IA at a time when there were a little more than 1,000 African-American lawyers in the United States.

The NBA, working in tandem with the NAACP addressed issues such as professional ethics, legal education, and uniform state laws, as well as questions concerning the civil rights movement in transportation discrimination, residential segregation, and voting rights in addition to working to diversify the federal judiciary and block federal judicial appointments of persons hostile to African-American civil rights and voting rights.

One of the NBA successes in that front was helping block the appointment of controversial North Carolina judge John J. Parker by President Herbert Hoover to the U.S. Supreme Court because of his outspoken opposition to civil rights and voting rights for African-Americans. .

The ABA began admitting African-American members to its ranks starting in 1943, but the NBA continued growing to become the nation's oldest and largest association of Black lawyers, judges, law students and educators and has over 10,000 members in 84 chapters around the world in the United States, Canada, .the United Kingdom, the Caribbean and several African nations.

The NBA constitution states its objective is to "promote legislation that will improve the economic condition of all American citizens regardless of race, sex, or creed."

With that kind of progressive vision and history grounded in our African-American civil rights movement, you would think that the National Bar Association would have no problem adding TBLG specific language in its constitution.

Um yeah, seems like they do.  The Civil Rights Law section of the National Bar Association recently proposed an amendment to the NBA constitution that would add five words to the document: "disability, sexual orientation or gender identity." Nothing more. Nothing less.

And what was the result of the NBA vote?   They overwhelmingly rejected the proposed amendment on a 120-30 vote.

"The National Bar Association's decision not to include disability, sexual orientation or gender identity as part of their nondiscrimination policy fails to accurately reflect the membership it purports to represent and discourages potential members from joining," said Kylar Broadus, attorney and founder of the Trans People of Color Coalition.

"For an organization that was formed as a harbor for Black Americans due to the pervasive discrimination in society at the time and is still a support for many given the structural and systematic discrimination that exist, I would think the NBA would be in tune and open to other Black marginalized groups as well. If we aren't included in the policy, it is clear we aren't welcome."

"How can an organization claiming to advocate on behalf of all Americans and cultivate strong legal leaders, refuse to acknowledge an entire segment of the Black community and its constituency?" asks Sharon Lettman-Hicks, Executive Director and CEO of the National Black Justice Coalition, a civil rights organization dedicated to empowering Black LGBT people. "Black LGBT lawyers and judges are Black, too. Period. We've had several Black LGBT attorneys share with NBJC that they've never felt welcomed at NBA - now we see why."

Of course the defensive spin quickly came in a written statement from the NBA President John Page when asked to comment by EBONY.com on the organization's decision not to include LGBT-specific language in its constitution.

"For nearly 90 years, the NBA has been a leader in the fight for civil rights and justice for all.".said National Bar Association President John Page. "Like most other legal and civil rights organizations, we decided that our mission statement was not the appropriate document to express our unquestioned support of specific minority communities but as professionals and as lawyers we have a clear focus on access, rights, equality, justice and jurisprudence."

Oh really?   Then explain why your organization shrank from this leadership test President Page. It's interesting to note this inclusive language from association of other attorneys such as the American Bar Association:

"The ABA is dedicated to equal employment opportunity for its workforce that is without regard to race, color, sex, national origin, age, religion, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation or other protected characteristics."

And here's what the National Black Law Students Association, an active partner group with the NBA that was founded in 1968 has explicitly stated in their bylaws nondiscrimination clause:

"NBLSA will not discriminate against an individual or group on the basis of sex, race, religion, ethnic group, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, national origin, or country of abode."

Hmm.  Sharon Lettman-Hicks told it like it T-I-S is in the EBONY.com article chronicling the failure of the NBA to include Black LGBT lawyers.

"NBLSA is a grooming ground for future Black lawyers," continues Lettman-Hicks. "These young people are light years ahead of the historic organization, NBA."

The National Bar Association states it has a mission to "protect civil and political rights of the citizens and the residents of the United States."

I must point out to you NBA, some of those United States citizens you need to protect the civil and human rights of also happen to be LGBT ones.   It's past time you dealt with that reality because we can and could definitely use your expertise in doing so right now..

Just as the NBA was founded in the last century to give African-Americans in the legal profession a seat at the table that was denied to them, it's time for you to pull up some chairs to the table you built and allow your fellow African descended brothers and sister attorneys to not only sit there, but welcome them into the fold.

Shame on you, National Bar Association for sending the message through that problematic vote that has the whiff of homophobia and transphobia that you don't wish to do so and LGBT attorneys aren't welcome..

2012 Olympics Watch-Mixed News Day For The Williams Sisters

Yesterday in the Olympic tennis tournament being played at the All England Club was a mixed bag news day for my favorite tennis playing siblings.

Venus was in a third round match with Germany's Angelique Kerber, but had a bad day and it cost her as she lost 6-7(5-7),6-7(5-7) to end her chance to win the London singles gold medal   .

Big Sis had a 5-4 lead in the first set against Kerber with triple set point but failed to convert them and ended up in a tiebreaker.  She had a 5-1 lead at one point in the first set tiebreaker but lost six consecutive points to lose the tiebreaker and the first set.  .

Venus regrouped and charged out to a 3-1 second set lead but Kerber charged back to eventually force another tiebreaker and win the match.   Venus' usually reliable serve took a vacation at the wrong time as well double faulting twice in the second tie breaker to set Kerber up with match point..

“I made a few errors and she hit a few winners, and things can go quickly in tennis,” Williams said.

Her quest for a fourth tennis gold medal is still alive because she and Little Sis are still in the mix for a repeat doubles title.

Speaking of fourth seeded Little Sis, she had a better day.  The roof was closed on Centre Court and that was bad news for her opponent, Russia's Vera Zvonareva.  Serena took only 51 minutes to execute a dominating 6-0, 6-1 win in which she unleashed 12 aces on Zvonareva and hit 32 winners to move to the quarterfinals.

Serena faces eight seeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark later today and then teams with Big Sis to play a doubles quarterfinal match with the number 2 ranked Italian duo of Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci.

TransGriot Update: Serena knocked off Caroline Wozniacki 6-0,6-3 to get to the semifinals against Victoria Azarenka of Belarus

Countdown To Trans Faith In Color Conference 2012

With the turning of another calendar page of this rapidly moving year to August, that means the countdown has begun to one of the two major national events that are on my schedule for this month.

First up is the 2012 edition of the TransFaith In Color Conference in Charlotte, NC August 17-19 at the Hilton University Place in which yours truly will have the honor and pleasure of being the keynote speaker for this event.

My keynote speech will happen on August 18, and I'm looking forward to finally getting the opportunity to attend this conference and meet some of my peeps in the Tarheel State and surrounding area.

Still working on my speech and if you perused examples of some of my previous ones I've posted to this blog, you'll notice I have a tendency to not be shy about speaking my mind.

Faith and the transgender community is a subject that is near and dear to my heart and it'll be a wonderful opportunity to get a chance to discuss that topic.

See y'all in a few weeks Trans Faith in Color Conference

Dyssonance-Bitter, Sweet & Stout

When I visited the University of Arizona a few months ago was pleasantly surprised to receive a phone call in my room letting me know that Toni had driven down I-10 from Phoenix to hang out with me for a few extremely pleasant hours.

I'm so happy to see she's writing her thought provoking posts at her Dyssonance blog again to the chagrin of her haters, and this one needed to be signal boosted.

It's called 'Strong Drink-Bitter, Sweet & Stout', and here's a taste of it (pun intended).

This line in the sand is one ingredient, however, in the stuff that I promote.  First, there are rights.  Concomitant with all the rest, and underlying the efforts for all the rest, one must keep in mind that all people have these rights. That includes the idiots and the fuckwits and the generally crappy people who think that all people shouldn’t have the exact same rights.|

People like Maggie Gallagher. People like Bryan Brown.  People like Orson Scott Card (who’s hit novel is about to become a movie and which funded and will continue to fund efforts to oppress us). People like Cathy Brennan. People like Elizabeth Hungerford. Organizations like the Alliance Defense Fund, the Traditional Values Coalition, Focus on the Family, the American Family Association. Companies like Chick-Fil-A. Religions like the Baptist Conventions and denominations, the Catholic Church, certain sects of Islam. And all the people who support them and their ideas.

All of them firmly believe that all people should not have the exact same rights, and yet, if asked, all of them will naturally say they do believe in such.  The proof is in the pudding, in the way they talk about those things, in the measures of actions, not words.
And all of them have taken actions to ensure that everyone does not have the same exact rights.

Yo Chick-Fil-A, How's That Gaybaiting Working Out For You?

Today all the conservafools will be lining up to eat at their new favorite bigoted restaurant Chick Reicher-Fil-A.   After the Muppets kicked them to the curb over COO and President Dan Cathy's comments, Fox Noise's Mike Huckabee declared today Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day

Dan Cathy said that pro-LGBT culture suffers from a "deprived mind," that marriage equality is "twisted up," and that making marriage equality legal is "inviting God's judgement."

Yeah right.  That's why I'm making the judgment to stop buying Chick-Fil-A sandwiches and waffle fries and taking my fast food business elsewhere.

Mickey D's, Wendy's and Popeye's have chicken sandwiches too.

To counter the newly discovered conservafool love for Reicher-Fil-A a kiss in protest to support same gender marriage and rainbow community human rights is being called for to occur on Friday at Chick-Fil-A restaurants near you.

The Reichers and bigots have been slithering out of their holes to support their new favorite restaurant with the predictable bigotry eruptions and nekulturny commens passing by their lips in the Conservasphere..

Contrary to the lies you're being fed conservafools (pun intended), the anger at Dan Cathy and Reicher-Fil-A is not solely about his comments expressing himself about marriage equality.   It is about the chain's long time financial support toward organizations with an ongoing mission of suppressing and opposing the rainbow community's human rights push.

Chick-fil-A's anti-LGBT stance goes well beyond simply opposing marriage equality. They have given millions of dollars to anti-LGBT organizations, including those that have been designated "hate groups" by the Southern Poverty Law Center, and those that push so-called "ex-gay" therapy, which has been denounced by the mainstream medical and mental health community.

They have supported organizations that are on record saying that being gay should be recriminalized in America. Chick-fil-A also bans gay couples from its "WinShape Retreats" aimed at growing leadership within the company.

That corporate funding of groups who oppress LGBT people is why people are majorly pissed about Cathy's comments and at the corporation.   That's a nice segue into something I was made aware of that is taking place today on the University of Louisville's campus.

A forum will happen at U of L's Red Barn discussing the future of the Chick-Fil-A on campus location from 12:00 noon- to 1 PM EDT  today with President Ramsey and the U of L Provost at the Office for LGBT Services.   The forum is open to students, faculty, alumni and local citizens.
For those of you in the Louisville area who wish to attend that meeting, the Office For LGBT service is located in Room 104 in the Red Barn (The Intersection) on the University of Louisville campus
News is also circulating that Chick-Fil-A's brand approval has been precipitously dropping and the organization has been furiously trying to spin the story of why they are getting hit with this massive dose of negative publicity and mayors such as Vincent Gray of Washington DC slamming them..

They tried to spin the Henson company pulling their toys from Chick-Fil-A kids meas as the 'toys were defective'.  A recent letter that appears to be from the various franchisee owners that seeks to paint the picture they don't share Cathy's agenda has been exposed as a form letter with local details cut and pasted into it.

And yeah, Sarah Palin has jumped into this media cacastorm.   While campaigning for Tea Klux Klan senate candidate Ted Cruz who '(ugh) won the Republican nomination for the US senate seat about to be vacated due to Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson's retirement (R-TX), she and Todd showed up at a Chick-Fil-A store in The Woodlands

So Chick-Fil-A, how that gaybaiting working out for you?

Trans Victories In Illinois And Alaska!

The trans wins just keep on coming , with one of them being from a surprising place.

Trans folks living in the Land of Lincoln can now change the gender markers on their birth certificates without having to go through genital surgery

There is still a requirement for a type of surgery to be performed but the specifics of that surgery are left up to the individual’s physician, according to Melaney Arnold, Public Health Communications for the Illinois Department of Public Health.

“The vital records code now requires a licensed physician to appropriately complete the affidavit, attesting that the applicant has undergone an operation, by reason of that operation the gender should be changed on their birth record,” said Arnold.

Gender changing operations that would potentially fit this criteria would include a double mastectomy, hysterectomy, orchiectomy, or facial feminization surgery.

This is a major step forward for trans people who cannot afford the cost of genital reassignment surgery, are worried about the results or feel they don't  need to undergo such procedures.

The other win was in surprise surprise, Alaska

In the wake of an Alaskan superior court ruling that stated that the Alaska Department Of Motor Vehicle requiring proof of genital surgery before it would change the gender marker on a license was an invasion of privacy and unconstitutional, the Alaska DMV got busy writing new regulations to a comply with the ruling.

The new regulations was approved by the lieutenant governor on July 30 after a 30 day comment period and will take effect August 11.

Residents wanting to change their physical description, including sex identifiers must submit certification from a licensed physician, social worker, psychologist, professional counselor, physicians assistant or certified nurse practitioner.

In the certification paperwork the provider must certify that the individual has been undergoing treatment and that the change is expected to be permanent.   The Alaska DMV will accept, but not require documentation to change other physical descriptors such as height, weight or eye color.

This is great news and will help make our lives a little easier in these two states in terms of having idenitfication documents that match our current gender presentations.
