Justice For Shelley Hilliard-Killer Sentenced

Here's an update in the Shelley Hilliard murder case. 

30 year old Qasim Raqib, the killer of transwoman Michele 'Shelley' Hilliard was arrested back in December and charged with her murder.   Raqib pleaded guilty back on March 7 to second degree murder charges.  

He was sentenced on March 26 by Judge Bruce Morrow to serve 25-40 years in jail for the brutal killing in which he dismembered and burned 19 year old Hilliard's body on Detroit's East side.

The sentence won't bring Shelley back, but at least this waste of DNA will be rotting in jail for it.

Shut Up Fool Awards- Good Friday Edition

It's Holy Week, and today is Good Friday as we Christians around the world commemorate the series of events that lead up to Jesus Christ's crucifixion and eventual resurrection on Easter Sunday.

In addition to the Holy Week activities, we also have the Masters going on in Augusta, GA and the opening of the 2012 major League baseball season.   It's a bittersweet one for Astros fans because it's not only the 50th anniversary year of the founding of the club, it's the Astros last season in the National League.

Since it's Friday, that also means it's time for me to let y'all know what fool, fool or group of fools distinguished themselves and earned the TransGriot Shut Up Fool award.

And as always, we had plenty of competition for it.   Group awards to the Republican Party, the radfems and Fox Noise, and the Zimmerman legal team for starters.  In the mix for it this week are GOP chair Reince Priebus, Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Karl Rove, Rep Paul Ryan (R-WI), Gov. Scott Walker (R-WI), Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, Robert Zimmerman, and Piers Morgan.    

This week's Shut up Fool award goes to Donald Trump.   He's in the middle of a transphobic controversy due to a trans contestant unfairly being booted from the Miss Canada Universe pageant no thanks to a rule he ignorantly instituted in 2001 as owner of the Miss Universe pageant system.   

After reversing the initial phobic decision by Canadian pageant officials and allowing Jenna Talackova to compete, he then says in the wake of the press conference she and Gloria Allred held,  "I did not know that she had a lawyer and especially Gloria Allred,” Trump said. “In fact, had I known it was Gloria Allred, I probably would not have reversed my decision because, you know, Gloria is easy to beat.”

He also says in reaction to Allred's comment that no one asked him drop his pants to prove his gender that Allred would be in his words she would be impressed with his genitalia.


“I think that Gloria would be very, very, very impressed with [my penis],” Trump told TMZ’s Harvey Levin. “I think she would have a whole brand new image of Donald Trump.”

Maybe we should ask Ivana about that.  But the image we do have of you is not very flattering to begin with.

Toby's Act Reintroduced For Fourth Time

I've been writing posts about NDP MPP Cheri Di Novo's attempts since 2007 to cover trans people's human rights in Ontario by adding gender identity and expression to the Ontario Human Rights Code via Toby's Act. 

It was named for Toby Dancer, a music producer and trans parishioner of DiNovo's who committed suicide a few years ago.  She has attempted three times to get this passed but it either has languished in the Ontario Legislature or has died due to the Legislature being dissolved for provincial elections..   

On February 21 DiNovo introduced Toby's Act at Queen's Park with members of the Trans Lobby Group in the house to observe what they and MPP DiNovo hope will be a successful effort to pass it this time.   It has support not only from the NDP, but Liberal MPP Yasir Naqvi and Progressive Conservative MPP Christine Elliott are also co-sponsors of Toby's Act.

"As a tri-party sponsored bill, it really has a good chance of success," DiNovo says in an Xtra interview.. "What I am hoping is it takes a much more direct method. The government can bring it in after first reading. Maybe they just need a nudge. So we are appealing to the premier and appealing to the cabinet to do the right thing and move on this."
 
Especially in light of the September 2011 case of blatant trans discrimination that blew up at the Trail's End Market in London, ON that garnered international attention and the recent Talackova case that highlights the need for Canadian trans citizens human rights to be protected..

If the federal government is going to be slow to act in terms of protecting the rights of Canadian trans citizens, then the provincial legislatures need to step up and act where the Conservative majority federal government won't.

Here's hoping that Toby's Act finally passes in Ontario and my trans cousins long wait for coverage under the Ontario Human Rights Code ends this year.

Arrests Made In The Murder Of Agnes Torres Hernandez

Was happy to hear that arrests have been made in the case of murdered Mexican trans activist Agnes Torres Hernandez.

According to xQsi Magazine blog Luis Fernando Bravo, Agustín Flores,  Marco Antonio Especie, and Agnes’ most recent partner Jorge Flores have all been arrested and charged by the Puebla state attorney general with her murder.  A fifth suspect that is believed to be a minor has yet to be named.

xQsi Magazine in the same post had information about Agnes Torres Sulca, another Mexican trans activist based in the Yucatan area who was murdered March 10.  Based on information gathered by authorities investigating her killing, 18 year old Luis Fernando Bueno Mazzoco was arrested in Merida.  He confirmed his participation in the murder of Torres Sulca which has also drawn international outrage and condemnation.

Here's hoping the Mexican justice system gives these perpetrators the punishment they all deserve for taking the lives of these courageous women.

All Time Record Traffic Days At TransGriot

I know I have a lot of people who read this blog on a regular basis, but if you did so on Tuesday, you helped me break my one day record for the most hits I've ever received in one day.

In conjunction with the post I wrote about the late feminist poet Adrienne Rich's transphobia, I had 9678 peeps surfing over on April 3 to check it out.

That obliterated the 8561 people I had checking out an August 27, 2009 post I wrote about Tenika Watson  in the wake of Teddy Pendergrass' January 2010 death which was my previous one day record.  .
The 7933 people I had surfing over to TransGriot on Wednesday is my third highest all time day in terms of one day traffic as well. 

So thank you for coming over to read TransGriot and taking the time out of your busy day to read those posts and some of the over 5000 posts I have written on other subjects as well.   It's deeply appreciated.

Today's troll nuking target is Fred Labow, who tried to post this comment on a March 2009 post I'd written about Brittney Griner that my spam filter caught mere hours after I wrote a post blasting people who are misgendering her

Brittney Griner is a guy and shouldnt be allowed to play womens sports, You can pretend if you want to, be P.C. if you want, BUT this is a MAN, NOT A GIRL!!!!!

And you Fred can pretend to be a human being but you're still a transphobic bigot.

Obviously to everybody except you, Brittney Griner presents as and is female.  She has had no problem or issue with the NCAA competing in the women's ranks for the last three years and when she was slam dunking her way through the Texas girls high school ranks didn't have any problems with the UIL, the governing body of Texas high sports either.  

I'm also looking forward to seeing Brittney help lead Team USA to a fifth consecutive women's basketball gold medal when the London Olympic Games commence in a few months.

And oh BTW, the International Olympic Committee and the NCAA allow transwomen to compete in women's sports.

What, you jealous because your pitifully inadequate self can't measure up to Brittney not only in tems of her off the charts basketball prowess, but being a wonderful fun loving human being as well?    You mad because she  and her Baylor teammates beat one of your fave schools?  

Waah, my bleeding liberal heart has zero sympathy for you, especially when you're disrespecting one of my Houston homegirls.

This is also another example of the 'unwoman' meme being deployed against African-American women by the vanillacentric culture, the bigoted, and the conservaignorant..

As I have said before, who died and made you a member of the Femininity Police?   Brittney is not trans and can't help the fact she's 6'8".  She's dealing with it and evolving into the type of woman she wants to project to the world.   She just happens to also have mad basketball skills that are redefining how the women's game is played.  

If you don't like that, too damned bad. 

I've already wasted enough bandwith on your ignorance, now it's time for the troll nuke to do its work
