A Proud Transsexual Under The Transgender Umbrella

TransGriot Note: Guest post from Dainna Cicotello.   She's an author, lecturer and one of our trans community builders and leaders in Colorado and nationally who mentored me and many of my generation of trans leaders.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, I was personally involved in many discussions that created the modern definition of the word “transgender”. I know exactly why twenty or so of us at one particular conference, specifically chose and agreed on that word, and those definitions, why that word and those definitions were carried back to individual cities and states all across America by trans-activists, why that word and those definitions were written into corporate policy and laws at every level, and why that word and the now historical definitions still have vital importance today and into the future.

Many cities in that era still had anti-cross-dressing laws. You could be put into jail simply for being out in public wearing clothing not associated with your apparent birth sex. You could be denied employment, housing, bank services, even access to public bathrooms, simply for not wearing clothing associated with your apparent birth sex. You would be fired because someone saw you dressed in clothing not appropriate based on apparent birth sex. You would be openly refused a job… You would be arrested, jailed, turned over to a mental institution, subjected to electroshock “therapy”, etc., all because someone saw you in public, in a gender role different from that based on assumptions about your apparent birth sex.

It is crucial to understand that TG/TS is the ONLY human condition which is self defined.  A person is transsexual ONLY because they say they are. What a person chooses to do with that self definition, is then controlled by the individual’s personal life circumstances.

The social, legal, judicial, and psychological systems has no way to understand, nor to care about nor to care for, all of these nuances about people who chose to appear in public in a gender role which varied from expectations; and therefore no way to respond to gender variant people. Social, legal, judicial and mental health systems cannot function in a world of nuance and variation. Everything must have a precise definition.

And so twenty of us gathered in a room, over a period of several nights, to create a precise enough definition that we could work with to change the social, legal/judicial, psychological and workplace environment, to make the world safe enough for ourselves and others like us, that people like us could explore and confirm what life role, what gender role, was best for each of us to function within.

To the transsexual separatists – the transgender community as a whole, has worked very long and very hard to make the world safe for you today.  Many of us have given everything, all of our time, all of our efforts, lost our families and friends, spent almost all of our money, to doing this work over the past two decades. You leave this safety net we have created for you at your own peril.

Those who choose to run away from the umbrella term of Transgender, cannot ever complain when the world rains on their parade.

Recall Scott Walker Effort Passes 300K Signatures

In just a mere 12 days the effort to recall conservafool Wisconsin governor Scott Walker (R) has gathered an astounding 301,000 signatures.   They are well on their way to the 540,000 verified signatures they need to trigger the recall election.

As much woof ticket selling that Scott Walker, the Wisconsin  GOP, the national Republicans an d their FOX Noise propaganda ministry have tried to pimp in discounting the recall movement as 'sour grapes', it's interesting to note for somebody that isn't worried about it, the $2 million he's spent in ads trying to defend his union busting job performance say otherwise.

The United Wisconsin proponents have until January 17 to gather those 540,000 signatures, then once they are verified, the election can take place and the Democrats will probably announce their candidate to oppose walker in the recall election.

Look for the GOP to dig deep into their political dirty trick playbook to try to come up with ways to slow the runaway freight train momentum building toward what is increasingly looking like a wildly successful effort to gather enough signatures to force that historic recall election in Wisconsin

Proposed Nova Scotia Name Change Bill Has Controversial Provision

The province of Nova Scotia introduced a name change bill that has a provision in it that is drawing criticism from not only transgender people but victims of stalkers.

The proposed bill would require that anyone requesting a legal name change except people getting them via marriage or children submit fingerprints for a mandatory criminal background check.

British Columbia, Alberta, and Manitoba have legislation on their legal books similar to the one that Nova Scotia is trying to pass, while provinces such as Ontario allow name changes without mandatory fingerprinting.

Nova Scotia's Justice Minister Ross Landry said the Identification of Criminals Act is intended to help police track people with criminal records who want to change their names to hide their past.  He claimed that once the criminal checks are completed and name change applicants cleared, police will be required to destroy the fingerprints.   .

During a recent committee hearing for the bill MLA's got an earful from transgender people and their advocates opposing the bill.   They felt it was a violation of their rights and would stigmatize them just for getting a name chane that is a crucial part of us moving on and living lives in our correct gender.

A name change is one way of alleviating the anxiety and stress of being "regularly outed as trans," local activist Kaley Kennedy told the committee.

For many people who can’t afford to undergo a sex-change operation or treatments, a legal name change is one of the only "affordable options available for them," Kennedy said.

And we shouldn't have to go through the dehumanizing stigma of being fingerprinted just to have our names match our gender presentation either.

2011 Texans Watch-Survivor Jacksonville

The AFC South division battle with the Jacksonville Jaguars was already going to be tough enough with Matt Schaub out for the season.

But moments after Leinart tossed his first TD pass as a starter since 2007 to TE Joel Dreesen that staked the Texans to a 17-7 lead he suffered a broken collarbone that will require season ending surgery.

Off the bench comes rookie QB T.J.Yates to manage the game as the Texans went conservative in their play calling to ensure that Yates didn't get hurt and they would have to go to emergency quarterback Owen Daniels.

Thanks to the NFL's number one defense they held Jacksonville to 255 total yards of offense as the Texans sacked Jag quarterbacks seven times.

Connor Barwin did much of the damage by getting a team record four sacks and ensure they escaped EverBank Stadium surviving this latest bout of adversity.

The Texans defensive performance in this game helped carry them to a 20-13 victory, keep them unbeaten in the AFC South at 4-0 with division games left against Indy and the Traitors, extend their team record winning streak to five games and keep their hopes alive for home field advantage throughout the entire AFC side of the playoff bracket.

And we also witnessed Jack Del Rio's last game as the head coach of the Jaguars, who was fired this morning. He was already under a 'playoffs or else' ultimatum from Jacksonville Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver to keep his job, and the loss eliminated the Jags from playoff contention.   .

Speaking of playoffs, the question remains whether the Texans will have enough healthy players left to form a playoff roster when they get there much less a quarterback capable of taking them to a Super Bowl?

My favorite NFL ballers are  maintaining a two game lead in the AFC South with a 8-3 record.  But they'll definitely need a lot more than the 20 points they generated last Sunday.   T.J.Yates will get his first NFL start as the Texans face the Atlanta Falcons at Reliant Stadium this Sunday.

But if the defense keeps playing at this level, maybe not.

Lois Bates Wake And Homegoing Ceremony

I mentioned that Chicago's Lois Bates, one of the African-American trans community's builders and pioneers passed away on November 17 just three days before the TDOR.

Thanks to Rod 2.0 found out that her homegoing ceremony was held at 11 AM CST yesterday at Galting's Chapel on 10133 S. Halsted in Chicago. The wake was held on Sunday, November 27 at Pillar of Love Fellowship UCC.

She's had some health challenges over the last few years, but that still didn't stop her from serving the local community.   She will be missed by those who knew and loved her in the Chicago area and in the national African American trans community.

Rest sis.  You've earned it

TBLG Rights Ads From Argentina

South American nations are making enormous strides in passing rainbow community friendly human rights legislation.   Argentina is working on one that will make it easier for transpeople in their nation to get identity documents that match their gender presentation.

But prejudice, violence and bigotry aimed at transpeople still remain a problem.

This Spanish language ads from Argentina are courtesy of Blabbeando and subtitled.

They also remind people that all are equal before the law, including TBLG people.

The Candidates From The GOP

Time for another TransGriot Song rewrite.   This one was born during one of the GOP debates.  I was on Twitter and tweeting sarcastic remarks about the breathtaking ignorance being displayed by the pack of GOP presidential candidates and a song was born.

The Candidates From The GOP
Sung to the tune of 'Wonderful World' by Sam Cooke

Don't know much about history
Don't know much biology
They don't care about a science book
Or a middle class pocketbook

But I know I can't vote for you
Y'all think corporations are people too
The candidates from the GOP

Don't know much about geography
They hate on minorities
Don't care much about the rule of law
Don't know what the government is for

You think a zygote is a person, too
Ain't no way I'm gonna vote for you
The candidates from the GOP

Now you brag about not being "A" students
But that's important to me
Because unless you're an "A" student baby
Can't get the presidency

Don't know much about history
Don't know much biology
They don't care about a science book
Or a middle class pocketbook

But I know I can't vote for you
Think corporations are people too
The candidates from the GOP

La ta ta ta ta ta ta
(History)
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
(Biology)
La ta ta ta ta ta ta
(Science book)
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
(pocketbook)

But I know I can't vote for you
Think corporations are people too
The candidates from the GOP

Italian Actor To Become An Actress

I keep making the point that not only are we ethnically diverse transpeople everywhere on the planet and in every profession, we are part of the diverse mosaic of human life.

The latest example of this is coming from Italy in the person of 30 year old actor Guiseppe Schisano.

Schisano announced in a recent press conference that he is about to undergo a gender transition and when she comes out on the other side of it will take the feminine name Vittoria.

Schiasano noted during the press conference feeling "a strong feminine side that was hidden for years".  When he went to the doctor to do his initial baseline blood work to assess hormone levels, there was an interesting surprise.

"When I went to the doctor to start the hormone therapy that precedes the operation, the doctor was surprised that I wasn't already taking the hormones. My levels showed that my female hormones were higher than my male ones," Schisano said.

Not surprising to me.  Had the same issue going on when I did my initial blood work in preparation to begin HRT.

It will be interesting to watch Vittoria's evolution into her outside body as currently configured matching the person on the inside and wish her the best of luck in her feminine journey..

'The Purple One' Isn't Running In 2012

Next to me ripping the GOP on a regular basis here at TransGriot, the person who is next in line that I have frequently called out on more than a few occasions when he deserved it has been Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA)

I and many people in the trans community have cursed  'The Purple One' for our major differences in the speed of passage of federal human rights laws for transgender people that came to a head in October 2007 when he stripped us out of an ENDA bill that eventually got passed by the House but went nowhere in the Senate.

However, as much as I have chewed on 'the Purple One' in these electronic pages for being a legislative impediment for trans human rights issues, I also have to note that he also hired a transman on his staff

And differences in trans policy aside, The Purple One and I do have similar stances on a few liberal-progressive issues.

I also love the fact that Rep. Frank ain't scared to call out the conservafools for being the lying, informationally challenged doofuses they are on their own propaganda network.   That tell it like it T-I-S style also applied to constituents too.

So I was stunned to flip the TV on to MSNBC this morning right in the middle of his press conference announcing that he is retiring and will not be running for a 17th term in 2012.   Massachusetts lost a congressional seat in the latest round of redistricting and Frank noted it was a factor in his decision along with his desire not to be in politics past his 75th birthday.

He was the first congressmember to come out while in office, and rose to become a liberal icon and one of the more powerful Democrats on the Hill.   He has since been followed to Capitol Hill by Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) who is now running to become the first openly gay US senator and Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO).

President Obama had this to say about the retirement of Rep. Frank:

"This country has never had a Congressman like Barney Frank, and the House of Representatives will not be the same without him. For over 30 years, Barney has been a fierce advocate for the people of Massachusetts and Americans everywhere who needed a voice. He has worked tirelessly on behalf of families and businesses and helped make housing more affordable. He has stood up for the rights of LGBT Americans and fought to end discrimination against them. And it is only thanks to his leadership that we were able to pass the most sweeping financial reform in history designed to protect consumers and prevent the kind of excessive risk-taking that led to the financial crisis from ever happening again. Barney’s passion and his quick wit will be missed in the halls of Congress, and Michelle and I join the people of the Bay State in thanking him for his years of service."

When the 113th Congress cranks up for business on January 3, 2013, for the first time in 32 years Rep Barney Frank will not be in the House chambers as a part of it.
