Countdown To FIFA Women's World Cup 2015

Photo: FIFA and the National Organizing Committee have unveiled the Official Slogan for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015: TO A GREATER GOAL. Which country is YOUR 'favourite' for next year's competition? http://fifa.to/1p1sAPH
If you thought that the World Cup wasn't going to happen until 2018 in Russia, think again.   There will be FIFA World Cup action happening next summer, and it'll be right next door to us in Canada.

The seventh edition of the FIFA Women's World Cup will happen June 6-July 5 with an expanded field of 24 nations for the first time playing in the cities of Vancouver, Edmonton, Montreal, Moncton, Winnipeg, and Ottawa.   The title game is set to be played at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver.

FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™ unveils official mascot The Women's World Cup Draw to set the groups will take place on December 6 in Ottawa and as of this writing, besides the host nation of Canada, six have qualified so far including defending world champions Japan, China, South Korea, Australia and first timers Thailand and Switzerland.

One team you won't see is North Korea, who is banned for this tournament for having several players test positive during the 2011 World Cup edition in Germany for banned substances.

The official mascot for this upcoming Women's World Cup has already been unveiled, and she is the female great white owl named Shuéme

If you're wondering if FIFA world number one ranked and 2011 runners up Team USA has qualified yet, the CONCACAF Qualifying Tournament to determine three of the World Cup spots assigned to our federation isn't happening until October 14-26 somewhere here in the USA.  The fourth place CONCACAF team will have to fight a CONMEBOL (South America) third place finisher in a playoff for another World Cup spot.

Team USA has had a turbulent year.  It has been 15 years since they captured their last world championship with the dramatic Rose Bowl penalty kick shootout win over with China.   But Team USA finished a shocking seventh in the Algarve Cup tournament with zero wins.   After the worst ever finish in the Algarve Cup tournament, the Stars and Stripes (need to come up with a cooler nickname) knocked off China's Steel Roses, then fired coach Tom Sermanni and replaced him with assistant Jill Ellis.

While Team USA is deep, the question remains whether Ellis will have enough time to fashion Team USA into the dominating unit we all know and love that rolled though CONCACAF Olympic qualification by a cumulative score of 38-0 in 2012

And yes, the host Canadians will be looking for payback next summer after being knocked out of the Olympic semifinals (they assert they were robbed) by Team USA.  They are also pissed that striker Sydney Leroux, one of the best north of the border players since Christine Sinclair, decided to play for Team USA.

Hey Canada (and Renee), don't hate because we got it like that. I'm glad sistah Sydney (yep, she's Black) is playing for my team.

But like Canada, the rest of the world is catching up to our FIFA world number one ranked USA squad . The Germans have won two titles.  The French are a threat along with defending champion Japan and Pia Sundhage coached Sweden. And the Brazilians with Marta are always dangerous.

As far as the rest of the women's football world is concerned, the race is on to punch their tickets to Canada.  The CAF (Africa) will determine their three spots at a qualifying tournament to be held in Namibia October 11-25 while the 2014 South American Women's Football Championship will be held in Ecuador September 11-28 to determine two of the CONMEBOL spots.   UEFA (Europe) is still sorting out who will represent them and take their remaining seven spots, while New Zealand barring a monumental upset is probably going to get Oceania's lone tournament slot.

So we still have a few months left before we know which teams will be playing in Canada next summer and which groups they will be competing in with the ultimate goal of being in Vancouver to hoist that trophy.   The only team that does know their group are the host Canadians, and they will be per FIFA tradition in Group A.

The answers to the rest of the Women's World Cup related questions we'll discover by the end of the year..

2014 Williams Watch-Out Of The Wimbledon Ladies Singles

Serena Williams of the U.S. hits a return during her women's singles tennis match against Anna Tatishvili of the U.S. at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, in London June 24, 2014. REUTERS/Suzanne PlunkettIt's the third round of Wimbledon, and up until this point my tennis playing sibling were looking good headed into this weekend's play at the All England club.

Serena had destroyed Chanelle Scheepers in an astounding 49 minutes (that's not a typo)in the second round  and the number one seed was highly favored to move into the fourth round against 25th seeded Alize Cornet of France.

But after taking only 29 minutes to win the first set 6-1, a rain delay on Court No 1 ensued.   When play resumed, the Serena that has been destroying people inexplicably disappeared and shockingly lost the next two sets to Cornet 3-6, 4-6 to find herself on the Wimbledon sidelines for the second year in a row.

And yeah, as you probably guessed, out comes the predictable Internet peanut gallery racist and transmisogynistic commentary after Serena lost.

UK-TENNIS-WIMBLEDON-VENUS:Venus in for the long haul after advancing to third roundBig Sis had a tougher third round match with former Wimbledon champ and sixth seeded Petra Kvitova.

Venus had been playing well, but exited the singles tournament with a three set 7-5, 6-7 (2-7), 5-7 third round loss.  But she made Kvitova work to eliminate her.

The Williams sisters are still not done in the Wimbledon doubles tournament.   The eighth seeded siblings have a second round doubles match coming against Kristina Barrois and Stefanie Voegele

2014 Williams Watch- Off To A Great Start At 'Williams'-don

Serena Williams of the U.S. hits a return during her women's singles tennis match against Anna Tatishvili of the U.S. at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, in London June 24, 2014. REUTERS/Suzanne PlunkettWhile some of you are watching World Cup 2014 action from Brazil, I also have my eye turned toward the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club to watch my fave tennis playing siblings in their first week of 'Williams'-don action.

Serena served notice to the tennis world that she's  put the disappointment of Paris behind her and wants that sixth Venus Rosewater Dish.

Number one seeded Little Sis took only 61 minutes to blitz fellow American Anna Tatishvili in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.

And blitz was the bet way to describe a match in which Serena blasted 16 aces past her opponent who is ranked 112 spots below her.   She moves on to a second round clash with South African Chanelle Scheepers.

But it's Venus who has been making some noise and news in this edition of Wimbledon.

UK-TENNIS-WIMBLEDON-VENUS:Venus in for the long haul after advancing to third round30th seeded Big Sis started her fortnight in search of her sixth Wimbledon title with a three set 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win over Spain's Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor.    She then after a slow start beat in straight sets Japan's Kurumi Nara 7-6 (7-4) 6-1 to punch her ticket to the third round and a date with sixth seeded Czech Petra Kvitova, who won the 2011 Wimbledon singles title.

It was the first time in 18 months that Venus has reached the third round of a Grand Slam, and we can only hope that she'll be around in the Ladies Singles past this weekend.

The eighth seeded Williams sisters play their first round doubles match at 11 AM CDT today against the duo of Oksana Kalashnikova and Olga Savchuk

TransGriot update: Little Sis blitzed Scheepers 6-0, 6-1 to join Venus in the third round of the Ladies singles tournament.   In their doubles match with Kalashnikova and Savchuk, the Williams sisters advanced after a 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 result.

2014 Williams Watch-'Williams'-don Starts Today

My favorite tennis playing siblings had a forgettable trip to Stade Roland Garros and its clay courts last month as they both exited the 2014 French Open earlier than planned due to second round upsets.

But starting today through July 6 is the Grand Slam tournament at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London which the Williams sisters have so thoroughly dominated it I call it 'Williams'-don.

Serena has won five titles here (2002, 2003, 2009, 2010, 2012) and so has big sis Venus (2000, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2008).  As a matter of fact their domination at Wimbledon is so complete that during the 2000's the only years that someone not named Williams won the women's singles title was in 2004 when Serena was upset in the final by Maria Sharapova and Amelie Mauresmo of France won it in 2006 after defending champ Venus was upset in the third round by Jelena Jankovic.

During that stretch the Williams sisters met in the Wimbledon finals four times in 2002, 2003, 2008 and 2009 with Little Sis taking three of the four matchups.   Serena won her 2002 and 2010 Wimbledon titles without losing a set, and Venus did the same in 2008

And yeah, can't forget to remind the Williams haters of the Olympic gold medal Serena won in the London Games and the London Olympic doubles title she and Big Sis won which was ahem, played at the All England Club.

The grass courts are well suited to their power game, and with Centre Court's retractable roof, when it's closed, they become even more lethal.

But it's the 2014 edition of The Championships, and both are seeking rebounds from the double disappointments in Paris and Serena's shocking fourth round upset loss here last year.

Number one ranked and number one seeded Serena starts the fortnight with an opening round match against fellow American Anna Tatishvili while 30th seeded Venus starts with an opening round match versus Spain's Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor.

The Williams sisters are also entered in the ladies doubles tourney as they seek to capture their first Wimbledon doubles crown since 2012.

And hopefully I'll get to see Serena holding up the Venus (Williams) Rosewater dish on July 6

2014 Williams Watch-Sidelined In Second Round

A punchless Serena Williams is out of the French Open in the second round. (AP Photo/Darko VojinovicAs many of you TransGriot readers are aware of, I've been a little busy with Houston human rights business, but not so much as to not have an eye turned toward Paris, the French Open and see how my fave tennis playing siblings are doing.

In our last Williams siblings update, both sisters easily dispatched their first round opponents.

If they handled their second round tennis playing business and got past their respective second round opponents Garbine Muguruza of Spain and Anna Schmiedlova of Slovakia, a tantalizing and eagerly anticipated third round battle against each other would be their reward.

A third round French Open Sister-Sister matchup that's shockingly not gonna happen.

Clay has always been like Kryptonite to both Williams sisters, and out of all the majors, the red clay courts at Stade Roland Garros have not been kind to them.    And with top seeds falling in this edition of the French Open, the upset bug claimed two more seeds.

Number one seed and defending French Open champ Serena was not on her A game and upset in straight sets by Muguruza 2-6, 2-6 in a error plagued 64 minutes on Court Suzanne Lenglen .

It was earlier in the day on Court Philippe Chatrier, but Venus was also sent packing by Schmiedlova 6-2, 3-6, 4-6.

Big Sis won the first set and was up an early break in the second set before Schmiedlova responded by winning eight of the next nine games and taking control of the match.

And yeah, cue the gleeful racist vitriol in the Internet comment threads aimed at Serena once it ended.   All I have to say to you bigoted haters is 'Williams'-don is coming June 23-July 6.

2014 Williams Watch-On To The Second Round

Serena WilliamsThe 2014 edition of the French Open is underway, and there's good news and bad news for my fave tennis playing siblings at Stade Roland Garros.

The good news is that Big and Little Sis are through to the second round of the women's singles.  Number one seeded Serena took 79 minutes to spank French homegirl Alize Lim 6-2, 6-1 in straight sets and move on to play Spain's Garbine Muguruza.

Number 29 seeded Venus took less time (77 minutes) to beat Belinda Bencic of Switzerland.6-4, 6-1 in straight sets, and will play Anna Schmiedlova of Slovakia in the second round.

Now comes the bad news.  Should both advance to the third round, their next opponents will be each other.

It would be the first time since the 2002 French Open final the Williams sisters have played against each other with Little Sis holding a 14-10 edge in those matchups.

Who fell asleep during the women's singles draw setup last Friday to let that happen?

Serena is playing for the repeat and tying Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova for fourth on the all time Grand Slam titles list, while Venus is playing for her first ever French Open singles title.

Good luck in the second round ladies.

2014 Williams Watch-The French Open Starts

Today starts the 113th edition of the French Open at Stade Roland Garros in Paris through June 8.  The question I will have on my mind along with all international tennis fans is can Serena repeat?

I'd say it's likely after being upset in the Australian Open by Ana Ivanovic, so the French Open field needs to be very afraid after Little Sis warmed up for the French by capturing the Italian Open title which is a clay court tournament.

If Serena manages to win the French Open, she will tie Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova for fourth on the all time titles list at 18 and be only one singles title away from tying Helen Wills Moody who sits in third place.

Number one seeded Serena starts the chase for her third French Open singles title with her first round match against French homegirl Alize Lim.

Big Sis Venus is also playing in this tournament and is unfortunately on the same side of the draw as Little Sis.   She starts her French Open singles play against Belinda Bencic of Switzerland.

As to whether the Williams sisters will be playing doubles in this tournament, won't know until they post the women's doubles draw.

Will this be another successful French business trip for Serena?  Will Venus make some noise in this one?   We'll begin to find out the answers to those questions in a few hours.

Houston Dash Play Inaugural NWSL Match Tonight

It's the day we women's soccer fans have been waiting for ever since we found out in December we would be getting a National Women's Soccer League expansion franchise in Houston.

The Houston Dash will run onto the pitch at BBVA Compass Stadium later tonight for their first ever match against the NWSL champion Portland Thorns FC.  Interest in the game is high enough that the Dash are working on a sellout of the game and have opened up the upper bowl of BBVA Compass for ticket sales..

Their home games are also being broadcast on local television.   The Dash are the second NWSL squad to have a local television deal.

Head Coach Randy Waldrum wants to put an exciting attacking squad on the field, and that has been the case in the Dash's preseason matches.

As the Dash's roster took shape, we ended up with Canadian national team members Lauren Sesselmann (who is hurt right now) and goalkeeper Erin McLeod and Mexican national team member Teresa Noyola via trades, and interestingly enough via the NWSL draft with the second overall pick the sister-in-law of Texans linebacker Brian Cushing in Kealia Ohai

Now the level of competition ramps up from the upper level college teams they played in preseason .  The Dash will get a major measuring test of where they are when they face off against the Thorns, who like themselves are also affiliated with an MLS team..

Houston DashDespite their expansion status, the Dash players have set lofty goals and are aiming to be one of the four teams left standing for the playoffs when their inaugural 24 game NWSL regular season concludes.

They are not only being watched by Houston sports fans, but other teams in MLS who are considering starting their own NWSL affiliated women's teams from scratch like the Dynamo did.with the Dash.

Best of luck in tonight's opener and hope it's a successful debut.

TransGriot Update:  The Dash had a tying goal in stoppage time wiped out by a questionable offsides call and lost 1-0 to the Thorns

Since When Did Transfeminine Athletes Have An Advantage Over Cisfeminine Ones?

Photo: Chloie Jonsson, who is transgendered, is suing CrossFit for the right to compete with other women in the International CrossFit Games. She's also asking for $2.5 million.

Do you think she has a case? Read more: http://bit.ly/1j1Y6XE'The Women’s Sports Foundation supports the right of all athletes, including transgender athletes, to participate in athletic competition that is fair, equitable and respectful to all--Women's Sports Foundation, 2011 'Participation of Transgender Athletes In Women's Sports '
I'm really getting beyond sick and tired of being sick and tired of hearing, along with with my transfeminine athletic sisters around the world this ignorant and repeated far too often bull feces by cis people that transfeminine athletes have an advantage over their cis feminine counterparts.

Been hearing that tired argument since Renée Richards sued the USTA in 1977 for the right to play in the US Open.

Serena Williams of the United States makes a forehand return to Vesna Dolonc of Serbia during their second round match at the Australian Open tennis championship in Melbourne, Australia, Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014.(AP Photo/Aaron Favila)That argument defies logic and is an insult to the competitive abilities of cis feminine athletes to suggest that a trans feminine athlete would instantly dominate whatever cisfeminine sporting ranks they compete in.

I played varsity tennis in high school and still play from time to time.  But there is no way in Hades I can beat a Serena Williams or any professional women's tennis player even on their worst day and I simultaneously crank my game up at that moment to an A++  level.  To suggest I can simply because I showed up on the planet in a masculine body half a century ago and just show up on the court to play them is delusional.

And speaking of
Renée Richards, know how many Grand Slam tournaments she during her pro career? Same as Anna Kournikova. ZERO  Renee Richards had more tennis success as a coach for Martina Navratilova

The 'transfeminine athletes have an advantage over cisfeminine competitors' meme is one that needs to die a swift and painful death.   It is used far too often to exclude trans women from competition and has its roots in the same racist rhetoric that was used to enable discriminating against African-American athletes and justify segregated sports in the Jim Crow era.

Dr.Eric Vilain, director of the Center for Gender-based Biology, and chief of medical genetics in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of California Los Angeles, has long ago debunked the idea that transgender women who have been on hormone replacement therapy for a significant amount of time retain some sort of advantage over their cisgender counterparts:
"Research suggests that androgen deprivation and cross-sex hormone treatment in male-to-female transsexuals reduces muscle mass; accordingly, one year of hormone therapy is an appropriate transitional time before a male-to-female student athlete competes on a women's team."
But yet the ignorance, as evidenced by the recent Wendy Williams show panel and CrossFit's transphobic response to Chloie Jonsson still persists.

This from the general counsel for CrossFit:
"Chloie was born genetically- as a matter of fact- with an X and a Y chromosome and all of the anatomy of a male of the human race... [A] male competitor who has a sex reassignment procedure still has a genetic makeup that confers a physical and physiological advantage over women. We owe it to the competition and the whole pool of female athletes to exclude Chloie from the participating in the female division."
How the hell do you know what Chloie Jonsson's chromosomal makeup is?   Unless you have some special mutant powers we aren't aware of, the only way you can tell someone chromosomal makeup is by genetic testing.

Note to the transphobic and scientifically ignorant.   XX and XY aren't the only sex chromosomal combinations that humans have.  There's XXY,  XXX, XYY, XXXY, XO...

Chloie JonssonBecause of that ignorance, the California based fitness trainer was denied the opportunity to compete in the International CrossFit Games, which seeks to find the fittest men and women on the planet.

Note it didn't say fittest cis men or cis women on the planet.

Jonsson is now suing CrossFit for $2.5 million for violating the state anti-discrimination law that covers trans people.  The case is scheduled to go to court in Santa Cruz, CA in July and it would be wise for CrossFit to settle because other major international sporting organizations, including the International Olympic Committee and the NCAA have clearly defined policies and guidelines concerning trans athletes.

Bottom line is that trans athletes not only want to, but deserve the chance to compete in sports without drama just like anyone else on this planet.   Denying transpeople that opportunity because of your transphobic bigotry and prejudice is not only wrong, but in CrossFit's case may cost them a lot of cash.

Let my trans people play.   Let my trans people compete.  Let my trans people participate in sports without drama.

Moni's 2014 NCAA Women's B-Ball Bracket

2013 UConn Women's National Championship CelebrationSince it's Women's History Month and I do have a lot of women's sports fans who peruse this blog, ever since 2008 I have been posting on TransGriot an NCAA Women's basketball tournament bracket in honor of it.

And frankly, the other reason I do so is to show the women NCAA ballers some love, too.

The road to Nashville begins for 64 teams this Saturday with the Final Four being played April 6-8.  I'm only 3-3 in picking the women's NCAA champs, and you can see my results for 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

But bear in mind TransGriot readers I have picked the women's Final Four teams correctly in 2008, 2009 and 2012.

Prairie View A&M has to be wondering who they pissed off on the NCAA selection committee.  For the third consecutive year, winning the SWAC women's tournament championship gets them an opening round game against the number one overall seed.   In 2012 and 2013 they opened tournament play against Baylor and now they face an unbeaten UConn. In 2011 they opened tournament play against number one regional seeded Baylor.

Last year I picked Baylor to repeat in what was Brittney Griner's senior season but Shoni Schimmel and Louisville had other ideas.

My fellow Taurus (we share the same May 4 birthday) her little sis Jude and her Cardinal teammates merrily bombed away from the three point line and fearlessly drove the lane with attitude against my imposing Houston homegirl Griner as the Cards shocked the basketball world and escaped with an 82-81 upset victory that trashed my bracket and ended Baylor's repeat bid.

The Cardinals rode the wave of that ginormous Sweet 16 upset and the subsequent takedown of number 2 seeded Tennessee all the way to the NCAA title game that UConn won 93-60 to capture their 8th NCAA women's title.

Well, Shoni's back for her senior season along with her little sis and Da Ville.  The Cardinals are not only motivated by that title game thumping, but like the menz are pissed off about their seeding.  They are also playing to get to their home arena the KFC Yum Center.

Defending champs UConn enter this tournament undefeated  (34-0) and the number one overall seed.  UConn is not only determined to repeat and win their 9th NCAA title, this Huskies team wants to join the others in UConn women's b-ball history as the fifth to do so with a zero in the loss column.

Stanford has been an NCAA elite women's basketball powerhouse.  They have made it to eleven Final Fours, were runners up in 2008 and 2010 but unlike UConn and Tennessee only have titles won in 1990 and 1992 to show for it.   My Houston homegirl Chiney Ogwumike wants to change that in her senior season and win a title for the Cardinal in the 21st Century.

The Cardinal also feel along with some women's basketball media pundits they deserved a number one seed in this tournament.

Notre Dame is minus the graduated Skylar Diggins but are still dangerous as their undefeated 32-0 record proved.  The Irish lady ballers romped through their inaugural season in the ACC and also enter this tournament as a number one seed.

The Irish, like Louisville are trying to make it back to their home arena for the Elite Eight round   They not only want to make it to their third NCAA final in the last four years, but this time take the championship trophy home, especially if it's at UConn's expense.

The Irish have beaten UConn seven out of the last nine times they played them, but one of those two losses was to the Huskies in last year's national semifinal game.

Dawn Staley has been quietly building South Carolina into a national power, and was rewarded with the regular season SEC women's title. They were upset in the SEC women's tournament but still earned a number one seed for their 27-4 season long body of work.

Will UConn, the current queens of the NCAA women's hardwoods continue to reign and execute the repeat as an unbeaten squad?  Can the Irish make that trip down I-65 south to cap a perfect season by cutting down the nets in Music City?   Can Louisville also make that short trip down I-65, make it to the final again but this time send Shoni Schimmel out as an NCAA champion?

Or will another women's team on the rise like South Carolina or on a roll like USC crash the Music City party?

We'll see who will be cutting down the nets at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville April 8.
