It may be in the triple digits temperature wise, but that doesn't slow down construction here in H-town. They just make sure the workers get plenty of cold water, rest and keep going until they get the project done.
I'm a big fan and supporter of the expansion of light rail in my hometown. I've been keeping tabs on the progress of METRORail construction on the Southeast, North and East End lines, especially since one of the new lines will terminate not far from where I live now.
It's moving along to the point that the construction crews began laying rail on some of the lines earlier this month that are scheduled to be completed in 2014..
METRO asked for public input on names for the future stations on the various rail lines. The deadline passed in May for that phase of the process, but they are now conducting a survey until August 31 to get further citizen input on some of the contenders for station names on the various routes.
The METRO board will choose the permanent names of the rail stations at their September 2011 meeting.
I've had my say about the Southeast Line and will chime in later on the other two, so I thought I'd make it easy for you Houstonians or homesick ex-pats to chime in and have your say about what names should grace those station platforms.
But to be honest, I'm beyond ready for those station platforms to not only be constructed after they finish laying the track, but for those light rail trains to start running along those tracks when they're done.

My sis Ambalika Williams as part of her internship is compiling a Queer Youth Politics Survey.
But I'll let her tell y'all what it's about.
***
Hello, my name is Ambalika Williams and I'm an intern at Equality Texas as well as a student at the University of Texas at Austin. Currently, Equality Texas is working to make the organization more inclusive to younger people. We recognize that in order to have a successful movement inclusion of young people is vital.
In order to make these changes and build stronger connections with young activist, we would like to know what issues or concerns are facing young Texans. If you are between the ages of 15-25 and are a minority in terms of gender and sexuality please complete this survey. Feel free to email me any questions you might have. Moreover, if you are interested in getting involved with Equality Texas please contact me at ambalika.williams@utexas.edu.
***
If you're between the ages of 15-25 and a resident of the Lone Star State, here's your opportunity to be heard by a large TBLG organization. Please consider taking it and helping her compile the data so they can do a better job of helping you out..

TransOhio Statewide Needs Assessment
TransGriot Note: If you're one of my TransGriot readers living in Ohio, you may wish to fill out this Trans Needs Assessment that TransOhio is compiling.
TransOhio is asking members of the Ohio transgender community to complete a needs assessment.
If you are a member of the Ohio transgender community, please fill out the needs assessment before February 28,.2011.
They wish to have transpersons from or residing in the state of Ohio taking part in this needs assessment.
Until the federal government actually starts using trans as a category for much of their statistics generation, this is one of the methods we have to generate the numbers we need to whack legislators with and point out the need for legislation that helps trans people.
It would also help if you Ohio transpeeps of color add your voices to this effort as well
TransOhio is asking members of the Ohio transgender community to complete a needs assessment.
The assessment will serve as a snapshot
of the Ohio transgender community, including transgender people,
partners and allies, who are current Ohioans or individuals who were
born in Ohio.
There has never been an assessment of
this type for the Buckeye State, and it will provide information on the
experiences and needs of the transgender community. This will allow
TransOhio to better serve and advocate for the community.
