Tamala Savage Show Interview (Part 1)
Last night I taped an interview on the Tamala Savage show that got rather interesting. It originally was supposed to be a single episode. But as with any discussion on trans issues there's a lot of ground to cover and discuss and not enough time to cover the issues, so I have been invited back on for an additional show.
We also had two fools call in that showed their anuses, and a freshly out gay teen that was being bullied and needed counseling.
FYI peeps, if you're a trans or SGL teen that needs help, someone to talk to or are contemplating suicide, call the Trevor Project at 1-866-488-7386
While you're waiting for that next show, you can listen to Part 1 by clicking on this link.
Jazz Huff Post Live Interview

Conversations With Tona Brown Video Series
The multi-talented Tona Brown has started posting interviews of various people in the trans community and others that pique her interest on her YouTube channel. She calls the segment 'Conversations With Tona Brown' and if you're wondering when your favorite blogger is scheduled to do one, it's going to happen the next time I'm in the Washington DC area.
These are wonderful interview which are not only shedding light on these two longtime Baltimore area activists, they are capturing a historical moment in time for future generations of trans people and frankly deserve a wider audience.
Here are some of the interviews she's done already with Cydne Kimbrough. and Monica Stevens

Moni's SistersTalk Radio Interview
Genia and I have tried to set up an interview on her and Andrea's SistersTalk Radio show on BlogTalkRadio for at least a year but haven't been able to make the timing work for both of us until last night
With TERF's and transphobic comments running wild on her MichFest thread, she contacted me for my very definite opinions on MichFest.
During the interview I gave some of the historical context and backstory that expresses itself in the frequent transphobic eruptions and virulent hatred the white supremacist TERF's have for girls like us.
Enough jibber-jabber, here's the link to the SistersTalk Radio interview with Genia.
Hope you enjoy it.

Upcoming Can We Talk For Real Show Appearance
I have the honor and pleasure of doing interviews either in print, radio or on radio podcasts on behalf of this community.
Hopefully you'll be seeing my smiling face discussing trans issues in television and video interviews in 2013 because I do want to put the GLAAD National POC Media training I received last year to good use.
Enough jibber-jabber. My first 2013 interview will be courtesy of the Can We Talk For REAL podcast team of Terry Boi, Michelle and Ina on January 16.
Can We Talk For REAL is a Blog Talk Radio Show geared toward discussing the important issues of the LGBTQ Community including many issues that are hard to discuss within the community
I along with TPOCC Executive Director Kylar Broadus and Chicago's Kokumo Kinetic will be discussing trans issues with the Can We Talk for Real broadcast team, and whatever issues crop up in our on air discussion during the time we're on the air.
You can also take part in that discussion or listen to the show if you're not near your computer by calling 347-215-8985.
Looking forward to talking to everyone next week and having another dynamic discussion on trans issues and how they affect our community.

Jazz Talks To Barbara Walters On Dating
Y'all know how much I love our little transteen Jazz, a girl like us who was introduced via the first Barbara Walters ABC 20/20 show report on transgender kids. Jazz is now approaching age 13 and one of the questions Barbara asked in the follow up show that was supposed to air on Friday pertained to dating.
The wise beyond her years trans youngling had some interesting things to say about it, including something that we her trans elders should file away

This Friday Barbara will visit the trans kids and their families that were interview for that 2007 show and find out what is transpiring in their lives five years later. One of those adorable trans kids was Jazz, and she'll be part of this broadcast.
It's slated to be televised November 2 from 10-11 PM EDT on your local ABC station. It is sweeps month, so count on the trans themed programming to flood the airwaves for a few weeks.
If you can't watch the broadcast, set those DVR's to do so and as soon as I have video of it I'll post it to the blog..

Interviews with Janet and Toni
Well, the stories and coverage involving #girlslikeus just keeps on happening.
And that a wonderful thing as far as I'm concerned . The more positive coverage we get the better it is for all of us.
Janet Mock is featured in a Colorlines.com interview discussing the fredom to tell her own story and how gender and race plays into the media discussions of trans people.
Janet will also be taking part in a plenary session at the Facing Race 2012 conference. It will take plac in Baltimore, MD and is a gathering of hundreds of racial justice thinkers, advocates and culture makers from November 15-17
And nope I have a previous commitment that won't allow me to be there for this event.
Toni Newman is featured in an article published in the November 2012 issue of the iconic EBONY magazine written by Michelle Burford entitled "Transgender and God's Child."
Looking forward to reading it.

Tona's Got A New CD!
I've talked a few times about Tona Brown and had the pleasure of doing my first TransGriot Ten Questions Interview with her. She's shared her classically trained vocal talents at various community events including becoming the first transperson to sing for a sitting US president. Now you get the opportunity to hear what President Obama and countless others did as she releases a new CD entitled This Is Who I Am and I get the pleasure of interviewing her about this new project.
TransGriot- Congratulations Tona on the release of this new musical endeavor. How long has this project been in the works?
TB-This Project has been in the works for a little over a year. It was recorded at Norfolk State University with my mentor, pianist and vocalist Geraldine Boone, and engineer Gerald Thompson last summer. We decided to make a little video and post it on youtube, to let my fans experience what it was like to record it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ju1o5ebbg2s We had so much fun! Be sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel to keep up with my V-blog posts!
TransGriot- What motivated you to create This Is Who I Am?
TB-This Is Who I Am was created because of conversations I had with Ms. Boone about how we did not see enough diversity in concert programming. African Americans have contributed enormously to classical music, but you wouldn't know that if you looked at the playbills and programs around the country that only play their music maybe once a year—or you would have to attend a National Association of Negro Musicians function or special program put on by African Americans like the African American Art Song society, etc.
I wanted to change that and showcase a few of the works that I love and enjoy. I also make sure that I also program a piece by an African American composer in all my recitals whether it's a Negro spiritual or art song or even aria as an encore. I feel this is the only way to preserve our music and to encourage others to do the same.
Also I have been asked by fans around the world to produce an album, and the pressure to produce something that really felt like ME was tremendous. I love the works of European composers as well, but I felt that my first project needed to reflect who I am as an African American woman raised in the south. Many of these tunes I would hear in church, or my grandmother would hum them in the kitchen while cooking. These songs, like jazz, are American music, so I also feel it is my obligation to keep this music alive!
TransGriot- What musical styles can we expect to hear when we purchase it for our music collections?
TB-What makes this music so amazing is that you hear influences of Gospel, Jazz, and Blues in these songs. Each song tells a story and when I am on stage presenting them I feel like my ancestors are standing right behind me. The music is very difficult to perform and to play, as many an accompanist have found. The arrangements are virtuosic and you must have a unique sense of rhythm in order to pull them off. I'm honored to be able to present these works to so many people, many of whom have never heard them before.
TransGriot- I touched on it in the intro, but what was it like singing for President Obama and how did that historic opportunity happen for you?
TB-Singing at the LGBT Leadership Conference was incredible, but what many didn't know was how stressful that night was. Unlike any other President, Barack Obama took an enormous risk coming forth with his support of our community, and we were told that evening that there may be a protest developing outside the Sheraton Hotel in NYC. Thankfully it did not happen, and I did at least feel safe with the security over a block long all around the premises. But at that moment it felt very real. I knew I was a part of history. I knew what it felt like to be Marian Anderson and know that just because you are singing for something you believe in you could possibly lose your life or be hurt. I was willing to take that chance and would do it again if I were called upon.
TransGriot -Are you planning to release any more CD's in the near future?
TB-Indeed I am. I would love to do more projects like this. It's imperative that this album does well, so that it can help me to do another album that will be somewhat like a part two of this project. There are hundreds of such art songs and violin pieces by various composers that most people have never heard. But the future is very bright for me and everyone will notice that I am collaborating with various artists outside of classical music over the next two years.
TransGriot -What do you envision happening in your musical career in the next five years?
TB-In the next five years, I envision more collaborative projects with artists of all genres. Music is music and I would love to work with R&B, Jazz and Hip Hop artists to produce great music for people of all ages.
I am also working hard to produce some recordings with my chamber ensemble the Aida String ensemble (www.aidastrings.com) while developing my music instruction business Aida Studios. http://www.facebook.com/AidaStudios
Please encourage your followers to join me on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/pages/Tona-Brown/105772866142812 or my Aida Studios page on Facebook to see what my amazing students of all ages are doing.
I am also on Twitter at Tonacity and my own website is www.tonabrown.com
Tona, thanks so much for your time and good luck with this first of what I hope are many more CD releases for you.

TransGriot Ten Questions Interview Links
In order to accomplish my mission of documenting our chocolate trans history and history makers, I started a feature called the TransGriot Ten Questions Interview.
What I envision and hope to accomplish is that I want to on a regular basis talk to people inside our community. I ask them ten questions that they can answer as short or as long as they wish on various subjects of interest to our trans community. I also want a mix of African descended trans people. I'm wanting in these Ten Questions segments to talk to our up and coming leaders, opinion shapers, artists, thinkers, icons and interesting personalities who are molding and shaping our chocolate trans world.
These are the initial ones I've already done, and there will be more to come.
