The Equality Act Passes House!

Image may contain: one or more people and text
HR 5, also known as the Equality Act, would add gender identity and sexual orientation to the Civil Rights Act of 1964.   How apropos that this legislation came up on the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOTB) and the 65th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education SCOTUS decision.

After some contentious debate and a failed attempt by the Republicans to amend it and send it back to the House Judiciary Committee, it passed in the Democratically-controlled US House on a final 236-173 vote.   8 Republicans joined the 228 Democrats voting YES for the legislation.   All of the 173 NO votes were Republican house members.

House Passes Equality Act in Historic Vote
Keep that in mind equality voters when you vote for your Congressional candidates next year .

Thanks to all the House Democrats who supported this legislation.   Huge thanks also to Rep. Katie Hill (D-CA) for her mic drop level speech excoriating the Republican attempt to kill the bill

Unfortunately since the Republicans control the Senate, that means the bill will not be taken up by the Republican majority.     That's okay, you can punish then at the polls in 2020 for their lack of political vision.

But celebrate this win, and let's begin tomorrow getting control of the Senate and the White House so we can make this the law of the land.

Colin Kaepernick To Get Settlement In NFL Collusion Case

Image result for colin kaepernick and eric reid at us open
Had a feeling when the arbitrator ruled in Kaepernick's favor last August against the NFL's attempt to get summary judgement on this case, this was inevitably going to happen.

The NFL and Kaepernick announced that they have reached a settlement in his lawsuit against the NFL for blackballing him for two season over the NFL anthem protests.

Carolina Panthers safety Eric Reed, who joined Kaepernick in the initial take a knee protests when both were San Francisco 49ers teammates, also settled out of court with the league for an undisclosed amount.

Related image
Even though Reed ended up with the Panthers, there was still the issue that cropped up during the 2018 season of him shadily being 'randomly' drug tested nine times.

While the terms of the settlement for both players were not revealed, and they are subject to a confidentiality agreement, it is speculated that Kaepernick is being paid by the NFL owners somewhere in the $60 to $80 million dollar range.

The NFL Players Association also issued a statement in the wake of the announced settlements for both players.

Related image
"We are not privy to the details of the settlement, but support the decision by the players and their counsel," it read. "We continuously supported Colin and Eric from the start of their protests, participated with their lawyers throughout their legal proceedings, and were prepared to participate in the upcoming trial in pursuit of both truth and justice for what we believe the NFL and its clubs did to them. We are glad that Eric has earned a job and a new contract, and we continue to hope that Colin gets his opportunity as well."

Congratulation to both players.   Justice was served in this case.   Hopefully we'll see Colin on an NFL gridiron soon.

Tokyo Passes Law Banning TBLGQ Discrimination

Image result for tokyo olympics 2020
For those of you who reflexively hate on the Olympics and fixate on the infrastructure costs associated with hosting an Olympic Games, here's a compelling argument in favor of having them in your city.

Image result for IOC olympic committee awards games to Tokyo
In the wake of what happened in Sochi, with the Russian government ramping up discrimination aimed at TBLGQ people by passing an anti-gay propaganda law on the eve of the 2014 Winter Games too late for them to be moved elsewhere,  the IOC as part of Olympic Agenda 2020 requires all future host cities to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

In order to meet that Olympics hosting requirement standard, on October 5 the Tokyo Metropolitan Government passed a TBLGQ rights law that states:

Image result for Tokyo

“The Tokyo Metropolitan Government, citizens, and enterprises may not unduly discriminate on the basis of gender identity or sexual orientation” and includes a government pledge to “conduct measures needed to make sure human rights values are rooted in all corners of the city and diversity is respected in the city.”
The new law also commits the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to do public education campaigns in the city about TBLGQ rights issues.

Tokyo, along with Tokyo prefecture which it merged with in 1943, and the Tokyo metropolitan area is home to 25% of Japan's population.

Japan doesn't have a national law yet legalizing same sex marriage, and Japanese transgender people are required to have gender confirmation surgery before they can obtain federal ID that matches their gender identity.

Image result for japan transgender people ai haruna
But Japan has been making positive strides on the TBLGQ rights front in the last several years. Well known trans women like 2009 Miss International Queen winner Ai Haruna live and work there.

According to Human Rights Watch, in 2016 Japan's Minister of Education released a teacher's guidebook that covered the topic of how to treat TBLGQ students.  That same year Japan, along with the Netherlands and the United States, led a UNESCO conference on TBLGQ bullying, and followed that up in March 2017 by the Ministry of Education modifying the national bullying policy to include TBLGQ students.

She was the first and only elected trans official in Japan until March 2017, when 26 year old Tomoya Hosoda became the first trans masculine person elected to public office in the Land of the Rising Sun by winning a seat on the Iruma City city council, located in the Saitama prefecture in the Greater Tokyo metro area.

He called his win at the time 'a marker for transgender rights' in his nation, and in the wake of it has worked to increase acceptance for all forms of diversity in Japan.

NH Senate Gets It Right This Time, Passes Trans Rights Bill

So how long will my transgender brothers and sisters in the Granite State have to wait for their legislators to pass laws that allow them to 'live free or die'?

And will you find the courage to do so?
TransGriot, May 4, 2009

Nine years ago I was justifiably going nuclear and putting the then Democratically controlled New Hampshire Senate on blast on my birthday after the all female led body voted 24-0 to kill a trans rights bill that narrowly passed the female led Democratically controlled New Hampshire House by one vote.

That vote, gallingly after they had no problem passing a marriage equality bill, kept New Hampshire  as the only state in the New England region that didn't have discrimination protections for its transgender citizens

Image result for nh HB 1319 testimony
The political script has flipped in New Hampshire since then.  Instead of the Democrats controlling all three branches of government, it's now the Republicans.   The NH Senate now has a 14-10 GOP edge versus the 14-10 edge the other way at the time.  The NH House is 226-174 GOP instead of the 225-175 Democratic edge it had in 2009.

Image result for nh HB 1319 testimony
HB 1319 is a bill that would update New Hampshire's non discrimination law and prohibit discrimination against my Granite State trans family in employment, housing and public accommodations.

The House passed HB 1319 in a bipartisan fashion 195-129 back on March 7 after three emotional public hearings with a combined twelve hours of testimony from many trans New Hampshire residents that went into the wee hours of the morning.

Today the New Hampshire Senate righted a nearly decade old wrong.by passing HB 1319 with bipartisan support 14-10.

Image result for chris sununu nh
The bill now heads to Gov. Chris Sununu's (R) desk, where he is expected to sign it into law.

Once he does, New Hampshire will become the 20th state along with the District of Columbia to legislatively protect its transgender citizens.

And this day has been one trans Granite Staters have been waiting on for a long time.

Trans World, Stop Bashing Trans Sex Workers!

Image result for Trans people sex work

"I know sex work to be work.  It's not something I need to tiptoe around. It's not a radical statement, it's a fact."
-Janet Mock

In the wake of the passage of SESTA, the Stop Enablings Sex Traffickers Act on a 97-2 vote by the Senate, one of the consequences of its passage and expected signature into law by 45 is that several
websites that our trans community who are sex workers depend on to pay their bills, shut down or took down those sections of their websites to avoid potential lawsuit from sex trafficking victims. .

Image result for transgender sex workers
And I wasn't happy when I heard as a result some sanctimonious comments from the trans peanut gallery cheering that while saying those folks need to 'get a real job'.

As Janet and others have repeatedly stated, and I agree with that sentiment, sex work is work

Your trans family doing sex work to survive is STILL your trans family, and I'm not liking the sanctimonious comments coming from some peeps on the Net that they 'need to get a real job'.
What makes you think these folks haven't tried that? Anti-trans discrimination in employment is real, even in TBLGQ World   If you think I'm kidding about that, check the 2015 US Trans Survey and look at the unemployment statistics.
Image result for Transgender lobby day
If you don't like the fact some trans folks have to do that to live and pay bills, I have a suggestion for you.  The next time a lobby day is held in your locale, get off your azz, go to your state capitol and  lobby your legislators to pass non-discrimination bills that prohibit discrimination against transgender and gender variant people.
Image result for Transgender job interview
Implore businesses and organizations to hire qualified trans people.  If you're a big baller and shot caller and have influence on hiring decisions, suggest that the folks making hiring decision add trans people to their mix of diverse candidates for open job positions. What  we will not do today or at any time in the future is shame other trans people who are  engaged in sex work to pay the bills.

You want to get your jollies shaming and screaming at someone, do it at the politicians who refuse to pass non discrimination laws that cover gender identity discrimination so they CAN if they wish to do so get and keep the 'real jobs' you screech about.

Image result for Lois Kolkhorst
TransWorld, we don't need to be bashing other trans folks in our community ranks. They get enough of that from the Republican Party, TERF's, the conservafool media and white fundamentalists

I repeat, the folks who engage in sex work are still and will always be your trans family and deserve your respect and empathy,  not derision.    Save that derision for the people who gleefully oppress us.

So TransWorld,  stop bashing trans sex workers who are simply trying to live their lives to the best of their ability.

Anchorage Anti-Trans Proposition 1 Defeated!

While many of us were heading to bed in the Lower 48, the citizens of Anchorage, Alaska were counting ballots in the latest trans rights battleground.

The anti-trans hate group the Alaska Family Council had managed to get a proposition on the ballot that if it had passed, would have stripped the trans protetctions from the city's LGBTQ rights law passed in 2015 by the Anchorage Assembly.   Proposition 1 would have also barred transgender people from using the facilities and locker rooms that matched their gender presentation, even if they had changed their identity documents.

Translation:  The Alaska Family Council haters were trying to pass a nastier Last Frontier version of North Carolina's HB 2.

It was also going to be the first time that the city of Anchorage would attempt to use a mail-in ballot for a civic election, and turnout was expected to be high.   Anchorage is also the largest city in the state of Alaska .

Image result for fair anchorage logo
The Yes on 1 IForces of Intolerance rolled out the usual anti-trans playbook of anti-trans lies and fear mongering but were outgunned by Fair Anchorage, the coalition group working to defeat the unjust Proposition 1

The Yes on 1 haters raised $128,000 to spend on their scampaign to $800,000 for the Fair Anchorage coalition.   Fair Anchorage not only had more money, they learned the lessons from the failed HERO defense fight here in H-town and attacked the bathroom predator myth head on.

Meanwhile the Yes on 1 side was committing the cardinal sin in Alaskan politics of using a non-Alaskan in their commercials.

In addition to ads from Alaska' native community, who have felt the sting of discrimination themselves, advocating for their trans neighbors and urging a NO vote,  Fair Anchorage also had local trans people in their commercials and engaged in their coalition of groups fighting this latest trans rights battle.

That predictably deployed trans predator lie by the YES on 1 trans oppressors was also blown up not only in this ad featuring an APD officer, but  a statement from the Fair Anchorage campaign that quoted firefighters, former state reps and a former police spokesperson.

It also pointed out that a YES vote would be bad for Anchorage.

“While backers of Prop 1 claim they're advocating for public safety, nothing could be further from the truth," Mike Stumbaugh, president of Anchorage Firefighters Union Local 1264, said, according to the press release issued by Kati Ward, Fair Anchorage campaign manager. "And in the 200-plus cities and 18 states with laws nearly identical to Anchorage's nondiscrimination law, the results have been the same: Protecting transgender people is not a threat to public safety — here in Anchorage or anywhere else in the country."

Over 40 Anchorage based businesses also opposed the passage of Proposition 1 as bad for business and the city reputation.

Fair Anchorage not only aggressively tackled and demolished the predator myth, they also took on and demolished another of the right wing's favorite lies in claiming that by letting transgender women poop and pee in women's restrooms, cisgender women's safety was compromised.

And here's one of the NO on 1 ads that featured a trans person and their parent

35,054 ballots (17.4% of the city's voters) had already been returned before the April 3 deadline.  With all the ballots counted, Proposition 1 was defeated by a 53%-46% margin.

Congrats to the Fair Anchorage coalition for decisively beating the Alaska Family Council haters.
That's wonderful news considering Massachusetts is facing its own looming trans rights election this November.

It also lends credence to what I have been saying in terms of transphobia becoming less of a winning issue for Republicans and the conservative movement

Hertha Berlin Takes A Knee In Germany

Players of Berlin kneel down prior to the German Bundesliga soccer match between Hertha BSC Berlin and FC Schalke 04 in Berlin, Germany, Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017. Hertha Berlin nodded to social struggles in the United States by kneeling before its Bun
The NFL players taking a knee just got additional support from their fellow athletes across The Pond who play the other football.

The German soccer club Hertha Berlin took a knee yesterday before their Bundesliga match with Schalke which unfortunately for them was a 2-0 loss   The Hertha Berlin starters linked arms and took a knee on the pitch while their coach Pal Dardai, General Manager Michael Preetz and the rest of the Hertha team kneeled on the sidelines before kickoff in solidarity with NFL players.

"We wanted to take a stand against racism," said Hertha captain Per Skjelbred in an interview after their 2-0 loss

The symbolism of this 'take a knee' protest was magnified because Hertha Berlin plays its home games in the renovated Olympiastadion, which was built for the 1936 Olympic Games by Nazi Germany.

Germany in recent years post reunification has also had their problems with racism rearing its ugly head there as the country becomes more diverse.

Image result for hertha berlin knee
The Olympiastadion stadium announcer said to the more that 50,000 fans in attendance, "Hertha Berlin stands for diversity and against violence.  For this reason we are joining the protest by American athletes and setting a sign against discrimination."

Hertha Berlin also said in a statement on the team's Twitter account "Hertha BSC stands for tolerance and responsibility!  For a tolerant Berlin and an open minded world now and forever."

Hertha Berlin's players were unanimous in their support for yesterday's action and admitted they were inspired to do so by the NFL protests. 'We stand against racists and that's our way of sharing that  We are always going to fight against this kind of behavior as a team and as a city," said Hertha Berlin forward Salomon Kalou.

This is just another undeniable sign that the NFL players are on the right side of history.  The rest of the world is watching the unjust things you do, and are commenting on it.

And in some cases, thy are doing so by taking a knee.

It's Not 'Talking Politics' To Cosign Oppression

Image may contain: 1 person, closeup
This is a guest post from my Arizona homegirl Toni D'orsay.  She's tired of people who use the term 'talking politics' to weakly attempt to camouflage the fact they are cosigning oppression when they do so.

This was originally on her Facebook page, and I'm signal boosting it for your TransGriot reading pleasure.

***

It is not "talking politics" when you say that trans people should not be able to use public accommodations.
It is not talking politics when you argue, even for fun or to "prove a point", that black people are not able to follow the law.
It is not politics when you argue that a woman does not have the right to decide what she can and cannot do with her body.
It is not talking politics when you argue for a ban on refugees or you call someone an "illegal immigrant".
Those things are not talking politics. Talking politics is not what you are doing when you support or advocate for oppression, which is violence, and for the denial of human rights, which is also violence -- even if you "don't think it is a human right".
It is not talking politics when you are racist, or misogynist, or ableist, or homophobic, or transphobic, or you think that someone is better than someone else because of how much more money they have (indeed, factually, the opposite is true).
I don't give a flying fuck if you think that someone needs to be polite about stuff or nice about stuff or if we should all just get along because, factually, so long as there i oppression, we cannot, and will not, and never will get along -- as the last seven thousand years have shown rather well.
Either you support human rights -- which must be zealously protected, and which take priority over your whole idea of feeling safe and secure -- or you do not.
There is no middle ground there outside the simple fact that we do not know all of those rights yet. But the ones we do know we must defend, and there is no "not doing so" and thinking that all of this will go away.
This is not with us or against us or beside us or over there somewhere with your thumb up your ass -- at least, not if you believe in people being treated fairly and decently and being able to live their lives.
You might have a philosophical difference of opinion about the value of human rights and all, but the moment your theories are applied to a real world test and involve the denial or abrogation of human rights to anyone, you fucked up, and that idea is an evil one.
You remember evil, don't you? Kinda out of fashion to talk about. Well, that's what all this stuff you think you are doing is -- evil.
If you talk about misandry -- you are engaging in an act of evil. If you talk about reverse racism, you are engaging in evil. If you think that the confederate statues should still be up, or that the Republican Party is a decent one, or that "unfettered free markets" are a good thing -- you are not talking politics. You are talking about being evil, and you are doing it for your own benefit, and saying fuck you to the rest of the world.
Which is evil done for evil purposes.
You wanna know what talking politics is?
talking politics is arguing about the best way to do a universal basic income. Talking politics is about the the best way to protect the environment without concern for its commercial use.
Talking politics is about how we go about ensuring that everyone's human rights are protected, not about who we are going to take them away from but pretending to really care.
Of late, about 90% of any substantive stuff is not talking politics. It's talking about being evil.
So if you wonder why some people still support the orange fuckup and the vast majority of people want to see him out of office, there you have it:
Those that support him are literally evil people. No matter what their reasons are. They are supporting evil, which is and of itself is an evil act.
Those that oppose him may be evil in some ways (I've seen misogyny and racism on the left, many times), but they are less evil than those who support the orange fuckup.

Boy Scouts To Allow Transmasculine Boys To Join

Some good news today from an unexpected source in the Boy Scouts of America.

The BSA has had a longstanding ban on transgender people joining the Cub and Boy Scouts by determining eligibility based on the gender listed on the birth certificate.

They have announced that they will now base eligibility for joining the Cub and Boy Scouts on the gender listed on the application.

Related image

This is probably being driven by the case of transmasculine child Joe Maldonado.    He was expelled from a Cub Scout chapter in New Jersey because of his trans status, and his family is contemplating a lawsuit for violation of New Jersey's human rights law in which gender identity is a protected class.

Whatever made the BSA change their minds on their trans policy, it was overdue and necessary.

Target Stands With Us- Stand With Them This Holiday Season

As Dr. King once said,  the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of convenience and comfort, but where he sands in times of conflict and controversy

Corporations and their leaders can also be judged by that same standard, and so far Target is passing with flying colors in standing with the trans community.

Since the unjust HB 2 passed in North Carolina and Republican controlled legislatures started proposing bills to oppress trans people, Target has been standing firm on its policy for employees and shoppers that you use the restroom in its stores based on your gender presentation.

When questioned about it in a CNBC Squawk Box interview in the face of threats from the American Fascist Family Association of a boycott, Target CEO Brian Cornell stood with our community

The AFA boycott they launched back in April has failed, but the professional TBLGQ community haters have made renewed calls to boycott Target and other companies during this holiday season.

We trans peeps need to be there in support of a company that supports us.   So whenever possible, spend your holiday T-bills with a company that respects your humanity.   Show corporate America that supporting trans people is good for their fiscal bottom line

Target stands with the trans community.  Let's stand with them this holiday season.

C-16 Trans Rights Bill Passes House of Commons, Heads To Senate

Image result for canada flag map
Some wonderful news for our Canadian trans cousins that happened in the runup to TDOR.

On November 18, Bill C-16, also known as the Trans Rights Bill, passed the House of Commons on a Third Reading voice vote after a last ditch attempt by some Conservatives to attach an amendment to it force the bill back into committee.

C-16 passed with overwhelming multiparty support from the Liberals, the NDP and the Greens. Despite some Conservative MP's hating on C-16, it did receive support from many Conservative MP's, many of them who voted against previous versions of the trans rights bill.

MP Randall Garrison (NDP-Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke) is the Critic for LGBTQ Issues and has led since 2011 the NDP effort to pass trans rights legislation.  MP Bill Siksay has led the NDP charge to pass trans rights legislation since 2005.

One of those Conservatives who has evolved concerning the trans rights bill was MP Michelle Rempel (C-Calgary).  She expressed that sentiment in her Third Reading House floor debate comments which have been praised across party lines in the Great White North.

Image result for michelle rempel“In the last three years, I have watched this community face bigotry, more discrimination, and becoming a flashpoint for fights that we should no longer be having in Canada, she said.

“I especially want to thank the trans activists who have lived through this discrimination. They deserve our thanks, and they also deserve an apology for when we have failed them in the past.”

Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould had this to say after C-16 passed
“Today, I am very proud that Bill C-16 has passed the House of Commons. This Bill would amend the Canadian Human Rights Act to add gender identity and gender expression to the list of prohibited grounds of discrimination.
Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould said she would push the Senate to pass Bill C-16, which&n... It also proposes to amend the Criminal Code to add gender identity or expression to the definition of "identifiable group" for the purpose of the hate propaganda offences and to the list of aggravating circumstances for hate-crime sentencing.
All Canadians should feel safe to be themselves. Our strength as a nation lies in our diversity and our inclusiveness. It is our responsibility to recognize and reduce the vulnerability of trans and other gender-diverse persons to discrimination, hate propaganda, and hate crimes, and to affirm their equal status in Canadian society.
I am pleased that so many Members of Parliament supported this important piece of legislation and I look forward to working with the Senate as it continues through Parliament.”

MP Garrison had this to say in the wake of C-16's passage.

Seeking to address gaps in Canada's human rights protections, I am proud to have worked with transgender and gender variant activists over the past five years. Today, Bill C-16 was passed by the House of Commons. This is the third time that the HoC has affirmed equal rights for all Canadians.

This legislation is now headed to the Senate, one more time. Hopefully, this time, the unelected Senate will act quickly, respect the will of the House, and fill this gap in Canada's human rights protections.

Now comes the hard part of getting it through the Canadian Senate, when two previous trans rights bills have died after passage in the House of Commons..

C-16 had its First Reading in the Canadian Senate on November 22. and now moves to the Second Reading and debate phase in the Canadian legislative process..

Bishop Yvette Flunder's Post-Election Message

I had the honor and pleasure of finally meeting a few months ago the amazing Bishop Yvette Flunder when she came to Houston to speak at the PODCC.

She is an unapologetic part of the radically inclusive wing of Christianity that needs to be the rule and not the exception in our world instead of the radicalized hatemongering Pharisees and Sadducees that claim they are.

Love this message that was on her Facebook page that she asked to be shared.

Done, Bishop.

***

As I am receiving clarity about the recent political events in our nation, I am ready to fight for the soul of Christianity...not against other faiths, that I also respect and revere, but to take back what was been hijacked from Christianity by those who call themselves 'conservatives' . Jesus was not a conservative...by any means! Everything he taught flew in the face of the conservative religion of His time.

I am clear that a strong, fearful and controlli
ng Christian conservative vote showed up in the recent election galvanized around the issues of abortion and marriage equality. This was the battle cry, but abortion rates were already declining.  "The overall rate of unintended pregnancies dropped 18 percent between 2008 and 2011—its lowest in 30 years,"according to the Guttmacher Institute, March 2, 2016.

Why? Contraceptive education, much of which was provided by Planned Parenthood. Babies that are not conceived will not be aborted!  Heterosexual marriage is on the increase according to Pew Research. 'The new data show that 4.32 million adults (ages 18 or older) were newlywed in 2012, a 3% percent increase over the 4.21 million adults newly married in 2011 and the numbers are climbing (The data does not include same-sex couples.)

So what is the real issue? Too much public boldness for those who were at one time at least closeted about women's rights, LGBT rights and racial equality...the race issue was exacerbated by a Black President. These fears when added to the 'lie' that the 'coloreds' were taking jobs away justified the one real issue I want to lift up...the conservative Christian church got in bed with evil, under the guise of doing God's work and it's soul is in jeopardy.

Without a message of welcome, inclusion, resisting empire, love and peace, what is the purpose of the Church? God does not have to dance with the devil, to benefit the Church. None of the politicians were/are perfect, but how can "God's Champion" have to pay 25 million dollars because he is guilty of defrauding people?

There are two distinct Christianity's in our atmosphere...I choose to be the disciple of the Radically Inclusive Jesus of Nazareth.

Miss Me With That 'ISIL KIlls Gays' BS, Trump Surrogates

Image result for Brunell Donald Kyei
Was laughing my behind off when I was sent this link to a story by my Dallas homie Rafael McDonnell featuring this kneegrow Trump surrogate Brunell Donald-Kyei flapping her loud and wrong gums on FOX Noise.

She ranted about ISIL killing gay people and claiming a vote for Clinton is aiding and abetting the killing of international LGBTQ people

Girlfriend, have several seats at your nearest Chicago gay bar and miss me with that crap, okay?..

And here is a white lesbian with Trump Derangement Syndrome spouting another variation of the same talking point.

Yeah, right.   Miss me with that 'ISIL Kills Gays' BS when you have people supporting Trump who would like to not only replicate what ISIL is doing here in the USA, but start by rolling back our human rights as demonstrated by North Carolina's unjust HB 2 law, Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick foolishly wishing to do the same here in Texas, attacking trans children, and the just passed Trans Rights Law being placed on the ballot in Massachusetts for a 2018 referendum.

Yes, LGBTQ rights are an international human rights issue. While it's important and necessary for those of us here in the United States to be concerned about what's happening with our trans, bi and SGL siblings around the planet, TBLGQ rights aren't secure yet here at home.

And my unapologetic Black trans self will be voting for candidates who do take my human rights and my humanity seriously.

And the Trump campaign is chock full of longtime gay baiting haters who would love to if he's elected, gleefully roll them back, and a vice presidential candidate in Steve Pence who has led the charge to do so in Indiana

So miss me with that ISIL Kills Gays crap when you or or party has not concerned in the least about the 23 (and counting) Black trans women who have been murdered this year.

Spare me that 'ISIL Kills Gays' crap when I haven't heard one syllable out of a Republican complaining about the anti-gay and anti-trans planks in their 2016 party platform.

Speare me that 'ISIL Kills Gays' crap when I hear nothing but cricket chirping silence when members of the Republican Party make transphobic and homophobic statements

Spare me that ISIL Kill Gays' crap when you are sending missionaries and people like Scott Lively abroad to spread transphobia and homophobia around the planet.

Spare me that 'ISIL KIlls Gays' crap when mnay white fundamentalists sound just like ISIL in their hate filled rants in right wing media.

And spare me the 'ISIL Kills Gays' crap when you conservatives are gleefully doing everything possible to oppress American GLBTQ people from the legislatures to the state and federal judiciary

Y'all may think we're as stupid as your low information voting bloc, but we've been paying attention to your deeds and your transphobic and homophobic words.

And that's why I and other reality based TBLGQ Americans will overwhelmingly be voting for Clinton and everyone with a 'D' behind their names  during early voting in our reprstive states and on November 8.

12 Year Old Mexican Child Attempts To Stop An Anti-Gay Protest

And it is written in the Bible that a little child shall lead them.

In a protest reminiscent of the 1989 'Tank Man' protest of a lone man stopping a column of tanks headed to Beijing's Tiananmen Square to crush the democracy protests happening there,  a 12 year old Mexican child stood in front of a line of 11,000 people during a march organized in Celaya.

It was in response to President Enrique Pena Nieto's proposed constitutional marriage equality reforms allowing couples in Mexico to marry regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation.

Marriage equality is gaining momentum in Mexico.  It's legal in Mexico City and several of Mexico's 31 states, with legal challenges currently happening across the country.

The photo was taken by Mexican journalist Manuel Rodriguez, who interviewed the child and asked why he did it..  The child replied, "I have an uncle who is gay, and I hate the hatred."
.
Sound like a perfectly logical reason to me, and far more in line with the moral arc of the human rights universe, unlike the 11,000 people in Celaya and other cities around the country marching to oppress their fellow Mexican citizens

African-Americans, Poor Whites and Latinos Know What America Has To Lose

You TransGriot readers know how much love and profound respect I have for the Rev. Dr William J. Barber, and once again this moral human rights leader is speaking truth to power

He's putting Donald Trump on blast in this post and rebutting his 'What do you have to lose?'  comment he says to his predominately white rally crowds in terms of his 'Black 'outreach'.for his failing presidential campaign.

Here's the post from Dr Barber that I'm signal boosting.

African-Americans, Poor Whites, and Latinos Know
What America Has To Lose
When political strategists told candidate Trump he couldn't win the Presidency while alienating every minority voter, he scoffed and said, "You're fired." But if he wouldn't listen to experience, Trump will listen to data. Hillary Clinton's double-digit lead in national polls has prompted the pivot Trump promised he'd never make.

So if you're African-American, Donald Trump wants your vote. Democrats have taken us for granted, he says, speaking to crowds in battle ground states that are overwhelmingly white. According to him we have been gullible and unsophisticated in the way we have cast our votes. He doesn't see us among his audiences, but he hopes we're listening. He promises that he-and he alone-can fix our problems. After all, he reasons, "What the hell do you have to lose?"

Black lives have always mattered in American political discourse, though not always for the right reason. But they have mattered, which is why we have had to fight for every civil liberty and legal protection we've gained since arriving on these shores as chattel slaves. We have had to be among the most sophisticated voters, knowing that no party or candidate is perfect and that race as well as class will always impact the policy decisions of whoever is in office. African-Americans have always had a lot to lose. The franchise of voting itself has been a constant struggle, then and now. Our history is too heavy a burden, but it has given us insight that cannot be taken away. This is why we know perhaps better than any group of Americans how much we all have to lose if we buy the lie of Trump and other extremists who've hijacked the Republican Party.

After a year of verbal brutality, racially charged speech, and regressive policy proposals that have masterfully tapped white fear, Trump wants to convince us he is not racist. George Wallace did the same thing in his 1968 Dixiecrat presidential campaign, which followed the race baiting campaign of Republican Nominee Barry Goldwater. Wallace, who had declared just five years earlier, "segregation yesterday, now and forever" tried to pivot away from the stigma of Old South bigotry by using the language of anti-elitism, anti-communism, and "law and order" to win white voters reeling with fear and hatred of the black freedom movement, the antiwar movement, the counter-culture and the women's liberation movement.

In a speech at Madison Square Garden, Wallace said, "I am very grateful for the fact that in 1966 my wife received more black votes in Alabama than did either one of her opponents. We are proud to say that they support us now in this race for the presidency, and we would like to have the support of people of all races, colors, creeds, religions, and national origins in the state of New York."

To win the White House in '68, Richard Nixon learned to out-Wallace Wallace by speaking in a new racially-coded language that capitalized on racial fears and prejudices without using blatant slurs and open appeals to white supremacy.  Lee Atwater, one of the architects of Nixon's campaign, called this Southern Strategy "a brilliant campaign... a blueprint for everything I have done in the South since then."

Nixon used his "Southern Strategy" to establish a new Sunbelt power base for the Republican Party in the South and West.  Many Southern white conservatives-Jesse Helms, Strom Thurmond, and most of what would become the New Right in the South-left the Democratic Party. Strom Thurmond organized conservative Democrats across the South to abandon their party and become Republicans in 1968, telling them that Nixon could actually win and that the white South would never go back to the party of civil rights. Nixon took the entire South (except for the handful of states that Wallace took), and his narrow victory in 1968 would have been a landslide except that Wallace siphoned off 13.5 per cent of the vote.

According to historian William Chafe, by 1969 most middle class whites believed blacks had a better chance at good education, jobs, and housing than they did. Almost 80 per cent said that most people on welfare could earn their own way if they wanted. Kevin Phillips, another of Nixon's chief strategists, explained that "all you've got to do with American politics is work out who hates whom and you've got it." Phillips advised Nixon that the Republican Party could win without Negro votes by painting the Democrats as a "black party." Predicting "a new American revolution coming out of the South and West," Phillips noted that "white ethnics" in the North were also ripe for the picking, correctly predicting, for example, that the Irish Democrats in New York would turn Republican "because they don't like the Jews and Negroes who run the New York Democratic Party." The South, Phillips said, would become the base for a new Republican Party.

This hijacking of the Republican Party depended on revisionist history. In an effort to gain African-American votes, Trump wants to claim the "party of Lincoln." But Lincoln's Republican party-and its opposition Democratic party-were the polar opposites of today's parties that carry those same names. If Trump really wanted to embrace the "Party of Lincoln," he would have to support the Reconstruction policies that won freed blacks' support in the 19thcentury. He would have to be for federal intervention to ensure equal protection, for expanding voting rights, and for public education. African-Americans are not naïve. We know Trump and other so-called conservative extremists doesn't represent the party of Lincoln because they oppose the policies that have increased our freedom and well-being in this nation.

Trump's pivot is a political ploy taken out of the Southern Strategy playbook, which was developed in the late 1960s and used by candidates from Nixon to Reagan to George Bush to exploit white Southern fear while avoiding the stigma of overt racism. This strategy taught state-level and national politicians, especially in the South, to reference race in the coded language of "tax cuts," "entitlement programs," "states rights," "right to work," and "voter fraud." By associating black political power with "big government," the Southern Strategy created a disdain for the very social uplift programs that had benefited many whites in the 1940s and 50s. If black people were stealing from their neighbors by taking "free stuff' from the government, then they were to blame for poor white people's suffering. This convinced many whites to vote against their own self-interest, thereby undermining the coalitions of poor and working people who had challenged systemic injustice during the labor and civil rights movements.

When I hear Trump ask, "What do you have to lose?", I immediately think of all that African-Americans have fought for and won, together with our allies from other communities: our freedom, our citizenship; our right to vote, to sit on juries, to serve in the military; our right to education, to integrated public facilities, to fair housing and just wages. The question itself is an insult to black people in America.

But it is an insult to poor white people, too. Because despite the injustices we have faced, there are still more of them than there are of us. According to the University of Michigan's National Poverty Center, 26% of African-Americans are poor-an extreme disparity compared to the 10% poverty among whites. But in real numbers, millions more poor white people who are being conned by the Southern Strategy and the extremists who use it to build their own power and wealth.

The worst lie of our time is that extreme policies only hurt black people. In state houses across America, we have seen this kind of political extremism attack voting rights protections, public education, health care for all, living wages, labor rights, and immigrant rights. It has led the way in refusing to address racial disparities in our criminal justice system, and its trickle-down economics led to the worst recession since the Great Depression. The so-called "big government" that extremists railed against for decades bailed out the banks that were "too big to fail," and poor and working people of every race bore the brunt of creditors' over-speculation.

Take it from a people who learned long ago that, "just trust me," from a rich white man is a polite way of saying, "You better know your place, boy." This nation is far from perfect, but we've come a long way from where we started. We all have a great deal to lose if we buy the lie that our best hope is in returning to some imagined greatness of our past. If history shows us anything, it's that we become a more perfect union when people who've been pitted against one another see our common cause, join hands, and listen to the better angels of our nature. Our true greatness lies in a determination to move forward together, not one step back.

HERO Passage 2nd Anniversary

It may have been one small step in the human rights evolution for many cis and straight Houstonians, but for those of us in LGBT Houston, it was a giant leap in our human rights 30 years in the making.
-TransGriot, May 28, 2014 'Houston, We Have HERO Passage'

Today is going to be a bittersweet day for me and everyone in Houston who busted our behinds, sat through three contentious marathon city council meetings and a contentious committee hearing to pass the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance.(HERO)

On that May 28 evening, I was so proud of my hometown and being part of the team that had helped passed this human rights law that covered 15 categories for our community.  That night I'd also accomplished a longtime personal activism dream of ensuring that we not only passed HERO, but it was trans inclusive.   .

At the time we passed it on that 11-6 council vote, I and everyone who fought tooth and nail for HERO's passage knew that night was the easy part.   Keeping it would be our task from that moment on.

But I and my fellow Houstonians who helped passed this much needed ordinance were bursting at the seams proud to have sent the message to the city, Texas, the nation and the world that discrimination's time in Houston had expired.

But as we celebrated the hard fought win, the Axis of Intolerance, led by the Harris County and Texas Republicans Party, longtime gaybaiters Steven Hotze, Dave Wilson and Dave Welch, and a cadre of sellout Houston ministers led by Rev. Max Miller were plotting to kill HERO..

They tied up its implementation in court as they collected petition signatures for a recall vote.  The rife with fraud petitions were found not valid in August 2014, and that set up another lawsuit that the HERO haters lost in January 2015 that led to it immediately being implemented..

HERO was still in effect at the time we celebrated its first birthday, but the haters had appealed to the all-Republican Texas Supreme Court, who unjustly forced it onto the ballot in an August 2015 ruling and set up the now infamous repeal campaign in which the HERO haters successfully deployed the anti-trans bathroom meme to kill it in November 2015.

We have a new mayor in Sylvester Turner and several new council members sitting around 'The Horseshoe' in those nice leather chairs.

Even more crucial to our efforts to pass a new H-town human rights ordinance, we still maintain a liberal-progressive majority on council.

But with Mayor Turner early in his first term, not likely he'll be pushing to spend his hard won political capital on passing HERO 2.0 right now even though it is needed and necessary.  Mayor Turner is going to focus on getting his agenda he ran on passed, and can't blame him for that.  He got his first budget passed (which did on a unanimous 17-0 vote), he's dealing with infrastructure issues, and working on solving the city retirement pension funding crisis..

That meas that we are
unfortunately we are back to where we started human rights wise in my hometown as this second anniversary of HERO's passage is upon us.  The positive PR we gained from passing HERO took a hit as we frustratingly watched the Republican Party and conservative anti-human rights activists replicate the tactics they used to kill HERO to either kill attempts to pass trans inclusive rights laws in other cities or enact unjust statewide laws like North Carolina's HB2 as Jared Woodfill and his merry band of GOP haters mugged for the cameras and bragged about doing so..

Are we upset about that in Houston?  Yeah, we are upset not only about losing a crucial human rights battle, but how it happened, and no one is taking that loss harder than me and my Houston trans siblings.

We aren't giving up on the fight to ensure that the human rights of all Houstonians are respected and protected.  It's just unfortunately delayed for now as we absorb the lessons on what went wrong, what we did right and come up with strategies to ensure our success when we finally attempt to push for HERO 2.0 or whatever the new ordinance will be called.

But we will do our utmost to win the fight to get an inclusive human rights law with public accommodations protections
passed in my hometown. And you can be damned sure I'm going to be doing my part to ensure it not only passes, but watching to ensure that trans Houstonians aren't cut out of it.

But here's hoping that within the next few years, we will have another trans inclusive human rights law added to the Houston Code of Ordinances and that we finally get to proudly send the message once again that discrimination's time in Houston has expired. .

KKK Joins World War T

Photo via Wikimedia commons and Arete13/Flickr
If you needed any more convincing that trans human rights is the civil rights battle of our time, look no further than hearing the interesting news the trans community gained a new enemy in World War T.

Joining the Axis of Evil fighting our humanity that includes the Republican Party, the Southern Baptists, the Family Research Council, Alex Jones,  Paul McHugh, Fox Noise, NC Gov. Pat McCrory,  TX Lt Governor Dan Patrick, TX Gov Greg Abbott,  the TX Republican Party, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and the TERF's is believe it or not, the Ku Klux Klan.

If I forgot any haters, let me know.  I want to give them the full credit they deserve.   But back to the post..

According to a Raw Story report that quotes Dothan Eagle reporting by Matt Elofson, at least two homes in an east Dothan, AL neighborhood reported receiving fliers that supported North Carolina's unjust Hate Bill 2 while soliciting donations and recruits for The Loyal White Knights of the KKK.  A similar flier was reportedly distributed in midtown Mobile last week.

The flier went on to attack trans people as 'abominations' according to the King James Bible, misquoted Deuteronomy 22:5, and peddled the lie that their (white) women and children's safety is endangered by trans people pooping and peeing in public bathrooms.  The transphobic hate flier also lists a website and phone number that you can call for info and to make donations to that Klan group.

Got three words for you Klan Klowns:  Matthew 19:12

Dothan Police Department Chief Steve Parrish confirmed the DPD had received the reports on Monday, and they were being investigated by the DPD's Criminal Investigation Division (CID).

'What you're dealing with is potentially implications of a hate crime or promotion of a hate crime, so we notified the FBI, " Parrish said.

Capt Will Benny, the commander of the CID, stated the flier appeared to be a recruitment flier.  "It appears to be against transgender (people) and transgender bathrooms, and it was basically a recruitment flier."

DPD Capt, Stacy Robinson said that the fliers were forwarded to the FBI as a precautionary measure.

"Obviously any time you get hate related material there's a reason to be cautious and investigate it," said Robinson.

It also points out something I've been warning about for months now in terms of the media letting unchecked anti-trans hate speech go unchallenged, or dismissing it for ratings purposes as if it were a legitimate difference of opinion argument.

It isn't, and now that anti-trans hate speech is now  manifesting itself into anti-trans hatred, and leading to harassment and attacks on trans and cisgender women   But with America's long time hatemongers in the KKK joining the anti-trans hate chorus, it helps point out that HB2, the anti-trans hate speech, and the bathroom crap being peddled is a Jim Crow remix.

It also points out my trans siblings and allies, that we are on the morally correct side of this human rights argument..  The Klan jumping into World War T and attacking the humanity of transpeople is irrefutable evidence of that..
