'Girl Meets World' Is A Go!

Ben Savage, Danielle Fishel, Rowan Blanchard, and Sabrina Carpenter in the series premiere of Disney Channel's "Girl Meets World."For those of you who grew up in the 90's, one of the iconic shows for you was Boy Meets World.  And yes, it was one of my guilty pleasure shows I enjoyed watching.

During its seven year run on ABC from 1993-2000 you got to follow Cory Matthews and his friends coming of age stories from their middle school years to their time at John Adams High and into college.

You watched Cory's friendship with Topanga Lawrence blossom into a romance in which she eventually became his wife, but not without some bumps along the way including a breakup and her family's move to Pittsburgh.   You also got to watch Topanga as she morphed from being an eccentric hippie child to a mature, calm and collected young woman.
Rumors began flying in late 2012 about a possible spinoff to the show focusing on Cory and Topanga's 12 year old daughter Riley and her best friend Maya.

abc girl meets world 02 jef 130617 wblog Girl Meets World Series Set for 2014The rumors and buzz got even more intense when Danielle Fishel and Ben Savage confirmed in November 2012 they would be reprising their Cory and Topanga roles for the pilot episode and Rowan Blanchard and Sabrina Carpenter were cast for the roles of Riley and Maya.

William Daniels, AKA Mr. Feeny also made an appearance in the pilot episode.

As for as the other Boy Meets World cast, they are in various stages of talks with the producers to eventually make appearances on this show.   The producers have give the old cast members open invitations to participate in the new show if they wish and wanted to save some surprises for that first season.

But the producers, Disney and the old cast are united in their determination to have Girl Meets World be the same type of quality show for this generation of kids that they enjoyed doing for the kids of the 90's.

Unlike Boy Meets World, which was set in Philadelphia, Girl Meets World is set in New York. Cory is now a history teacher with two of the students he is teaching being his daughter and Maya.

As for Topanga, she transitioned from a law career for life as an entrepreneur running a popular pudding shop that serves as a hangout for Riley and her friends.

Riley will also have an older brother named Elliot and a potential love interest of her own in Tristan Friar, a transfer student from Texas.

Production on the series has already started in Los Angeles with the first episodes scheduled to air on Disney Channel in 2014.

Here's hoping Girl Meets World does justice to the original show and lasts just as long as the original did.

Battlestar Galactica UN Panel Discussion

un_battlestar_galactica1
December will mark the 10th anniversary of the broadcast of the rebooted Battlestar Galactica two part miniseries on Sci-Fi that led to the critically acclaimed television series.

The reimagined Battlestar Galactica tackled many of the issues the United Nations deals with such as human rights; terrorism; children and armed conflict; and reconciliation and dialogue among civilizations and faiths.

battlestar_united_1
On March 17, 2009  Ronald Moore, David Eick, Mary McDonnell, and Edward James Olmos participated in a panel discussion co-hosted by the UN Public Information Department, the Sci- Fi Channel (I hate the SyFy it changed to) moderated by Whoopi Goldberg to help raise the profile of humanitarian concerns.and issues of importance to the United Nations

Here's that panel discussion that tackled many of the issues that the Battlestar Galactica series touched on during its four year run.  The UN panel rocked.

So say we all.

Janet's Back On The Melissa Harris-Perry Show!

Melissa Harris-Perry wasn't kidding when she tweeted that she needed to make Janet a #nerdland regular after making a stellar March 23 appearance.

And nope, Janet wasn't there to talk trans rights issues or LGBT politics.  She was back on the MHP show in a segment talking about our favorite hit show Scandal.

Scandal by the way is the first show helmed by an African-American female lead actress (Kerry Washington) since I spent some of my teen years watching my Houston homegirl Teresa Graves on ABC's Get Christie Love.

And yeah, if you try to call me between 9-10 PM CDT on Thursdays, it's why you're not getting an answer because I'm watching the latest exploits of Olivia Carolyn Pope and her 'Gladiators In Suits'.

For those of you who missed the #nerdland conversation about Scandal this morning, you can check out the video with one of our fave #girlslike us in it.

'Necessary Roughness' Season 2 Finale Tonight

I'm a big fan of the USA Network cable show Necessary Roughness, which follows the exploits of Dr. Danielle Santino who is hired by the fictional New York Hawks team to handle their mental health issues and eventually becomes a renowned sports psychologist.

Callie Thorne's Dr Dani character is based on the real-life story of Dr. Donna Dannerfelser, who was hired by the New York Jets as their mental health specialist.

In last week's episode setting up tonight's season finale Callie Thorne did an anti-bullying PSA for GLSEN that was put together with the help of GLSEN's Andy Marra.  .

In tonight's finale, the Hawks players who is about to come out of the closet is the team's starting quarterback.  It's going to be interesting to see how this affects the team chemistry, especially since the Hawks are chugging along with a 7-2 record and there were already some phobic remarks being tossed around in the Hawks locker room..

It's also ironic that the same quarterback who was less than supportive of star wide receiver Terrence 'TK 'King when he was going through his struggles, is now in the position of having to ask TK to have his back as he tries to come out of the closet.

While that hasn't happened yet, the odds are that we have already had or have playing right now NFL players who are in the closet.  It  is only a matter of time before this fictional coming out becomes a reality.

We'll see what happens on Necessary Roughness at 9 PM CST  when this show airs how it plays out.

RIP Larry Hagman

Another one of our iconic Texans has passed on.  Actor Larry Hagman, who everyone remembers due his most famous character as JR Ewing for the CBS and rebooted TNT show Dallas, passed away of complications from throat cancer yesterday afternoon in Dallas.

The 81 year old actor was born in Weatherford, TX to actress Mary Martin and while many people remember him for playing the delightfully ruthless oil baron JR, there's another role people of my generation remember him for in addition to his roles on Broadway, and movies such as  Fail-Safe, Nixon and Primary Colors

He played astronaut Major Anthony Nelson on the sitcom I Dream Of Jeannie that ran on NBC from 1965-1970.

He recently reprised the role of JR Ewing in the TNT reboot of Dallas that started earlier this summer, was renewed and has completed shooting for its second season that will start January 28.

As to what that means for the rebooted Dallas is still yet to be determined, but we will all miss JR's larger than life presence on the show and the man who played him.

Rest in peace Larry.

BSG: Blood & Chrome Webisodes Start Today

You longtime TransGriot readers know how much I loved the reimagined Battlestar Galactica and I'll admit I did shed a tear or two when it ended with the survivors of the Colonies ending up on our Earth.

Was pissed when Caprica was canceled after only one season, but now I'm happy to hear that the long rumored Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome series which focuses on a fresh out of the academy William Adama ten years into the First Cylon War is moving forward.

It's being released starting today in a ten episode series of 12 minute webisodes on Machinima Prime leading up to the February 2013 two hour pilot movie on SyFy.

Whether that turns into a series probably depends on what kind of viewership the webisodes get and ratings the movie gets.

I'm loving this quote from the intial webisode.  "You looking for some action? There’s the girl who’s going to give it to you.”

Scandal Season 2 Starts Tonight!

Y'all know how much I love Kerry Washington, and I'm looking forward to the start of the second season of the Shonda Rhimes produced ABC show Scandal starting at 9 PM CDT.

I also like Columbus Short and his character Harrison, too.

It cranks up tonight and picks up where it left off from that Season One ending cliffhanger episode.  It lets us know who Quinn Perkins really is, delves into her backstory and begins to answer the questions of what's up with Olivia and POTUS Fitz, how sprung is he over her (and vice versa) and is the FLOTUS actually pregnant?

It'lll be interesting to see what clients and cases pop up requiring the special PR skills of Olivia and her team.  So yep, it's going to be another interesting season at Olivia C. Pope & Associates.

What 'A Different World' Taught America

A Different World was an amazing, groundbreaking show, which is probably why we are so hard on the people who are allegedly producing shows for the African-American viewing audience now.

It set the bar high for the types of shows aimed at our community such as the Mara Brock-Akil produced Living Single, which will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of its first broadcast on August 29, 2013, the Kelsey Grammer-Akil produced Girlfriends and its spinoff The Game..

And yes, when it's time for Living Single's 20th anniversary, I'll have a trivia quiz waiting on you.  You've been warned.

Sadly some people producing shows for the African-American community have failed to meet that high standard and excel in producing 21st century coonery and buffoonery.

So I had to shine a TransGriot spotlight on a post from the other half of my fave power couple, Danielle Moodie-Mills.   She is also is the creative force behind the threeLOL blog  and wrote a post entitled "Black Excellence and Other Lessons A Different World Taught America'

She was paying attention during our blogger's roundtable at OUT on the Hill when I mentioned the upcoming  'A Different World' Quiz I created.

So what did A Different World teach America?    Plenty.  In addition to giving America a realistic slice of life in terms of our culture and the Black college experience circa late 80's-early 90's, they learned about womanism, South African divestiture, HIV/AIDS, date rape, the LA riots from our perspective, the Gulf War, and got introduced to our past, present and future actors and actresses.

America also got to see that young African Americans did the same things anyone else did when they went to college.   They studied hard, discussed the issues of the day, learned things about themselves and grew as young adults, fell in love, and prepared to enter that different world beyond college life.

And that's probably why this show is so beloved and important to African-Americans 25 years later and we're hoping that Debbie Allen is successful in reviving it for a new generation.

Fans Gearing Up To Save GCB

I wrote about how much I loved the backstabbing faith based antics of the ABC show GCB, which is based on the Kim Gatlin novel and set in the fictional Dallas enclave town of Hillside Park.

Was disappointed when ABC announced they would not be renewing the show, but the fans of this creating from the same writers who penned Sex In The City had other ideas.

A Save GCB effort has started with a website and online petition drive that has garnered 100,000 signatures.  In addition a campaign to sell out the just released first season DVD of the show has also been launched (and I'll have get my copy of that along with Scandal)

I loved the show, and the season finale has some cliffhangers in it I'd love to see explored and resolved in a Season 2.  Carlene discovers that Ripp has a Latina daughter named Lucia as her dream of her Condos for Christian Living in unincorporated Juarez, Mexico was a disaster.   Amanda and Luke's relationship is on hold after she discovered that he lied to her about being in Austin when he was in fact down in Mexico investigating whether Lucia was actually Ripp's daughter.

Speaking of relationships, Cricket and Blake's marriage may be tested because Blake may be about to be yanked out of the closet.   After Amanda put hers on hold with Luke for lying to her, she drowns her sorrows at a Mexican bar and ends up in a kiss with Pastor Tudor..

We'll see if the fan effort to save GCB is successful and if we get to see the resolution of those cliff hangers next television season.

''Single Ladies' Season 2 Starts May 29

Y'all are well aware of how much I loved VH1's series Single Ladies and was happy it got renewed for a second season.   While LisaRaye McCoy and Charity Shea will be back reprising their roles as Keisha and April, Stacey Dash will not be returning as Val.

She's being replaced by Denise Vasi who'll be playing Keisha's best friend Raquel Lancaster

It will kick off Season 2 May 29, and I'm looking forward to seeing how this one plays out.

Imagining 'A Different World' 2K12

With the 25th anniversary of the first episode of the groundbreaking show A Different World happening this September (and yes peeps, you will be getting another one of my A Different World trivia quizzes to ponder) , one of the things that has mystified me is why Carsey-Werner won't release Seasons 2-6 of A Different World on DVD, much less do a reunion show.

Is it because that show not only was talking about some groundbreaking subjects back in the day such as date rape, HIV/AIDS, and South African divestment to force the end of apartheid and the 1992 LA Riots, it was also one of the few that showed Black college students in a positive and intelligent light doing mundane things like going to class, intelligently discussing issues and falling in love with each other?

Surely that can't be the reason A Different World hasn't been released much less had a reunion show?

With the 25th anniversary coming up, it is unlikely a positive Black oriented show like that will see air time again since Hollywood is too 'scurred' (and racist) to greenlight it.  So I did some hard solid thinking and tried to imagine what an A Different World 2k12 would look like.

My vision of it is centered around Whitley and Dwayne Wayne's first born child who I've named Courtney Marion-Adele Wayne.   She's got her mom's looks and intelligence along with her dad's brains, and has to struggle with the expectations of being the daughter of Dwayne and Whitley and her parents competing visions for their firstborn child who is following in their Hillman footsteps.

Complicating Courtney's life is her freshman brother Dwayne C.Wayne, Jr. who while not as intelligent as his genius sister, has off the charts basketball talent his athletically challenged dad and godfather Ron Johnson never had.  He turned down several scholarships to collegiate basketball powerhouse schools in order to make his parents happy and attend their alma mater.  He is once again in his sister's and parents considerable shadows, wondering if he made a mistake in attending Hillman and is considering a transfer to another school. .

DJ also inherited his godfather Ron's way with the ladies, but has become interested in an attractive half Black, half Japanese sophomore world history major named Midori.  His growing attraction to her has him shelving his plans to transfer and successfully concentrating on his academics and raising his GPA with her help.  Her mother is the top female VP at Konichiwa Electronics and when Midori tells her during a homecoming weekend visit to Hillman that she likes DJ, her mother frowns at the mention of his name.

DJ's best friend is teammate Marcus Heywood, who also shares the same drama of being the child of noted Hillman alums in that his father is Bishop Dorian Heywood and playwright and poet Lena James-Heywood.

Olivia Kendall is on the Hillman campus as well fulfilling a several generation family tradition on her mom's side of attending Hillman.  She's a prelaw student who has admired the legal career of Winifred Brooks, who is now teaching law on the Hillman campus.   She's a roommate of Kendra Boyle, the daughter of Dr. Kimberly Reese-Boyle who has her own career plans that do not involve following in her parent's medical footsteps, but her grandfather Clinton's law enforcement ones to her mom's displeasure.

The Pit is still around, but now run by a more mature and wiser Darnell Gaines or a totally new character.  .

My imagining the show calls for it to focus like it did in the 80's and 90's on issues of importance to HBCU college students in the 2K10's.   Since the fictional Hillman campus is also in Virginia, it has a platform to comment on current Virginia state politics as well.

And yep, you know you'd have to have on A Different World 2k12 cameo appearances from Kadeem Hardison, Jasmine Guy, Karen Malina White, Dawnn Lewis, Darryl Bell and some of the other folks we know and love from the show..

I can also see grandmothers Patti LaBelle and Diahann Carroll (AKA Adele Wayne and Marion Gilbert) hilariously popping in on their grandbabies at Hillman when they least expected it, or Alisa Gyse Dickens reprising her Kinu role and visiting her daughter Midori on the same weekend Whitley is visiting her kids.

So will we see A Different World 2K12?    Probably only in our dreams.

I'm Loving GCB

When PamAm finished their first season, was wondering what ABC would do with the 9 PM Central Sunday time slot it was vacating as we wondered if we were going to see out favorite flight crew take to the skies for a second season that will be set in 1964.

Well, while we PanAm fans are waiting for ABC to make up their minds about the show's fate,  they decided to slide in a midseason show written by the creators of Sex In The City and based on the Kim Gatlin semi-autobiographical novel Good Christian B*****s.

GCB is a Lone Star flavored show set in the Dallas urban enclave of Highland Park Hillside Park and focuses on former mean girl Amanda Stopper Vaughn.   She's moving back to Dallas from California after her late husband Bill not only was on his way to Mexico with the proceeds from a billion dollar Ponzi scheme he was running without her knowledge, he was having an affair with Amanda's best friend.

Bill and her best friend both die in a car accident on the way down the PCH to Mexico.  As a result of the federal investigation into Bill's crimes and the seizing and freezing of their marital assets Amanda and her kids have to move back to Texas and with her mother Gigi Stopper.

Once back in Dallas for the first time in 18 years Amanda has to deal with the ramifications of her mean girl past in terms of her across the street neighbor, judgmental, Scripture-quoting Carlene Lourd Cockburn.

She was a 'javelina' tormented by Amanda in high school and with the help of much plastic surgery is now married and the new queen rhymes with witch of Dallas.

Carlene is also not happy that her baby brother Luke is dating her and her husband Ripp was one of the investors scammed by Bill.   He is one of the few men in Hillside Park who is indifferent to Amanda.

Cricket Caruth-Reilly is a powerful businesswomen who hates Amanda because she stole Bill from her in high school.   She is Carlene's just as devious best friend and has a gay husband she stays married to because Blake is the father of he daughter Alexandra and the only man who loved her for herself and not her money.

Sharon Peacham was the beautiful babe of Hillside Park High School and a beauty pageant rival of Amanda's but over the years has become insecure as her weight increased and she became the reluctant flunky of Carlene.  She's afraid her marriage is on the line because her husband Zach had a crush on Amanda in high school and mistakenly believes that Amanda wants him.

Heather Cruz is the single woman in the group who has overcome her humble roots to become the most powerful real estate agent in Dallas.

Heather is also the only one of the group that believes Amanda has changed, accepts her apology and hangs out with her and Gigi.  That puts her at odds at times with the other GCB women and especially Carlene who still resents Amanda and wants to drive her out of Dallas.

Of course, Elizabeth 'Gigi' Stopper is glad to have her daughter and grandkids back in Dallas so they can get past the rift that developed between them over her marriage of Bill she disapproved of and Amanda's belief that Gigi is embarrassed by her.   She is still trying to push Amanda into getting back into Dallas high society despite her oft repeated claims that she just wants a normal life.

So yep, there's a lot going on in GCB.  I crack up at how dead on target it is in replicating Lone Star attitudes, dialect, and the Texas references dropped in the show.

And yes, the characters are also staying true to Dallas' conservatism and Bible thumping nature because I chuckle at how some of the backstabbing action between the GCB's takes place in Hillside Park's church.

So yep, you know what I'll be doing at 9 PM on Sundays, watching another ABC show that has quickly become a guilty pleasure for me in GCB.

Pan Am Finale?

I've been in love with the period drama Pan Am ever since it debuted back in September.   It's not only a reminder of my time in the airline industry, I like the show being set in the 1960's, the characters and it being a smart, well written show.

Unfortunately ABC has it scheduled against the NBC Sunday night NFL games broadcasts.   Pan Am and its ratings have taken a major hit since the initial debut show drew an impressive 11.06 million viewers.   I suspect the major reason it has dropped is because its competing with those NFL games for viewers

The season finale entitled '1964' airs later tonight and as New Year's Eve looms for our favorite New York based Pan Am flight crew, there are major changes and drama going on in everyone's lives after a tumultuous 1963.

Ted finally admits to Laura he loves her, but there's a major complication with Amanda that might put a halt to their love connection.

Colette is caught up in being wooed by a foreign prince while Dean is kicking himself for losing her.

And yeah, where's Bridget Pierce in all this mess since she has her job back with Pan Am?

But Dean doesn't have time to be depressed about his situation since he's facing drama over the decisions made during that unscheduled stop in Haiti.

Kate's CIA supervisor Richard has been shot and a major attraction between Maggie and Broyles is sparked by her being put in a life threatening situation.

I'm not going to tell y'all the rest, you'll need to tune in at 10 PM EST to see how it ends up.

But one of the things that has fans of Pan Am concerned is there has been no word from ABC as to whether the show will be renewed for a second season or it has been canceled.

Sure hope it has been renewed because it is one of the few shows that appears on network television I really enjoy.   There are rumors the Pam Am producers and writers were going to use some dramatic license and integrate the flight attendant crew and I was looking forward to seeing how they were going to pull that off seeing that it didn't happen until the late 60's- early 70's .

I was also looking forward to see what world events in 1964 would act as a backdrop for our favorite flight crew's globetrotting adventures.

So like all Pan Am fans, I'm hoping tonight's broadcast is just a season finale and not a show finale.
