'Trans In Texas' Documentary Wins an Emmy!

Image may contain: 1 person
I noted that Kai Shappley has her bag packed to go on a quick trip to New York, but didn't know what the trip was for.

The trip for my adopted niece was for the Short Doc Emmy Awards, and the Trans In Texas documentary in which Kai had a major role in won a Short Doc Emmy.

This was the moment they announced the winner.   I couldn't be happier for Kai and the team that put it together.,

Trans, Muslim and Living In Malaysia

Image result for Transgender Muslim and living In Malaysia
If you're trans, Muslim  and live in Malaysia, it means that you are not only dealing with the anti-trans hatred aimed at you, you also have to contend with the religious police messing with you as well.

You also have to contend with religious authorities trying to forcibly detransition you back to living in a gender role you are not comfortable in

This situation our trans Muslim fam face in Malaysia is probably the wet dream of our Talabaptist right wing fundies to replicate the religious persecution of trans Americans here.

Here is a documentary discussing the fight for trans Malaysian Muslims to not only have their human rights they deserve, but just have the ability to happily live their lives.

Queens At Heart Documentary

Image result for Queen at Heart Documentary 1967
One of the New Year's resolutions I also made in relation to the blog was a renewed commitment to documenting and uncovering our history.

Queens At Heart is a 1967 documentary that focuses on four trans women, Misty, Vicky, Sonja and Simone and the drag ball scene of the time.   It also gives people a glimpse of the world our trans pioneers were navigating at the time    It was a world in which you were breaking the law and faced arrest if you were crossdressing or wearing feminine clothes while transitioning at the time.

Related image

The Houston anti-crossdressing ordinance even had a provision in which women could be arrested if they were caught wearing fly front jeans

Thanks ti Misty, Vicky, Sonja and Simone for consenting to do these interviews with Jay Martin that serve as a time capsule like slice of life.of that time.

I was in kindergarten when this documentary was released, so I felt like I was staring into the eyes of my trans ancestors while watching it.   It also gives us a idea of how far we have come since the 1960's when it comes to our understanding of transsexuality, how we discuss trans issues.

MAJOR! Screening and Panel Discussion November 20

cover-major-notext1.jpg
I had the pleasure of meeting the legendary Miss Major Griffin-Gracy back in 2012 when I was the keynote speaker for the TransSaints conference in Charlotte

In addition to getting to know our trans elder and hear her tell me her stories about being a trans human rights warrior in a much more regressive time period, I've had the pleasure of seeing her at other events over the last few years including BTAC.

And I get the pleasure of having her call to check in on me from time to time as a bonus.   Even better, she's not too far away in the Little Rock, AR area..

While I've seen the film, I'm still pleased and proud to be in the house for the Houston premiere of MAJOR! at the University of Houston. from 6-9 PM CST.

The screening is sponsored by Transform Houston, and will take place in the Agnes Arnold Auditorium 2.   It will be followed by a panel discussion that includes Jessica Zyrie, Fran Watson and some blogger y'all know.

Address is 3553 Cullen Blvd and hope to see y'all in the house for the film and the discussion afterward.

Black and German

Image result
One of the little known things about me is I took German in high school, and I have a cousin who is German.

Black people have lived in Germany for 400 years, and there are an estimated 1 million Afro Germans in the nation today.  I was aware of that history because of the late EBONY managing editor Hans Massaquoi and his book about growing up Black in Nazi Germany called Destined to Witness.

Massaquoi, while being a naturalized American citizen, still considered Germany home.

That's one reason why I was thrilled to discover the Deutsche Welle documentary by German journalist Jana Pareigis (who is yes, Black and German) discussing the Afro German community

Pareigis is also a history maker.   She is the first Afro German to be a commentator on German television for the German news network Deutsche Welle and now is a co host on ZDN's morning show

CNN, How Does A Show About 90's TV NOT Discuss 'A Different World'?

Image result for A different world
As a huge history buff, I have enjoyed watching the CNN documentary series that chronicles the events of the Sixties, the Seventies and the Eighties.

Last night the Nineties had its premiere and spent this initial two hour episode discussing nineties television.  It discussed not only the late night wars, the tabloidization of the news, Will and Grace, Ellen's coming out episode and the rise of cable TV.

It also talked about the golden era of Black TV shows and the use of the Black oriented shows by the fledgling FOX and WB networks to build their audience and networks, then kicking Black viewers to the curb for white ones once their survival was assured.

That's a two hour documentary by itself, but let me continue discussing the Nineties.

Image result for cnn the nineties
There was however, one glaring omission in last night's CNN show discussing 90's television that bugged me as I watched the initial episode of the Nineties to its conclusion.

It didn't talk about A Different World.

Image result for A Different World
CNN, how are you going to talk about 90's television and not talk about the groundbreaking television show that was credited with being   responsible for the increase in HBCU enrollment during the decade of the nineties?

A Different World may have started in 1987 as a Cosby show spinoff, but was on the air until 1993.   The show starting in its second season after Debbie Allen took over as producer of it realistically depicted HBCU life on the fictional Hillman College campus,   It also delved into subjects that HBCU college students of the late 80's- early 90's were dealing with.

Related imageIt not only discussed colorism, but discussed racism, sexism, date rape, pledging, South African divestment, the LA Riots, interracial relationships, the 1992 presidential election, the Sharazad Ali controversy and Desert Storm just to name a few of the issues the show tackled during its six season run. .

It also was the first show to tackle HIV/AIDS with the 'If I Should Die Before I Wake' episode that starred Tisha Campbell and Whoopi Goldberg.

A Different World also had a long list of people who did guest starring roles on that show who became major stars in their own right like Marisa Tomei, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Damon Wayans, Kristoff St John, Tupac Shakur, Eriq LaSalle, Jada Pinkett  Smith, Jenifer Lewis, and Halle Berry

So CNN, how does a show that spends two hours discussing 90's television totally whiff on not discussing one of the groundbreaking shows of that early part of the 90's in A Different World?

It was a glaring omission, and one that spoiled the opening episode of the Nineties for me.

Hope the Nineties is better in the next six subsequent episodes due to air than it was in this initial one..

Gender Revolution: Working For Change

Image result for National Geographic Gender Revolution Working For Change
The National Geographic Katie Couric documentary Gender Revolution: A Journey With Katie Couric  later this evening at 8 PM CST, and I'm looking forward to watching it on the National Geographic Channel.

The show if you missed it will repeat at 11 PM CST and have an encore presentation on Friday

Gender Revolution DVD
But if you do have it, I urge you to watch the documentary that will give you some Gender 101 education

Hopefully Dan Patrick and Lois Kolkhorst will be watching it, too.

The January National Geographic 'Gender Revolution' January 2017 issue is also a fascinating read.

Here's the Working For Change segment of that documentary. It features one of my Houston homegirls who now lives in Los Angeles in Marie, who I met when she was a student at UHD.

It talks about a program that Michaela Mendelsohn has instituted in the six El Pollo Loco restaurants that she owns there in which she is hiring transpeople in her stores.

'This Is Everything: Gigi Gorgeous' Movie Trailer

Image result for gigi gorgeous GLAAD awards San Francisco 2016

One of the things we are going to need now more than ever during this Trump regime is trans people telling their stories in the media.

Gigi Gorgeous and I crossed paths when I was in San Francisco to accept the award I received at the GLAAD Gala last September.  While she was slaying the red carpet, I was quietly observing everything that was going on with a wine glass in my hand and Angelica Ross at my side for that moment knowing that my moment to shine was coming later.

Our opportunity to meet each other didn't happen because after my GLAAD Gala speech, it was my turn to have folks surrounding me to chat, congratulate me for the award and getting my thoughts about the looming election. so unfortunately an opportunity for me to meet, talk and get to know her was lost.

If it's meant to happen, we will cross paths again.

Frankly I didn't know much about the 24 year old Canadian YouTube star and model until that evening.  Once I returned home to Texas I hit Google and started doing the research about her and her transfeminine journey.   It was fascinating watching some of her videos and learning that she had a following of over 1 million subscribers on YouTube since she started her channel in 2008.

Now YouTube Red is about to release a documentary on her entitled This Is Everything: Gigi Gorgeous that tells the story of Giselle Lazzarato's trans journey, and here's the extended trailer for it.

In the movie she talks about how YouTube became her therapist and journal where she posted her thoughts, and also discussed her thoughts about being denied entry into Dubai last summer because of her trans status.

The documentary debuts in select theaters on February 3 and on YouTube Red February 8

HBO's The Trans List Airs Tomorrow

Image result for the trans list hbo
For those of you who have HBO as part of your cable TV package, this is another instance of Must See Trans TV you may wish to ensure you don't miss.

It's the debut of the HBO documentary The Trans List, and it features a nice balanced mix of trans folks in terms of age, ethnicity and transition time in a series of five minute vignettes that capture the essence of the hours of interviews they conducted with each participant for this documentary.

And I'm pleased and proud to note I know some of those folks personally.  Hey that's one of the perks of being in the community for 22 years and counting.

 .

The people tapped for this documentary are Kylar Broadus, Caroline Cossey, Laverne Cox, Shane Ortega, Nicole Maines, MIss Major, Buck Angel, Amos Mac, Bamby Salcedo, Caitlyn Jenner and Alok Vaid-Menon that is produced by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders and features interviews by Janet Mock, who is also one of the producers of this documentary.

Janet was also interviewed by Time magazine to discuss The Trans List..

I'm looking forward to seeing it, and it starts tomorrow night on HBO

TransMilitary Project Documentary Kickstarter Campaign

TransMilitary: Ending the ban on transgender service project video thumbnail
As many of you TransGriot readers are aware of, I am a big supporter of open trans military service for many reasons.   It not only needs to happen for the over 15,000 trans people already serving in the US armed forces, but it honors those trans vets who have served our country.   It also will allow our trans kids growing up who wish to do so an option to serve as themselves.

The TransMilitary Project is a documentary film directed by Gabe Silverman and produced by Fiona Dawson  and Jamie Coughlin that seeks to tell the stories of the courageous trans folks in the US Armed Forces that have risked their military careers to push for open trans military service.

They are seeking to raise $89,500 to produce this documentary in this Kickstarter campaign that has 24 days to go.

The documentary will highlight what it means to be trans in our military and illuminate the discrimination they face in their military and civilian lives.

While the ban on transgender military service was supposed to end this month, it is getting transphobic resistance inside the military despite the fact that 18 nations and many of our NATO allies allow their transgender citizens to serve in their military.

So if you can contribute to making this documentary happen, please do.

MAJOR! World Premiere Coming Next Month!

You TransGriot readers are cognizant of the fact I have been tracking the progress of the documentary film on these electronic pages for the last few years.

Just received some wonderful news from Annalise Ophelian and StormMiguel Florez, the producers of the documentary film MAJOR! that focuses on the fascinating life of one of our trans elders in Miss Major Griffin-Gracy

I'm excited to announce that MAJOR! will have its world premiere in San Francisco's Castro Theater on Friday, November 13 as part of the San Francisco Transgender Film Festival.

I've had the pleasure of getting to see a preview of it, and those of you who get to see the premiere and MAJOR! when it hits your local film festival will be in for a treat.

And here's a link to the trailer for it.

It will be a fascinating look at the life of one of our Stonewall vets, and I even learned a few things about Miss Major I didn't know

I also hope I get the chance to jet off to San Francisco and see the premiere

'Game Face' Trailer

Fallon Fox  has been telling me about this upcoming documentary for a while, and now the official trailer for this Michiele Thomas film has come out.

The documentary movie is entitled Game Face, and features Fallon Fox  coming out as a trans MMA fighter and Terrence, an Oklahoma  collegiate basketball player who happens to be gay.

The film follows both athletes during their coming out process, and sheds light on the obstacles LGBT sports players deal with throughout their career..

'Passing' Trans Masculine Documentary

Screenshot 2015-01-20 18.51.45_1-1One of the things the world definitely needs to see and hear are the voices of trans men of color.

Just as the modern trans feminine narrative since 1953 has been dominated by the voices and stories of white trams women, the story is unfortunately the same for trans men of color.

Passing: A Short Documentary is a film by Lucah Rosenberg Lee and J. Mitchell Reed that focuses on the lives of three nondisclosed Black trams men.  The film explores what life is like living as a Black man when no one knows you are transgender and how each of them now perceives their own journey with gender after many years of being interacted with by the world as a biological man.

It will also explore how cultural attitudes towards race are central to how transgender men of color experience their maleness in today’s society because their experiences are different from the experiences of white trans-men.

The documentary film has been completed, and the Passing team is on a second Indiegogo campaign with a $3500 goal to raise funds to take it to multiple film festivals, pay for music licensing fees, and cover travel expenses for two of the actors to travel from Houston and New York to attend the premiere

Hope you hit that fundraising target, and hope I get to see it at my local H-town filmfests like Worldfest and QFest Houston..

'The New Black' Debuts On PBS Sunday

Ironically as we were fighting to pass the HERO, across the street from City Hall at the Houston Public Library downtown branch the Houston premiere of Yoruba Richen's film The New Black was being shown.

The HERO fun didn't end until 8 PM, way after the film ended, and I was bummed about missing it

I'll finally get a chance to see it thanks to my local PBS station.    The New Black will make its debut on PBS's Independent Lens show this Sunday June 15 at 10 PM ET / 9 PM CDT.

It focuses on the marriage battle in Maryland the Black community conversation around it. and features a few people I know.

I'm definitely going to be tuned in for it, and hope you'll watch as well.

FREE CeCe! Documentary Being Filmed

One of my fave peeps in the trans community is busy producing a documentary about our unjustly incarcerated sister entitled FREE CeCe!

The upcoming documentary is being co-produced by Laverne Cox and Jacqueline 'Jac' Gares.

In addition to an interview with McDonald by Cox, it tells the story of the events of that June 2011 night, the role that race, class and gender played in this case, the issues of housing trans feminine people in male prisons and anti-trans violence.

Gares and Cox also talked about the documentary project in a recent Persephonemagazine.com interview.

The documentary's original genesis came from research Gares was doing when she was a Series Producer on the now cancelled show In The Life.   Gares and Cox both thought the story needed to be told, and looked into doing this as an independent documentary.

Looking forward to seeing this when it is completed.
