Vice News has been doing some excellent trans themed stories lately. As y'all know I made an appearance in the Trans in Texas segment that aired last week .
Now they talk to 12 year old Maddison Rose and her family. She's the trans feminine child at the center of the controversy she didn't cause in Achille, OK that has gone national.
The bullying from transphobic adults that approached hate crime levels is a major reason why Maddie and her family will be Houstonians soon. We're ready to welcome Maddie and her family here to H-town with open arms.
Here's the video from that Vice News show.

Transphobic Oklahomans Plot Hate Attack On Pre Teen Trans Child
If I need any more incentive to push harder to pass hate crimes and nondiscrimination legislation that protects trans people, I need to look no further than north of the Red River into Oklahoma
This disgusting series of Facebook posts came to light from Oklahoma courtesy of the Hate Trackers website . Burney and Jamie Crenshaw in the Achille ISD parents group began ranting about a 12 year old trans girl attending school in the district just north of the Texas-Oklahoma border. It didn't take long for the Facebook posts to dive into the transphobia ignorance and dehumanizing trans hate speech sewer.
And nope, these aren't the trans child's peers. They are adults.
One post by Kevin Bickerstaff advocated encouraging Achille ISD students to violently attack the trans girl in question until she is too afraid and traumatized to come to school.
"Just tell kids to kick ass in the bathroom and it won't want to come back," wrote Bickerstaff in his FB post.
Eddie Belcher, who has alleged white supremacist ties, advocated cutting the trans child's genitals.
"If he wants to be female, make him female. A good sharp knife will do the trick," wrote Belcher.
The conspirators also advocated in those trans hate posts coming to subsequent Achille ISD board meetings to demand they take action against the pre-teen trans student.
Gee, wonder if they will be bringing pitchforks and tiki torches to those Achille ISD meetings as well?
The disturbing posts also got the attention of trans parents groups, the Oklahoma media, the Achille ISD and our TBLGIQ accomplices. Meanwhile in reaction to the violent transphobes, the parents of the trans girl sought an emergency protective order on August 10 against Crenshaw.
Achille ISD took down the transphobic posts from their Facebook page, and it does have an anti-bullying policy Wonder what Achille ISD superintendent Rick Beene thinks about it and these violent parents wishing to harm a trans child?
Hopefully they have also gotten the attention of law enforcement officials in Oklahoma.
Oklahoma was one of the Republican controlled states in which the legislature pushed for anti-trans hate legislation that fortunately failed.
What happened in Achille is a salient example of anti-trans rhetoric being peddled by the TERF's, the conservative movement, white fundamentalists, right wing media and the GOP for political advantage now filtering down to the unwashed rural Trump loving masses and having negative impacts on the real lives of transgender people.
Anti-trans hate thoughts + anti-trans hate speech = anti-trans hate violence/murders. You hatemongers are aiming that rhetoric against trans children and it needs to stop.
I repeat, stop it now before it gets to the violence and murder result of the Equation of Trans Hate.

Burger King Anti-Bullying Commerical
I was kid who was targeted by bullies in elementary until I kicked one of the in the family jewels in 3rd grade, and then it stopped. So this Burger King anti-bullying commercial resonated with me.
It's also on my mind because Spirit Day happened last week.
In this commercial a hidden camera captures the reactions of customers to a kid being bullied by his peers (played by actors).

Laverne's Reminder For You To Go Purple For Tomorrow's Spirit Day
Laverne took a break from filming Season 3 of Orange Is The New Black to remind you peeps about tomorrow's Spirit Day
So what is Spirit Day? On October 16 we take time to wear purple to show solidarity with LGBT youth and take a united stand against bullying. It was a proposed idea by Canadian teenager Brittany McMillan which was celebrated for the first time on October 20, 2010
Spirit Day takes its name from the purple stripe of the Gilbert Baker created rainbow flag, which represents spirit, hence the name for the day..
The day was a response to a 2010 outbreak of bullying related suicides of gay student, including Rutgers student Tyler Clementi
And yep, it has it's own #spiritday hashtag
So here's Laverne's video, and break out those purple outfits tomorrow.

Jewlyes Gutierrez Case Update
I still find it problematic that Jewlyes was the only once charged with battery when the other three girls bullied her for months, instigated the fight and were getting their shots in on Jewlyes who was defending herself.
The other element that bothers me is that no one except this blogger has has really asked the hard things that make you go hmm questions about how much influence the obviously transphobic detective investigating this case had to do with that outcome.
The mediated restorative justice sessions will take place, with Jewlyes returning to Maddock's court May 1 to report on the progress and a possible dropping of the battery charge.
“I am relieved to know that Jewlyes will now have the chance to find peace and safety outside of the criminal justice system," said Transgender Law Center Executive Director Masen Davis. "Youth belong in schools not jails. All students, including transgender students, should be able to go to school feeling safe and supported. At Transgender Law Center we have heard time and time again from transgender youth, especially youth of color, who are being excluded from being able to participate fully in school due to concerns about safety.”
While I eho the sentiments of Masen, I'd be more relieved if the charges had been dropped,

Bullied Trans Teen Girl Being Charged For Defending Herself
But that's exactly what has happened in this case. Gutierrez is being charged with a single count of misdemeanor battery for defending herself against three cis female attackers who had been bullying her.
Wanna guess what happened to the bullies? Nada.
What the hell was Contra Costa County DA Mark Peterson and assistant DA Dan Cabral thinking? One of the girls takes spit laden gum out of her mouth, threw it in Jewelyes' face, and Jewelyes is the one getting charged?
You've got to be kidding me.
"I don't understand quite why the District Attorney's office would prosecute someone who's already been a victim of bullying. I think it's a further victimization of somebody who's been a target of homophobia and transphobia."
So do I. DA's Peterson and Cabral need to drop the charges they leveled at Jewelyes and let the school handle it, which it already did with suspensions to all the girls involved.
Charles Ramsey, the President of the West Contra Costa School Board, says this should have been a teachable moment and not "something that should rise the level of where it has to go to the District Attorney's office for prosecution."
So do the right thing Contra Costa DA's office. Drop the charges.
TransGriot Update: Here's a petition asking the Contra Costa DA to do precisely that.

California Trans Teen Tells Her Story To The School Board
Hercules High School sophomore student Jewelyes Gutierrez got fed up with the bullying and transphobic harassment being aimed at her on an almost daily basis. She appealed to the school's vice principal for help in stopping it, who ignored her request.
That frustration finally boiled over in the on campus November 15 fight between her and three girls egged on by other students that was captured on video, went viral and they were all suspended for it.
Jewelyes told her story in a December 3 community meeting convened by the West Contra Costa School Board
"As I was telling her how she was being disrespectful and rude, she spits gum in her hand and throws it in my face," said Gutierrez. "It was just build up after build up after build up and no one was there to really, like, help me."
"I was just sticking up for myself," she said. "Because you're different, you'll get picked on, you'll get name calling, bullied, taunted, harassed -- all those."
The West Contra Costa School Board to their credit in the wake of this incident is working on a new anti-bullying policy they will vote on January 29.
Will definitely be keeping an eye on this situation.

Spirit Day 2013
Today is Spirit Day, a commemoration day created by Canadian teen Brittany McMillan first observed in 2010 in reaction to a spike in the bullying provoked suicides of LGBT teens and young adults.
We break out the purple clothing in order to display our solidarity with TBLG youth who are victims of and who are being bullied.
Spirit Day received its name from the purple stripe on the rainbow flag created by Gilbert Baker, which represents 'spirit'
It's also a reminder of why we GLBT leaders and our organizations are fighting to ensure a world in which our trans, bi and SGL youth are respected, protected and enveloped in love just like every other child.
So here's hoping you TransGriot readers get in the spirit of this day and rock something in your closet that is purple colored to support our BTLG younglings.

Love Is All You Need?
This is a short film in which the societal script is flipped and being gay or lesbian is considered the norm and heterosexuality is seen as 'sinful' or 'awful'. It focuses on a young teen named Ashley who is growing up in that world as hetero and is being verbally and physically bullied for it.
The film has won 19 film festival awards(and counting)
There are some graphic scenes in this short film and trigger alerts, but it realistically simulates what gay and trans kids go through in terms of dealing with a world they are at odds with and feeling alone and unsupported in it.

Bullying and Where Are the Parents?
Guest post from Renee of Womanist Musings
I have come to hate the term where are the parents because it ignores that parents can dedicate every waking minute to fighting for their kids and not make any progress because the system is not designed to be helpful. I have also come to hate the term zero tolerance policy in reference to bullying because it's a lie. When my children were born, I promised to love them unconditionally, to support them and fight for them whenever necessary. I have kept this vow but it has not been easy. The first time my oldest son was bullied, he was five years old and he was being called "brown boy." Today, the taunts have escalated and now he is being called the N word.
For the last two years, one boy on my son's bus has delighted in being a bully. My son hasn't been his only victim but being Black, he is the only one being called a racial slur. I have talked to the school bus company and the principal and the best I have managed is to get the child booted off the bus for a week at a time. This means my son gets a week of safety and comfort but as soon as the boy starts riding on the bus again, the process starts all over. In desperation, I called the NRP (Niagara Regional Police), hoping to push the idea that this amounted to harassment, but they wouldn't even take a report, let alone go out to the school and talk to the child in question or investigate. They advised me to tell my son to just ignore the racial slurs and to tell him that the bully was simply maladjusted. Apparently, what the bully is doing is not a crime. I suggested that this situation was going to end up with my son seriously hurting this kid, the kid seriously hurting my son, or my son in a body bag, because this is what happens when bullying is ignored. The cop was quiet for a moment and simply said these things happen. Apparently, someone has to be hurt or die for this to be taken seriously.
At present, I am trying to get in touch with the superintendent and getting the run around. This recent incident isn't even a case of my son's word against the bully, because not only did other children confirm his story, so did the bus driver. When I spoke to the bus company this morning, they admitted that the child in question has a history of this behaviour and promised to have the bus driver try to look out for my son. How exactly can he look out for my son when he has to pay attention to the road? They cannot even institute a seating arrangement to force the child to sit up front, so that he is away from other children because that apparently would be too stigmatizing. My son has been hurt for two years by this bully but apparently, the bully's fee fees are more important.
So, where are the parents? Well, this parent is fighting to try and protect my child and it is the system that is failing our family. I don't want to hear condolences after something serious happens, I want my baby boy to go to school in a safe environment and get a good education. That is what my tax dollars pay for and what I have every right to expect as a Canadian citizen. A parent can call the schools, interact with the school board and even call the cops, but unless the system meets them halfway nothing changes. Bullying continues to happen because despite their mediocre diversity classes and seminars on bullying, school officials don't give a damn and are not interested in substantive change.
It disgusts me that our story is not unique. Across North America, there are families just like ours fighting. We have had parents send their kids to school with stun guns, we have had a mother show up at the bus stop to beat up their child's bully, and we have had a father get on a school bus to cuss out their child's bullies and nothing changes. The parent gets into trouble and even in some cases arrested and charged, but what choice did they have? There have been movies made about bullying and despite all of the lipservice being paid to ending bullying nothing has changed. Yet, when a child dies, the refrain is always, "where are the parents?" More fool me, for teaching my son that the right answer is to trust the system to do its job and faithfully report these incidents. Every time there is a PSA on television, they advise children to speak to an adult and promise them that the bullying will stop, if they just manage to build up the courage to tell someone. It's a lie and they are giving children false hope because it won't stop, even if they have parents dedicated to fighting for them.
So where do I go now? Yes the little ass is banned from the school bus for a week and it will give my son a small reprieve but given his history, it will simply happen again. I also have to worry about my youngest son who rides that same bus everyday. He has heard the taunts and sees his brothers pain. Bullying doesn't just effect one person but entire families. I have demanded that he be removed from the bus or be forced to sit at the front and I don't think that this is asking too much. I'm tired of being encouraged to have sympathy for the bully. I was even asked how I would feel if the child had a disability, as though being disabled gives one license to be a bigoted asshole. This is what they mean when they say zero tolerance - have tolerance and pity for the bully. Our education system is broken because it is failing in its responsibility to protect marginalized or otherwise vulnerable kids. In short, the parents are here and we are fighting but nothing is changing and our kids remain vulnerable each and everyday this allowed to continue on unchecked.

Callie Thorne's GLSEN PSA
I'm a big fan of the USA network show Necessary Roughness that follows the exploits of psychologist Dr Dani Santino. She works with the fictional New York Hawks football team to help the players sort out their personal problems while trying to sort out the complications in her own post divorce life with teenage kids,
In a two part story arc season finale, one of the Hawks players will come out of the closet and we get to see that unfold and how it impacts the team, especially when the player coming out is the team's quarterback.
Callie Thorne, who plays Dr. Dani, taped this PSA for GLSEN that aired during the broadcast of the show.

Anchor Delivers A Verbal Smackdown To A Bully
Note to bullies. Never mess with someone who has a bigger media platform than you do and is willing to use it. You will get your feelings hurt.
WKBT-TV anchor Jennifer Livingston of La Crosse, WI lays the verbal smackdown to Kenneth W. Krause, who e-mailed her a hurtful fat shaming commentary concerning her weight she felt was a low blow.
She also noted during her on-air rebuttal that October is Anti-Bullying Awareness Month.

Break Out The Purple-It's Spirit Day!
It's the newly minted day created by teen Brittany McMillan in which we break out the purple clothing in order to display our solidarity with TBLG youth as we combat a bullying epidemic that is driving our younglings to take their lives in many cases.
On the rainbow community flag, the purple stripe on it represent spirit, hence the name of the day.
This October 20 day is one in which we not only wear purple to support our youth, but as we show solidarity with our younglings by breaking out everything in our closets in that color, we are also working tirelessly toward creating a world in which BTLG youth are respected, protected and valued.By working toward that world and confronting bullying head on, we hope that once we create that world in which bullying is not seen as a rite of passage but unacceptable behavior, we will never again see situations develop in which a child feels that their only response to ending the bullying being aimed at them is to take their own life.
That's unacceptable to me, unacceptable to the rainbow community and should be unacceptable to society as well.
So yeah, time to break out my purple blouse and the purple pumps to go with it.

Upcoming Spirit Day 2011-Morgan Speaks
Spirit Day 2011 will happen Thursday October 20.
It was conceived last year by teen Brittany McMillan as a response to the young people who had taken their own lives.
On Spirit Day which will happen every October 20, individuals, schools, organizations, corporations, media professionals and celebrities wear and encourage others to wear purple, which in the BTLG community rainbow flag symbolizes spirit.
It is also organized as a way for people to show their support for TBLG youth and to speak out against bullying. All you have to do you be down with Spirit Day is simply wear purple on October 20 as we all continue to work to create a world in which LGBT teens are celebrated and accepted for who they are.
Of course, if you wish to do more to stem the tide of bullying in our schools, then that all good too.
GLAAD Online Communications Manager Morgan Goode explains in this video why she's wearing purple tomorrow.
