R-E-S-P-E-C-T The Queen Of Soul's Birthday
Today is Aretha Franklin's 69th birthday, so it is time to bow in the direction of Detroit and pay homage to one of our iconic singers while she still walks amongst us mere mortals in her queendom.
The Queen of Soul was born on this date in 1942, and yes I have much love for her music.
Don't forget she sang at the 2009 inauguration of President Obama.
PETA may hate her, but as I said in last year's birthday post, frack them. Who cares what those fools think? .
Happy birthday, your royal higness!

Happy 99th Birthday Bayard Rustin!
Today is not only St Patrick's Day, but the 99th birthday of civil rights icon Bayard Rustin, who was born in West Chester, PA on this date in 1912.
Rustin was one of our trailblazing leaders who was an advisor to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr on the principles of non violence, helped Dr. King organize the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, was the chief organizer of the 1963 March on Washington, a behind the scenes leader in the Civil Rights Movement, a trustee on University of Notre Dame's Board of Regents in the early 70's, a founder of the A. Philip Randolph Institute and a human rights and election monitor for Freedom House.
He not only was a civil rights movement hero, Rustin was also a trailblazing leader in the gay rights movement. He testified on behalf of New York's Gay Rights Bill and said this in his 1986 speech the 'New Niggers Are Gays':
Today, blacks are no longer the litmus paper or the barometer of social change. Blacks are in every segment of society and there are laws that help to protect them from racial discrimination. The new "niggers" are gays. . . . It is in this sense that gay people are the new barometer for social change. . . . The question of social change should be framed with the most vulnerable group in mind: gay people
He died on August 24, 1987 due to a perforated appendix.
According to the New York Times, Rustin once wrote that 'The principal factors which influenced my life are 1) nonviolent tactics; 2) constitutional means; 3) democratic procedures; 4) respect for human personality; 5) a belief that all people are one.
Feel you on all of that Brother Rustin. Hope we are throwing a serious party for your Centennial birthday next year or the planning for it is in the works..
And for you haters, especially in the African-American community who ignorantly assert that gay peeps have 'done nothing for our people', the life of Bayard Rustin is a powerful rebuke to that bull feces.

Happy Birthday, Jasmine!
Y'all know I loves me some Jasmine Guy, and today is her birthday. My fave quadruple threat artist was born on this date in Boston in 1964.
So in order to celebrate her birthday properly, I'll sit down later today and start checking out some old A Different World episodes (still waiting Carsey-Werner for y'all to release Seasons 2-6 on DVD).
In the interim, while we're waiting for Carsey-Werner to come to their senses and release Season 2-6 of A Different World for the legions of fans who love the show, check out this video of her singing 'Just Want To Hold You' from her self titled 1990 CD
Happy birthday Jasmine! May you have many more.

Teena Marie's 55th Birthday
Today would have been the 55th birthday of one of my fave singers Teena Marie. She was born on this date in Santa Monica, CA in 1956 and recently passed away the day after Christmas of natural causes..
I and all her fans feel as though the Ivory Queen of Soul was taken away from us far too soon, and know her born on Christmas Day daughter Alia Rose probably feels the same way. She is definitely missed, but she left us a lot of wonderful music to remember her with.
Alia is following in her mom's musical footsteps, and if she's even half as good as her Grammy winning mother, the music industry can sure use her.
Rest in peace Lady Tee.

Happy Birthday Toni D!
There's another Toni I love even more than a certain petite diva from Severn, MD and today is her birthday.
The Toni I'm talking about is Antonia Elle D'orsay, AKA Dyssonance for those of you who have had the pleasure of reading or being on the receiving end of her commentary at various blogs and her own spot.
That is when she isn't working at her day job.
I have had the pleasure of meeting her and getting to know her since 2009, and wasn't going to let today pass without wishing her a very happy, stress free, and blessings filled birthday.
Happy birthday sis! May you have many more so you can keep speaking truth to power and keep tellin' it like it T-I-S is!.
