A PROCLAMATION
As a long-cherished piece of American culture, music offers a vibrant soundtrack to the story of our people and our Union. At times when words alone could not bring us together, we have found in melodies and choruses the universal truths of our shared humanity. African-American musicians have left an indelible mark on this tradition, and during African-American Music Appreciation Month, we pay special tribute to their extraordinary contributions.
Generations of African Americans have used music to share joy and pain, triumph and sorrow. Spiritual hymns gave hope to those laboring under the unrelenting cruelty of slavery, while gospel-inspired freedom songs sustained a movement for justice and equality for all. The smooth sounds of jazz and the soulful strain of the blues fed a renaissance in art and prose. The rhythm and blues that began in a basement in Detroit brought people together when laws would have kept them apart, while the urban beats and young wordsmiths from cities coast-to-coast gave voice to a new generation. And on stages and in concert halls around the world, African-American singers and composers have enhanced opera, symphony, and classical music by bringing energy and creativity to traditional genres.
At its core, African-American music mirrors the narrative of its original creators -- born of humble beginnings and raised to refuse the limitations and circumstances of its birth. This month, we honor the African-American musicians, composers, singers, and songwriters who have forever shaped our musical heritage, and celebrate those who carry this rich legacy forward.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2012 as African-American Music Appreciation Month. I call upon public officials, educators, and all the people of the United States to observe this month with appropriate activities and programs that raise awareness and foster appreciation of music that is composed, arranged, or performed by African Americans.

A Proclamation
From generation to generation, ordinary Americans have led a proud and
inexorable march toward freedom, fairness, and full equality under the
law ‑‑ not just for some, but for all. Ours is a heritage forged by
those who organized, agitated, and advocated for change; who wielded
love stronger than hate and hope more powerful than insult or injury;
who fought to build for themselves and their families a Nation where no
one is a second-class citizen, no one is denied basic rights, and all of
us are free to live and love as we see fit.
The lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community has
written a proud chapter in this fundamentally American story. From brave
men and women who came out and spoke out, to union and faith leaders
who rallied for equality, to activists and advocates who challenged
unjust laws and marched on Washington, LGBT Americans and allies have
achieved what once seemed inconceivable. This month, we reflect on their
enduring legacy, celebrate the movement that has made progress
possible, and recommit to securing the fullest blessings of freedom for
all Americans.
Since I took office, my Administration has worked to broaden
opportunity, advance equality, and level the playing field for LGBT
people and communities. We have fought to secure justice for all under
the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr., Hate Crimes Prevention Act, and
we have taken action to end housing discrimination based on sexual
orientation and gender identity. We expanded hospital visitation rights
for LGBT patients and their loved ones, and under the Affordable Care
Act, we ensured that insurance
companies will no longer be able to deny
coverage to someone just because they are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or
transgender. Because we understand that LGBT rights are human rights, we
continue to engage with the international community in promoting and
protecting the rights of LGBT persons around the world. Because we
repealed "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," gay, lesbian, and bisexual Americans
can serve their country openly, honestly, and without fear of losing
their jobs because of whom they love. And because we must treat others
the way we want to be treated, I personally believe in marriage equality
for same-sex couples.
More remains to be done to ensure every single American is treated
equally, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Moving
forward, my Administration will continue its work to advance the rights
of LGBT Americans. This month, as we reflect on how far we have come and
how far we have yet to go, let us recall that the progress we have made
is built on the words and deeds of ordinary Americans. Let us pay
tribute to those who came before us, and those who continue their work
today; and let us rededicate ourselves to a task that is unending ‑‑ the
pursuit of a Nation where all are equal, and all have the full and
unfettered opportunity to pursue happiness and live openly and freely.

Washington, D.C. – May 9, 2012 – Today, President Obama affirmed his
support of marriage for loving and committed same-sex couples. The
National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC), the nation’s leading Black LGBT
civil rights organization, applauds the President for this historic
endorsement of the freedom to marry.
“It is an honor to witness our President take such a strong stand in
support of gay and lesbian couples across the country,” says Sharon
Lettman-Hicks, Executive Director and CEO of the National Black Justice
Coalition. “This affirmation reinforces the Administration’s ongoing
commitment to LGBT Americans and our families.”
The President has had an exemplary record advancing protections for
the LGBT community. However, he explained that his position on marriage
equality had been changing and had not explicitly proclaimed his support
of extending marriage to gay and lesbian couples until now. Despite the
repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” ending the legal defense of the
Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), endorsing the Student Non-Discrimination
Act (SNDA) and more, President Obama had been under increased pressure
for his self-described “evolving” position on marriage equality when
Vice President Biden said he was “absolutely comfortable” with marriage
for loving and committed same-sex couples.
“As my (s)hero, Barbara Jordan, once said, ‘one thing is clear to me:
we, as human beings, must be willing to accept people who are different
from ourselves,’” Lettman-Hicks adds. “Here is President Obama, the
nation’s first Black president, taking a position that no sitting
president in history has had the fortitude to ever take. If anyone in
America has ever wondered what courageous leadership looks like, here it
is.”

The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) is a
civil rights organization dedicated to empowering Black lesbian, gay,
bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. NBJC’s mission is to eradicate
racism and homophobia.
Well, President Obama finally said yesterday in an interview with ABC's Robin Roberts (not sure if we're related) the words that elements of the rainbow community have wanted him to say since 2008 about same sex marriage.
I had no doubts he felt that way based on statements he'd made back when he was an Illinois state senator in 1996 and his record on rainbow community issues since taking office.
As I've said more than a few times, I support same gender marriage and I'm exceedingly proud that it was an African-American president who announced he supports this issue. Where I part company is not sharing the feeling prevalent in some quarters of the rainbow community that marriage is THE most important issue in the TBLG community human rights push.
And just to remind you what issue I think is most important for the rainbow community, having and keeping a J-O-B is. But back to this post.
I'm also looking at the big picture here and wondering if in the feeding frenzy to hound President Obama into stating six months before the election that he supports same gender marriage, did the vanillacentric GL community just repeat the political mistake they made in 2004 by pushing same gender marriage when we had the chance to defeat George W Bush that year.
To me and many African Americans trans, gay, straight and cisgender, it is vitally important that President Obama be standing on the steps of the Capitol on January 20 taking the oath of office for his second term. It puts him in the same historic territory with other two term presidents, gives him a chance to continue building on his legacy and forever removes the possibility that the conservafools can stamp his presidency as a failure despite their best attempts to do so.
It is also important to the African-American community that he be there along with his family in that nice white mansion on Pennsylvania Avenue my ancestors built with their unpaid labor through January 20, 2017.
The next president will have the opportunity to possibly select three Supreme Court justices.
Antonin Scalia and Anthony Kennedy were selected by Ronald Reagan, and Clinton appointee Ruth Bader Ginsburg is hinting at retirement from the SCOTUS.
We have 50 federal judiciary seats open because the GOP is playing the massive resistance game and hoping y'all fall for the okey doke and elect Willard to the presidency so he can start filling them with federal judges selected by Robert Bork
So yes, GLBT community, it IS about the federal judiciary. When you can't get legislation through a logjammed Congress, the court system is the next place to redress those grievances we have.
As we trans people have discovered when we've gone to federal court lately, the president who appoints the people who sit in these judicial seats in an era of hyper partisanship matters.
As for the assertion that it will cost the off the charts popular President Obama votes in the African-American community, I will defer to the wisdom of Aisha Moodie-Mills and what she had to say about that.
“It’s really quite ridiculous to believe that black folks would stay home and not vote for the first black president over gay marriage. It’s just ludicrous! No megachurch pastor, as bigoted as he may be, has the power to persuade a whole congregation of black folks to turn against this president.”
So yeah, I'm not fazed about the 4% cookie chomping segment of sellout GOP knee-grows that were already planning to vote for Mitt version 2012. The last Republican presidential candidate to get more than 15% of the African-American vote was Junior in 2004, and he had the help of 18 anti-gay marriage referenda on the ballot and a legion of sellout knee-grow megachurch pastors such as TD Jakes, Bishop Eddie Long and Donnie McClurkin acting as surrogates to do that.
But I'd be lying if I wrote in this post I wasn't concerned about how this announcement will affect a presidential election that has six months to go. The facts are many non-white peeps are nervous about this election.
We already know there's a certain percentage of this electorate who will not vote for an African-American period. Combined with the fact that ALEC and their GOP legislative partners have been merrily passing voter ID suppression legislation targeted at reducing the number of Black, Latino, senior and student voters going to the polls on November 6 that were the major reasons he took Virginia, North Carolina, New Mexico and Indiana, and you can understand why I'm spending a lot of time in prayer hoping that the justice loving part of the American electorate shows up on November 6 to overcome the bigots who will be even more frothing at the mouth motivated to defeat the POTUS.
I will be watching to see if the Internet chatter and other rhetoric I heard from vanillacentric GL peeps hollering for him to 'evolve already' comes to pass.
May I remind y'all that non-white BTLG people never left him along with those of us liberal progressives who remember our Political Science 101 and 102 that see the big political picture beyond the 'all marriage all the time' agenda.
I had more than a few testy conversations with the 'evolve already' peeps and GetEqual folks who asserted that the POTUS announcing support of same gender marriage will 'energize the base' and increase support amongst 'the gay community'.
Yeah, I noted the news blurb that stated the POTUS raised $1 million within 90 minutes of making that announcement at 2 PM CDT, but how much of it was from the gay community and are the GayTM's that y'all declared closed to him reopened?
Now that the President Obama has said those five words you wanted to hear, time for y'all to stand and deliver. Time to circle November 6 on your calendar, get registered to vote and take a bunch of friends to the polls with you because the Tea Klux Klan and friends are damned sure organizing to do the same.

Today is the one year anniversary of the SEAL Team Six mission in Pakistan that resulted in the death of al Qaeda leader and 9-11 attack mastermind Osama bin Laden.
The Republicans are trying to obfuscate and ignore the irrefutable fact that it was the African-American commander in chief who gave the order for that ultimately successful mission while the previous White House occupant failed to do so and much less was disinclined to go after him.
And yeah, may I remind y'all (snicker, snicker) during the 2008 campaign about that October 7, 2008 debate in Nashville, TN with Sen John McCain (R-AZ) in which then Sen. Obama spelled out what would happen in his administration if he got the chance to get Osama Bin Laden.
A certain Willard M. Romney called him 'naive' for doing so

Q Should the United States respect Pakistani sovereignty and not pursue al-Qaida terrorists who maintain bases there, or should we ignore their borders and pursue our enemies, like we did in Cambodia during the Vietnam War?
SEN. OBAMA: Well, Katie, it's a terrific question.
And we have a difficult situation in Pakistan. I believe that part of the reason we have a difficult situation is because we made a bad judgment going into Iraq in the first place when we hadn't finished the job of hunting down bin Laden and crushing al-Qaida.
So what happened was we got distracted, we diverted resources, and ultimately bin Laden escaped, set up base camps in the mountains of Pakistan in the northwest provinces there.
They are now raiding our troops in Afghanistan, destabilizing the situation. They're stronger now than at any time since 2001. And that's why I think it's so important for us to reverse course because that's the central front on terrorism. They are plotting to kill Americans right now. As Secretary Gates, the Defense secretary, said, the war against terrorism began in that region, and that's where it will end.
So part of the reason I think it's so important for us to end the war in Iraq is to be able to get more troops into Afghanistan, put more pressure on the Afghan government to do what it needs to do, eliminate some of the drug trafficking that's funding terrorism.
But I do believe that we have to change our policies with Pakistan. We can't coddle, as we did, a dictator, give him billions of dollars, and then he's making peace treaties with the Taliban and militants. What I have said is we're going encourage democracy in Pakistan, expand our non-military aid to Pakistan so that they have more of a stake in working with us, but insisting that they go after these militants.
And if we have Osama bin Laden in our sights and the Pakistani government is unable or unwilling to take them out, then I think that we have to act, and we will take them out.
We will kill bin Laden. We will crush al-Qaida. That has to be our biggest national security priority.

Read it and weep conservafools. This mission was REALLY accomplished and y'all hate the fact that Osama bin Laden is resting at an undisclosed location near the bottom of the Arabian Sea.
You think this White House isn't going to point out this major success in this so called by you vanillacentric fools 'failed presidency' on the campaign trail? You damned skippy he needs to pop his collar on this one. It's deliciously ironic that the Black Democratic POTUS succeeded in his first term mind you where you conservafool chicken hawks miserably failed over seven years.

As Vice President Biden recently stated, Osama is dead and the American auto industry is alive.
While I was attending our local Unity Dinner, in 'Hollywood For Ugly People' AKA Washington DC the annual White house Correspondents Dinner was taking place. I got to see it after I came home, but for those of you who missed it, here's the POTUS poking fun at himself and various people inside the bltway and the media who cover them.
The election is November 6, it's going to be a close one. The only shot Willard the Robot has of getting in the White House is lying through his teeth and stirring up hatred of the POTUS with the Tea Klux Klan and Dixiecrat wings of the RepubliKKKan party
And yeah gay community, y'all need to back up off a POTUS that is not only the best ever when it comes to trans issues but is the best gay-friendly one as well. I'm a little concerned about the hell raising and drama that's being ginned up in White GL World over an executive order that is not going to cover everyone and would be subject to be erased by the next GOP president.
I seem to recall the same
screaming from predominately white GL peeps (many who have been either
squishy about the POTUS or outright hostile to him even before he got
elected) badgering him about doing an executive order toend discrimination against GL people in the military when he (the
constitutional scholar) said it was going to take congressional
legislative action to repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell.
Turns out he
was right then and y'all weren't. Executive orders aren't magic wands
that end discrimination instantaneously 'at the stroke of a pen'.
I and many Black LGBT people in general have been just as tired
of white GL peeps who are quick to unfairly jump on this president and
hold him to standards on GLBT issues you didn't hold Clinton to while refusing to give him any credit for the stuff he has quietly done to help this community
already.
Why? Because some of y'all 'all marriage all the time' peeps are upset about his position on same gender marriage.
It's time for a reality check. Same gender marriage is not the end all be all issue for rainbow community organizing and activism.

cis, trans and gay are more nervous about this looming presidential election despite the favorable poll
numbers so far.
We see on one hand squishy white liberals we barely trust on
one side and outright attempts by the GOP to enact voter suppression
laws (that I have yet to see many GL persons, much less GetEqual
complain or protest about) that could have have deleterious effects on the rainbow community's abilities to even cast ballots on November 6.
In addition, the GOP is
playing the only KKKard they can in whipping up racist hatred of the POTUS
to help Willard the Robot get elected.
So with a liberal
Supreme Court majority in the balance, and to me that is THE issue period in this election cycle, and the GOP going Tea Klux
Fascist you damned skippy I'm looking at the big political picture.
Te POTUS has still got this, but I won't relax about this election until November 7.
Our multi-talented president is showing off his singing skills again. There was a February 21 concert at the White House that will be broadcast on PBS February 27 that featured Buddy Guy, Mick Jagger and blues legend BB King .
At the tail end of it President Obama was coaxed by Buddy Guy and Jagger into singing a few bars of 'Sweet Home Chicago' and here's the video of it.
Duh, we African-Americans have been saying this for years And no white liberals, some of y'all have been just as bad as the conservafools in terms of disrespecting President Obama.
But I didn't call him (Dubya) that to his face. Nor would I if I had the chance. And that is the difference.
Now, the deal we have always had with Presidents is that we smile and
talk nice to them when they're in front of us. And then we cut them
down and say horrible nasty things behind their backs. This has always
worked for 8th grade girls, and it's always worked for the United States
of America.
But there is something about this president that makes
conservatives think it’s okay to go ape shit in his presence. They
didn’t do this Carter, an actual pacifist, or Clinton who really did
have a plan for universal health care, or LBJ, who actually made it
easier for poor people to vote and eat. All of them clearly, evil
America haters, but they got treated with a modicum of respect, at least
to their faces.
Not Obama. What can it be that’s different about him?
It’s either his race, or it’s your brain chemistry, or it’s something
that happened when you dad spanked you and liked it, and you were
looking at a box of Cream of Wheat. I don’t know. I’m not a therapist.
Maybe, it’s not race? I don’t know what’s in people’s hearts. Except
Newt Gingrich, I know what’s in his heart, lust and cheese fries.
But this type of in the room, in your face, in your space respect
disrespect is new. Admit that, and I will admit that of course,
something like impeaching Clinton was far more serious, but it was also
at least in some ways more respectful. It was done with high pomp
through official channels. It was all about the rule of law, and the
Chief Justice wore a special robe he got from a musical, or something,
and somehow that is a lot more respectful than this.
Not that if Obama ever did anything like Clinton did, he would even
be alive. Can you imagine what they would do if they ever found out
Obama had sex with a White House intern on Easter? Talk about colored
eggs. He would have been impeached two times, one for each testicle.
This president has had to be the Caesar’s wife of Pennsylvania Avenue,
the Jackie Robinson of American politics, never reacting to the taunts
from the stands. But after you do this to try to get his goat, what’s
next? A wedgie? A purple nurple?
Gov. Brewer said she did this because she felt threatened. Right,
like Obama ran his finger down his blouse and said, ‘you my white
princess.’
And I'm looking forward to reelecting Barack Hussein Obama II to a second term!
It should be crystal clear by now if you love this country and want to see it succeed, survive and thrive, you'll be doing the same as well on November 6.
While we're still waiting for the Republifools to sort out who their presidential nominee will be in their knockdown dragged our primary fight, thanks to the Commission on Presidential Debates we already know the dates of the 2012 Presidential and Vice Presidential debates and where they will take place.
The first will happen on October 3 in Denver, CO. President Obama will take on the GOP presidential nominee on the University of Denver campus.
On October 11 in Danville, KY Vice President Joe Biden will take on the GOP vice presidental nominee in the only vice presidential debate on the beautiful campus of Centre College.
October 16 will see the second presidential debate happen on the campus of Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY between the POTUS and his GOP opponent.
The final presidential debate will occur on October 22 between President Obama and his Republican opponent on the campus of Lynn University in Boca Raton, FL.
The formats, moderators and times are still to be determined.
In addition to attempting to suppress and depress African-American, student and Latino voter turnout in advance of our upcoming election with Voter ID laws in GOP controlled states, the birther wing of the conservafool movement has been busy filing court cases in several states attempting to get President Obama removed from the ballot by trying to pimp the lie that he is not a 'natural born citizen.'
The 14th Amendment to the US constitution says other wise, but you can't tell birther queen and Russian immigrant Orly Taitz that.
In a 10 page order, Judge Michael Malihi wrote Obama "became a citizen at birth and is a natural-born citizen." . Accordingly, Obama is eligible as a candidate for the upcoming
presidential primary in March.
Malihi dismissed one birther challenge that
contended Obama has a computer-generated Hawaiian birth certificate, a
fraudulent Social Security number and invalid U.S. identification
papers.
He also turned back another challenge that claimed the president is
ineligible to be a candidate because his father was not an American citizen
at the time of President Obama's birth.
The results go to Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp (R) who will make the final determination.
Despite setbacks in Alabama and now Georgia, the Obama Derangement Syndrome of the conservafool movement known no boundaries.
The so called 'Queen of the Birthers' will next peddle her legalistic bull feces in Indiana. Before you do so Miss Thang, review Section 1 of the 14th Amendment:
Section 1.All persons born or naturalized in the United States,
and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United
States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or
enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of
citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of
life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any
person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
Translation, the POTUS is a United States citizen and he won in an electoral landslide in 2008. Deal with it.
The story of African Americans is a story of resilience and perseverance. It traces a people who refused to accept the circumstances under which they arrived on these shores, and it chronicles the generations who fought for an America that truly reflects the ideals enshrined in our founding documents. It is the narrative of slaves who shepherded others along the path to freedom and preachers who organized against the rules of Jim Crow, of young people who sat-in at lunch counters and ordinary men and women who took extraordinary risks to change our Nation for the better. During National African American History Month, we celebrate the rich legacy of African Americans and honor the remarkable contributions they have made to perfecting our Union.
This year's theme, "Black Women in American Culture and History," invites us to pay special tribute to the role African American women have played in shaping the character of our Nation -- often in the face of both racial and gender discrimination. As courageous visionaries who led the fight to end slavery and tenacious activists who fought to expand basic civil rights to all Americans, African American women have long served as champions of social and political change. And from the literary giants who gave voice to their communities to the artists whose harmonies and brush strokes captured hardships and aspirations, African American women have forever enriched our cultural heritage. Today, we stand on the shoulders of countless African American women who shattered glass ceilings and advanced our common goals. In recognition of their legacy, let us honor their heroic and historic acts for years to come.
The achievements of African American women are not limited to those recorded and retold in our history books. Their impact is felt in communities where they are quiet heroes who care for their families, in boardrooms where they are leaders of industry, in laboratories where they are discovering new technologies, and in classrooms where they are preparing the next generation for the world they will inherit. As we celebrate the successes of African American women, we recall that progress did not come easily, and that our work to widen the circle of opportunity for all Americans is not complete. With eyes cast toward new horizons, we must press on in pursuit of a high-quality education for every child, a job for every American who wants one, and a fair chance at prosperity for every individual and family across our Nation.
During National African American History Month, we pay tribute to the contributions of past generations and reaffirm our commitment to keeping the American dream alive for the next generation. In honor of those women and men who paved the way for us, and with great expectations for those to follow, let us continue the righteous cause of making America what it should be -- a Nation that is more just and more equal for all its people.

In case there were any doubts among trans and SGL people in our ranks that the Obama Administration is the most rainbow community friendly one in US history, the White House announced yesterday that it was embarking on a series of conferences across the country from February to June 2012.
The stated purpose according to a press release is so that the public can “hear directly” from the administration on efforts “to ensure health, well-being, security, justice, and equality for LGBT Americans.”.
The first according to a Washington Blade report is slated for Philadelphia on February 16 in conjunction with the White House LGBT Conference on Health being held there.
The events are a collaboration between the White House Office of Public Engagement and other offices and agencies and will cover topics such as housing and homelessness, safe schools and communities as well as HIV/AIDS prevention
The White House will make more details public about the TBLG conferences as this evolves and other conference locations and dates are confirmed.
