President Obama's Farewell Speech

Image result for obama farewell speech 2017
It was a moment that we knew would eventually come, but it still didn't make it any easier to watch.

President Barack Obama returned to Chicago last night and took the stage at McCormick Place to make his farewell address to the nation.

There were moments when I was in full ugly crying mode as I thought about the historic nature of this presidency and the fact that those of us in the trans community are losing a champion.

It's also irritating that our nation is going from Harvard Law to Hee Haw (or worse) in nine days/

Here's the video of it

President Obama's Farewell Address Later Tonight

Note I didn't say 'potentially'. I have the confidence to say that he WILL be a great president. If we were going to have a first Black president I like my African descended brothers and sisters wanted him or her to be the best and brightest member of our community. Hopefully at the end of his second term, the nation will be lamenting the fact that we couldn't elect him to a third term.
-TransGriot, February 28, 2009 Why Barack Obama Will Be An Outstanding
President

Seems like ages ago and a different more optimistic time that I wrote that post about our newly inaugurated president.   The eight years he has been in office during this historic presidency have flown by and the country is much better than it was when he took it over.
His hair is a lot grayer than when he took the oath of office in 2009 as well.

Image result for president first familyBut now he's about to hand it over in ten days to a blithering Republican idiot and buffoon, but before he does so, he will be in Chicago later tonight to give his farewell address to the nation
The 7000 tickets in the venue where he will deliver that farewell address were distributed in less than fifteen minutes/

Like many people, especially in the African American community, I will probably be shedding a tear of two a
s the realization hits me that I not only won't see this man and his amazing family living at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in ten days, I may not see another African American or other person of color elected president in my lifetime .

And after five trips to the White House during this presidency, I know after January 20 I won't be going there, much less seeing the inside of that building for the next four years.  I also won't feel , much less feel as proud of my president as I was of Barack Hussein Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama and their wonderful daughters..

The speech will air at 8 PM CST, and I like many Americans will be glued to the television to watch it.

First Lady Michelle Obama Calls Out Trump's Treatment Of Women In NH Speech

Image result for Michelle obama calls out trump's treatment of women
First Lady Michelle Obama was tellin' it like it T-I-S is about a certain Republican sexual predator running for the presidency.

“The measure of any society is how it treats their women and girls. I can’t believe that a candidate for president of the United States has bragged about sexually assaulting women. This kind of violence and abuse and disrespect to women… This is not something that we just sweep under the rug as another disturbing footnote in a sad election season. The shameful comments about our bodies, the disrespect to our intellects, the belief that you can do anything to a woman. It’s cruel. The truth is it hurts. We are drowning in it.

All of us are doing what women have always done. We’re trying to keep our heads above water, just trying to get through it, trying to pretend that this doesn’t really bother us. Maybe we think that admitting how much it hurts makes us as women look weak. Maybe we’re afraid of being that vulnerable. Maybe we’ve grown accustomed to swallowing these emotions and staying quiet because we’ve seen that people often won’t take our word over his. Or maybe we don’t want to believe that there are still people our there who think so little of us as women. So many are treating this as just another day, as if our outrage is overblown. This is not normal. This is not politics as usual. This is disgraceful; it is not tolerable.

It doesn’t matter what party you belong to. None of us deserve this kind of abuse. This isn’t about politics. It’s about basic human decency. We cannot expose our children to this any longer, not for another minute, and let alone for four years. Now is the time for all of us to say enough is enough. If all of this is painful to us as grown women, what do you think this is doing to our children? What lessons do you think this is teaching to girls about their worth?

To dismiss this as ‘locker room talk’ is an insult to decent men. The men in my life are concerned about what this election is doing to our boys and men who are looking for role models. Strong men, men who are truly role models don’t need to put down women to feel powerful.

We need someone who is a united force, someone who will heal the wounds that divide us. I believe with all my heart that Hillary Clinton will be that president. When things get tough, she doesn’t complain. She doesn’t abandon ship. Hillary Clinton has never quit on anything in her life. She is someone who has waited her turn and helped out while waiting! No one could be more qualified for this job than Hillary. We as Americans, we as decent human beings, can come together and declare that enough is enough. We need to recover from our shock and depression and we need to do what women do, we roll up our sleeves and get to work. We need to vote, we need to make calls. We cannot afford to be tired or turned off. On November 8, we have the opportunity to show our children that this country is big enough for us all, and that each of us is a precious part of this great American story and we are always stronger together. We reject hatred and fear. In difficult times we don't discard our highest ideals. That is who we are, and don't let anyone tell you differently!"

Happy 55th Birthday President Obama!

Today is the 55th birthday of our President Barack Hussein Obama.   He was born on this date in Honolulu, HI in 1961 exactly nine months before I arrived on the planet., even though Donald Trump and his birther fools ignorantly dispute that fact.

Frack 'em.   They can keep letting their hate flow for the best POTUS of my lifetime. He is still in the White House and the Oval Office until 12:01 PM EST on January 20, 2017,

Today will unfortunately be the last birthday that President Obama celebrates as a resident of that nice house at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave that our slave ancestors built.  That thought of the clock inexorably ticking toward the end of this historic presidency makes me sad to contemplate.

It has been amazing and inspirational to see the rise of the self described skinny kid with the funny name become a US senator and later POTUS, and he has lived up to everything I said he would do back when I wrote that post in February 2009

And the admiration for him hasn't stopped at our borders, it covers the entire African Diaspora.  I remember a conversation I had with Renee Martin of Womanist Musings and her telling me how excited her son was to get for his birthday the magazines I sent him with President Obama on the cover.

He is respected by other world leaders, unlike the previous POTUS, and that makes me as a person who shares his ethnic background pleased and proud to hear that.

I'm also pleased and proud to note that this is the most scandal free administration that we have had in decades.

Happy birthday Mr. President!   May you celebrate many more.

First Lady Michelle Obama's DNC 2016 Speech

For those of you who didn't get to witness it live, First Lady Michelle Obama took to the DNC 2016 stage last night and delivered a speech for the ages that reminded me at times of the one her hubby dropped at the 2004 DNC event in Boston.

No wonder Melania Trump plagiarized the FLOTUS' 2008 DNC speech last week.

This #DNCinPhilly speech was so outstanding that when she was done she should have dropped the mic and walked off the stage when it was over.

But hey, judge for yourselves.   Here's the video of the DNC 2016 speech.

President Obama's Speech To Canadian Parliament

President Obama took a quick trip north of the border to Ottawa to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto for a trilateral meeting,

He then spoke to the Canadian Parliament yesterday in the wake of that North American Leader's Summit meeting.

Here's the video of the speech.

Moni's In The Middle Of The White House LGBT Pride Reception

After a emotional United flight up here to BWI in which for once I didn't get jacked up in TSA security, interesting Uber rides on the H-town and BWI ends in which I discussed politics and life in Houston for my BWI Uber driver who is ironically moving to Houston next week with his family , having dinner and drinks with Hayden Mora, Angelica Ross and Ruby Corado, it's now hitting me that I'm finally going to be in the White House for my first LGBT Pride Reception.

It will be the last one that President Obama will host of his administration (sniff, sniff) and looking forward to just soaking it in, tweeting it, taking photos, seeing who is there and taking as many photos as possible.

So far I'm not the only Houstonian up here for it.  Ashton Woods has already let me  know that he'll be there, and I'm anxious to see how much of my trans fam will be in that nice white mansion my ancestors built with their free labor..

I have to be in line at the White House southeast entrance at 2;30 PM EDT to clear security, and y'all know I made damned sure I made sure I put my ID back in my wallet after I cleared TSA security at IAH.

If it's anything like previous White House LGBT Pride Reception events, you might be able to see it on C-SPAN starting around 4 PM EDT.

President Obama Stands Up For Trans People In PBS Town Hall

Another historic moment for transkind took place in a PBS town hall Wednesday  hosted by Gwen Ifill as President Obama continued to cement his legacy as the best president ever on trans human rights.

A question was asked of him during the town hall in Elkhart, IN concerning why the bathroom has become a pressing political issue?

As any trans person can tel;l you, it isn't about bathrooms, it's about human rights coverage for trans people, but check out courtesy of this video how eloquently President Obama made that case.

2016 LGBT Pride Month Presidential Proclamation

This is the last LGBT Pride Month presidential proclamation (sniff sniff) that President Obama will issue during his term that ends on January 20.

he is the best president ever on trans issues, and I hope his successor, whoever SHE is exceeds his record on trans issues.

Here's the proclamation.

LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, AND TRANSGENDER PRIDE MONTH, 2016
- - - - - - -
BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
A PROCLAMATION
Since our founding, America has advanced on an unending path toward becoming a more perfect Union.  This journey, led by forward-thinking individuals who have set their sights on reaching for a brighter tomorrow, has never been easy or smooth.  The fight for dignity and equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people is reflected in the tireless dedication of advocates and allies who strive to forge a more inclusive society.  They have spurred sweeping progress by changing hearts and minds and by demanding equal treatment -- under our laws, from our courts, and in our politics.  This month, we recognize all they have done to bring us to this point, and we recommit to bending the arc of our Nation toward justice.
Last year's landmark Supreme Court decision guaranteeing marriage equality in all 50 States was a historic victory for LGBT Americans, ensuring dignity for same-sex couples and greater equality across State lines.  For every partnership that was not previously recognized under the law and for every American who was denied their basic civil rights, this monumental ruling instilled newfound hope, affirming the belief that we are all more free when we are treated as equals.
LGBT individuals deserve to know their country stands beside them.  That is why my Administration is striving to better understand the needs of LGBT adults and to provide affordable, welcoming, and supportive housing to aging LGBT Americans.  It is also why we oppose subjecting minors to the harmful practice of conversion therapy, and why we are continuing to promote equality and foster safe and supportive learning environments for all students.  We remain committed to addressing health disparities in the LGBT community -- gay and bisexual men and transgender women of color are at a particularly high risk for HIV, and we have worked to strengthen our National HIV/AIDS Strategy to reduce new infections, increase access to care, and improve health outcomes for people living with HIV.
Despite the extraordinary progress of the past few years, LGBT Americans still face discrimination simply for being who they are.  I signed an Executive Order in 2014 that prohibits discrimination against Federal employees and contractors on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.  I urge the Congress to enact legislation that builds upon the progress we have made, because no one should live in fear of losing their job simply because of who they are or who they love.  And our commitment to combatting discrimination against the LGBT community does not stop at our borders:  Advancing the fair treatment of all people has long been a cornerstone of American diplomacy, and we have made defending and promoting the human rights of LGBT individuals a priority in our engagement across the globe.  In line with America's commitment to the notion that all people should be treated fairly and with respect, champions of this cause at home and abroad are upholding the simple truth that LGBT rights are human rights.
There remains much work to do to extend the promise of our country to every American, but because of the acts of courage of the millions who came out and spoke out to demand justice and of those who quietly toiled and pushed for progress, our Nation has made great strides in recognizing what these brave individuals long knew to be true in their hearts -- that love is love and that no person should be judged by anything but the content of their character.  During Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month, as Americans wave their flags of pride high and march boldly forward in parades and demonstrations, let us celebrate how far we have come and reaffirm our steadfast belief in the equal dignity of all Americans.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2016 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month.  I call upon the people of the United States to eliminate prejudice everywhere it exists, and to celebrate the great diversity of the American people.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirty-first day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand sixteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and fortieth.

BARACK OBAMA

President Obama's Hiroshima Speech

White House Instagram
On May 27 President Obama made more history in an already historic presidency.   He because the first sitting US president to travel to Hiroshima, where the first atomic bomb was droppedon August 6, 1945.

Ten other US presidents had declined to do so, but President Obama didn't.

While the right wingers here in the US have predictably gone off the deep end about it, the rest of the world and reality based America have praised him doing so and the speech he gave in front of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial marking the Ground Zero spot above where the bomb exploded..

Here's the video of that historic speech

President Obama Dropping The Mic At The WH Correspondent's Dinner

Last night before I headed downstairs from my room to the Black Diamond Ball, I took some time to check out the live broadcast of the White House Correspondent's Dinner because it will be the last time I'll get to see the coolest POTUS of my lifetime do so.

It was the last appearance of President Obama at the 'Nerd Prom' as the White House Correspondents Dinner is jokingly nicknamed, and it will be one we remember for a long time because he literally dropped to mic when he was done.

He did such a bang up job it was a tough follow up act for The Daily Show's Larry Wilmore.

Yeah, we're definitely going to miss this president when he hands over the office to his successor on January 20, whoever she is..

Here's the video of his White House Correspondents Dinner speech for those of you who missed it

The 'Trans Obamas' Meet President Obama

You TransGriot readers know how much I love one of my fave couples in Precious Davis and Myles Brady,  and it's looking more likely I'll be bouncing up to Chicago for Creating Change 2016 when it kicks off in January at the Hilton Chicago.

Precious is one of the four co-chairs for #CC16, and looking forward to seeing her and the rest of our Chicago fam January 20-24

Our community nickname for our fave trans couple is the 'Trans Obamas', and during the LGBT Pride Reception at the White House back in June they finally got to meet the POTUS they are nicknamed after.   If you were watching this year's VMA's they were onstage presenting an award during that event, in addition to being the MC's for this year's Trans 100 event.

And coming soon is the January 2016 Say Yes To The Dress episode featuring Precious.   When it airs she will become the first trans feminine woman ever featured on the show.

So yeah, they get around.   And I'm bursting at the seams proud of them.   They are a living example of what I am talking about when I say that Black trans people are part of the kente cloth fabric of our community.

Precious and Myles are not only role modeling what a trans couple in love looks like, they are by doing so  committing a revolutionary act while doing so.   It's even more important Precious and Myles are open and visible about that when we have elements of our own Black community trying to erase our Blackness and our humanity as trans people.

Looking forward to seeing y'all both in a few months.

Happy Birthday To The Best POTUS Ever

Yep, today is President Barack Obama's 54th birthday.   The best US president ever and the best ever on trans human rights issues was born on this date in Honolulu, HI in 1961.

The birthers still dispute that, but frack them, they aren't wrapped too tight anyway.   Just the sight of the Black man in the Oval Office since 2009 has sent them off the deep end into a seething Confederate flag waving rage.   And I love every minute of it.

Oops, I think i just described his Republican Party opposition and not the birthers.  My bad.

This man is the best president ever.  Stopped a second Great Depression from happening.  Got Osama Bin Laden.  Dow is at record highs.  Passed the Affordable Care Act.  Restored respect for our country on the world stage.and is smarter than the average Republican.

And he gets to celebrate one more birthday next year at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

Hope he's getting a chance to enjoy it with the FLOTUS and First daughters before he has to handle whatever business is on his schedule for today.

President Obama's 2015 NAACP Convention Speech

While the Latino community leaders were gathering in Kansas City for the National Council of La Raza Convention, at the same time in Philadelphia the NAACP was meeting July 11-15 for its 106th national convention at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

And yep NCLR Conference delegates, as you and I suspected, there were no sightings of GOP presidential candidates at the NAACP convention either.

One of the speakers for that just concluded convention in the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection was none other than President Barack Obama.

He spoke to the assembled delegates on Tuesday, and here's the text and the video of his speech.

We The People WH Trans Flag Colors For TDOR 2015 Petition

As we recently discovered when the wingers freaked out over the White House being lit in the rainbow flag colors on June 26 to celebrate the SCOTUS marriage equality ruling, the White House is lit up for special occasions.

It is lit in pink for breast cancer awareness and the fountains are dyed green for St Patrick's Day.

A We The People petition has been created seeking to get the White House lit up in the pink, blue and white colors of the trans pride flag for the Transgender Day Of Remembrance on November 20.

***

We petition the Obama administration to:

Light the White House in the transgender pride flag colors on November 20th, the Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Annually the White House is lit up pink to support breast cancer awareness. The fountains have been dyed green for St. Patrick's Day. On Friday June 26th the White House was lit up in the LGBT Pride flag colors to celebrate the historic victory of national marriage rights for the community. Trans people were among the many who celebrated this reaction by the White House.

Trans people however still face many unique obstacles to participating fully in the American dream.

Since its inception in 1999, the Transgender Day of Remembrance has grown from a national to an international event.

Beyond a historic first, the powerful symbolism of having the White House lit in the colors of the Transgender Pride flag on that date would be a significant event.

Published Date: Jul 06, 2015

***
I like this idea, hence the signal boosting post for it.

In order to get an official response from the White House concerning this petition, we need to gather 100,000 signatures before August 5, and yes the TransGriot has already signed it as the eleventh person to do so.

I'm asking you trans peeps and allies to sign it and share it with your influence network so we can exceed that 100K signature requirement before the deadline.  Here's the link to do so.

Let's do this and honor our fallen trans folks with something extra special during this year's TDOR commemorations by getting the Obama Administration to light up the White House in the trans flag colors.

Obama Presidential Center To Be In Chicago

There were 13 areas that fought to get it including his hometown of Honolulu, but in the end the Barack Obama Presidential Center's home will be in Chicago.

The Barack Obama Foundation decided May 12 to accept the University of Chicago proposal to build in either Washington Park or Jackson Park.

The foundation following the announcement by the President and First Lady immediately got to the business of selecting an architect to design it and coordinate the details for the construction of it.

They will also discuss the needed infrastructure improvements and details concerning building the Obama Presidential Center on city owned parkland with the City of Chicago, in addition to determining which park will be the home of it..

If you're wondering when you'll be able to take a trip to Chitown to visit the Obama Presidential Library, you'll have to wait a few years.  Construction is not scheduled to begin until after President Obama leaves office in January 2017, with completion scheduled between 2020 and 2021.

FLOTUS Tuskegee Commencement Speech On Race

First Lady Michelle Obama was the commencement speaker for Tuskegee University's 2015 commencement last Saturday, and in that 30 minute speech she touched on some of the racist disrespect that she and President Obama have received that predated his election in November 2008.

Mrs. Obama recounted the racist comments she and her husband have endured during their time in the political spotlight as the eventual First Couple.  The reprehensible highlights included she and the future President being assumed to be “the help” by fellow guests at formal events and Fox News calling the First Lady her “husband’s crony of color” and “Obama’s baby mama.”

Yeah, that last one pissed me and my mother the hell off when we heard it.  We both went on a long rant discussing it one night

But the point the FLOTUS was making in this speech is that it isn't about her, but the ongoing systemic problem of racism in America.  She also urged affected communities to never give up hope for a better tomorrow as we fight the ills that negatively affect us today.

So here's the video of the Tuskegee University commencement speech

President Obama's Selma 50 Speech

In case you didn't see it, and I didn't see yesterday's speech live since I was traveling back to Houston from Washington DC, here's President Obama's remarks about the anniversary of Bloody Sunday with the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the background.

We owe much to those Bloody Sunday marchers, including Congressman John Lewis.   Because of that event, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 passed, and without the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the Black political power it unleashed, we wouldn't have had President Obama standing there on this 50th anniversary of the event to give a speech about it.

Here's President Obama and the video of the speech.
