TransGriot NFL Picks - Week 4

 

This young NFL season has actually made it to the fourth week   It's now October, and we're now a quarter of the way through the 2020 season.   It was also interesting that we got to this point before a team started having positive COVID tests, and that team turned out to be the Tennessee Traitors, er Titans. 

Eleven people, including five players have tested positive for COVID, with more peeps testing positive today.  Tennessee is in a Republican controlled state that has been less than diligent in handing their COVID business, so not surprised to see the first NFL team affected is the Titans. 

They were scheduled to play the Pittsburgh Steelers in Nashville, and that game has now been rescheduled to Week 7.  The NFL also moved the Steelers game against the Ravens to Week 8

TransGriot NFL Picks- Week 3

 I've been doing NFL picks for over two decades and on this blog since 2010.   I have never had a perfect week.   But that almost happened for me in this young 2020 NFL season.  I went into the Week 2 Monday night game between the New Orleans Saints and the Las Vegas Raiders a Saints win away from going 16-0.

But alas, they didn't.   129 accepted penalty yards against the Saints sealed their fate in the first NFL regular season game played in Nevada as the Raiders beat their in their new playpen 34-24  

A 15-1 week is still nothing to be upset about, but yeah, I am after coming that close to perfection.

TransGriot 2020 NFL Picks- Week 2

The first week of the season is the hardest one to get right because of all the changes to personnel, coaching, et cetera.   It was also tricky not having any preseason games to look at as a guide to how these team's might play in the regular season 

Despite that, I did go 10-6 in the opening week. Could have done better if I hadn't changed my  Cardinals- 49ers pick.  Hopkins going off in that game combined with the Texans Thursday night loss to the Chiefs revived again the criticism that I and a lot of people in H-town leveled at Bill O'Brien for trading D-Hop in the first place without getting at least a first round pick for him.   The Texans brutal opening schedule isn't going to help quiet the critics..

Oh well, lesson learned.  Next time I follow my intuition and stick with it.

TransGriot 2020 NFL Picks- Week 1

Considering that COVID 19 screwed up the NFL off season, still surprised that the season has started on schedule.    One thing I'm very happy about is that Deshaun Watson will continue to be the QB for my Texans through the 2024 season.  The thing I'm not happy about is the boneheaded Bill O'Brien decision to trade Deandre Hopkins to Arizona. 

Well, we're about to find out if that was a wise decision because the Texans and their retooled receiver corp faces the team that ended their 2019 season in the NFL champion Kansas City Chiefs.

As usual, we have a lot of old faces in new places like Tom Brady and Gronk in Tampa Bay, Cam Newton in New England.  Of great concern to me because these teams are the Texans divisional rivals, former Texan number one draft choice Jadaveon Clowney will now be playing for the (yuck) Tennessee Traitors and Philip Rivers will be the starting QB for the Indianapolis Colts.

The Raiders will now be playing their home games in Las Vegas and the Washington NFL Team finally dropped their racist nickname. 

The Rams and Chargers will also be playing their home games at their new playpen, SoFi Stadium.
Those NFL home games will at least for the first few weeks, be played without fans in the stands.

As y'all know.  Mike Watts and I conduct this contest under the following rules.

We pick all the winners of that weeks games with no spread.   Picks need to be in no later than 10 minutes before kickoff of the first game of that week's schedule.

You forget to pick one (as I did last year and it cost me the 2019 title) it's an automatic loss.  Games that end in a tie will be recorded as a tie for prognostication record purposes. 

Person with the best record at the end of the regular season will be crowned the TransGriot NFL prognostication champion.

2019 TransGriot NFL Picks- Week 17

This it it.   The last week of the regular NFL season.   Playoff seedings and the NFC East and West  division titles are on the line.  For many of the teams that qualified and either locked in their byes into the Divisional round or are headed to Wild Card Weekend, it's deciding whether they want to rest starters or play them.   

Then there's the other side of this last week of the NFL season for the teams that didn't qualify for the playoffs.  It's assessing what went wrong with this 2019 season, making corrections, and gearing up for the 2020 NFL Draft in a few months.

And tomorrow, a few NFL coaches who have been on the hot seat for months will be getting fired.  Over/under on that is FIVE coaches get the pink slips on Monday and TWO GM's .

Ron Rivera has already been fired by the Carolina Panthers, and Jacksonville Jaguars GM Tom Coughlin has already been given the boot 

The first pick for the draft has been locked up by the Cincinnati Bengals, we'll see how the rest of the picks all after today's games are played

. 

This is the last week of the regular season and after 16 weeks of prognostication, we are tied going into the last 16 games of the regular season.   Who will take the title this year?:   We're about to find out.

2019 TransGriot NFL Picks -Week 16

Merry Christmas people!

This 2019 NFL prognostication contest between myself and Mr. Watts is as usual shaping up to be a battle that will probably come down to the final weekend.

In Week 15 we both tied  with identical 10-6 records, and we're tied in the overall standings.   I'm kicking myself because I originally had the Bills beating the Steelers, then changed the pick before I locked it in.

The Texans redeemed themselves by winning a hard fought 24-21 game against the Tennessee Traitors in Nashville to take control of the AFC South race.   Hopefully the Texans will give the city of Houston an early Christmas present by clinching the division and a playoff berth with a win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Meanwhile the bandwagon riding Harris County Arlington Cowchip fans took their jerseys out of the  closet after they blew out the Rams 44-21 at Jerryworld to end a three game losing streak and beat a team with a winning record for the first time in the 2019 season. 

That sets up a winner take all NFC East showdown game with the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday in which the loser will probably be out of the playoffs.

2019 TransGriot NFL Picks- Week 15

Week 14 was filled with some shocking upsets.   One of those games pissed me off that involved my fave NFL ballers.   The Texans, after one of the best games in franchise history in the 28-22 beatdown of the New England Patriots, stank up NRG Stadium against the Denver Broncos.

Because they didn't handle their business against the now 5-8 broncos, the Texans now have a critical game with the Tennessee Traitors this Sunday in Nashville for the AFC South lead and playoff seeding. 

Speaking of critical games, only three weeks left in the regular NFL season.  Every team is playing, every game counts toward either playoff seeding or determining who gets the number one pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.    My picks in bold red print   Mike's Week 15 ones are here.

2019 TransGriot NFL Picks -Week 14

The Texans not only beat their long time nemesis the New England Cheatriots Patriots, it wasn't even close.   Only the garbage time TD the Patriots scored made the score look closer than it actually was.  But because of the long frustrating history of the Texans versus New England, went the wrong way on that pick.

I broke even in Week 13 thanks in large part to Seattle beating the Vikings.

But it's time to get to Week 14 of the season and redeem myself after breaking even by the skin of my teeth.

2019 TransGriot NFL Picks-Week 12

Rebounded after an awful Week 11 to have a 10 win week.    Unfortunately for me Mr Watts had a better one.

I wasn't the only one who had a bad week.   Texans went up to Baltimore after their bye week and got spanked 41-7 .  Speaking of azzes that need to be kicked, how about the official who missed an obvious to everyone watching it blatant defensive pass interference call in the end zone on a 4th and 2 play to Deandre Hopkins in the first quarter of a then 0-0 game that probably changed the course of it.

NFL, how about growing some cojones and reversing obvious pass interference calls since it's obvious the refs aren't doing their damned jobs?   This is the second time this season the Texans have been screwed by a bad call.

Now they have a must win game against the Colts on Thursday night.   Maybe they'll be pissed off enough to snap the three game losing streak against Indy.

2019 TransGriot NFL Picks -Week 11

The 1972 Miami Dolphins are popping champagne corks because Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks took down the last unbeaten team in the 2019 NFL season.in overtime.

That game in a Week 10 full of upsets also capped the worst week I've had in years of NFL prognostication and my first sub-500 one of this 2019 NFL season . 

Ugh.  I want to make sure this is my LAST sub .500 week of the 2019 NFL season.

The Texans come out of their bye week and start their brutal stretch of games that see them playing the Ravens in Baltimore, a must win against their AFC South rivals the Colts and the New England Cheatriots Patriots at NRG Stadium over the next three weeks.   At the end of it, we'll know if this Texans team is a contender or a pretender.

2019 TransGriot NFL Picks - Week 10

I went from having my best week of the season to in Week 9, sweating out the Cowboys-Giants Monday night game to break even at 7-7 after all the upsets.

Then again, Mike also went 7-7, so the net result is I still have a lead going into the first NFL games of November.   

We're getting into the part of the season where each game matters for playoff seeding and positioning for the teams in the hunt for the playoffs.   it also matters in me and Mr watts season long chase for an NFL prognostication title

The Texans business trip to London was a successful one.  They not only achieved the season sweep of the Jags, we received an early Christmas present from the Pittsburgh Steelers after they knocked off the Indianapolis Colts to put the Texans back on top of the AFC South.

The games also matter to the teams down in the NFL dumps slouching toward the number one pick in the 2020 NFL draft like the Bengals.  Miami upset the Jets for their first win of the season, and hope they can get another one against the Colts.

And yes, Patriot haters everywhere rejoiced when the Ravens beat the Cheatriots Patriots 37-20 and knocked them from the ranks of the unbeaten.   That leaves the 49ers as the only unbeaten team left in the NFL.

2019 TransGriot NFL Picks- Week 9

The Texans are playing in London for the first time ever in franchise hisory, but our opponent is a familiar one in our AFC South divisional rivals the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Jalen Ramsey is no longer patrolling the Jags secondary after being traded to the LA Rams.  But we're also missing a defensive stud in future Hall of Famer JJ Watt, who is out for the rest of the season due to a torn pectoral muscle.

We still have Deshaun Watson at QB.   If only the offensive line would jell and start protecting him.   That's still going to be an interesting game for you peeps across The Pond to watch.

I had a great Week 8, going 13-2 for my best week of the season so far.   Unfortunately Mike matched me on his picks after the Bears boneheaded stunt and missed game winning field goal cost me a win.

I'd already picked up a game when the Tennessee Traitors beat the Buccaneers.

2019 TransGriot NFL Picks -Week 8

We are at the halfway point of the 2019 NFL season, and I had a great Week 7 to add to the lead I'm starting to build on defending champ Mr Watts.

The San Francisco 49ers had fun playing in the drenching rain falling in DC to beat Washington and  stay unbeaten.

Boo hiss, so are the new England Cheatriots  Patriots.   And in another example of the NFL rich getting richer, they just acquired WR Mohammed Sanu from the Atlanta Falcons.

2019 TransGriot NFL Picks -Week 7

Won another week, and could have done even better if I'd had more faith in the Texans, who used the same blueprint the Colts executed the previous week to beat the high octane offense of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Now the first place Texans face the Indianapolis Colts in a critical AFC South divisional showdown in Indy that will go a long way to determine the division title and AFC playoff seeding.   TY Hilton usually salivates when he sees the Texans on their schedule, since he has toasted more Texans defensive backs than Quizno's subs.

Meanwhile up I-45, all is not going well in Jerry World, and I'm have a schadenfreude laden moment about the pigskin drama coming out of the 214.  The Cowchips inexplicably lost their third straight game to the previously winless NY Jets 24-22 to drop to 3-3 after starting the season 3-0.

The best part about this loss is that it guarantees the Harris County Cowchip Fifth Column's mouths will stay zipped for another week. 

Peeps are demanding that Jason Garrett be fired, and the Cowboys have a divisional showdown of their own at the Jerrydome with the Philadelphia Eagles, whose coach guaranteed a win.   Will be interesting to see what transpires in that game between those two bitter divisional rivals.

Enough jibber jabber, let's get to NFL Week 7.   The Panthers, Browns, Steelers and Buccaneers all get to chill during their bye week and watch everybody else play.   So only 14 games to pick.

2019 TransGriot NFL Picks -Week 6

Week 5 was good for me since I once again won the week    It was also a good one because the Texans won big against the Falcons and the Tennessee Traitors and Arlington Cowchips lost.

Naw peeps.  never letting it go that the Traitors moved to Nashville.

The Texans rewarded my faith in them after their crappy outing last week by pimp slapping the Falcons 53-32 at NRG after Deshaun Watson threw for a career high 426 yards and five TD's, three of them going to Will Fuller who had a career day.

The Texans  now have to travel to KC to play a Chiefs team that lost to the Colts 19-13 in large part because Indy made sure that Mahomes spent more time picking splinters out of his behind and nursing his injured ankle from the bench than piling up video game yardage totals on them by running the ball down their throat.

We're almost at the halfway point of this 100th NFL season, and it's becoming clearer which teams are Super Bowl contenders and which ones will be competing for the first pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

We have another NFL game in London on the schedule and a pretty good one for you peeps across The Pond in the NFC South rematch between the Carolina Panthers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Bucs managed to shut down Christian McCaffrey and get away with a 20-14 win despite a wounded Cam Newton throwing for 333 yards in that game. 

New quarterback for the Panthers now in UH Cougar Kyle Allen in addition to McCaffrey playing at an MVP level for the moment.   Can the Bucs do it again?  We'll see.   

The Bills, Bears, Colts and Packets are on their bye week, and get to watch everyone else play.  Only 14 games to pick, so let's get to it.

2019 TransGriot NFL Picks -Week 5

We have now gone through a quarter of the 2019 NFL season with the calendar page turning to October.   Week 4 was good to me because I won my second week of this year's prognostication contest despite all the upsets.

I didn't see the Texans- Panthers game because I was in downtown Houston attending the GLBT Caucus Equality Brunch.   Glad I was because I probably would have been throwing things at my TV.   Can y'all fire Bill O'Brien and get us a new coach?

The Cowboys lost to the Saints, so anything that shuts up the Harris County Dallas Cowchip fans is all good for me.
