I sent them a note which they published, but it's really sad when our allies can't seem to get it right.

MarkeeMarkeehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04802574028189366784noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20389448.post-70840601858043146622008-10-01T01:39:00.000-05:002008-10-01T01:39:00.000-05:00@Monica thanks for answering my question.@Monica thanks for answering my question.Reneehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16388113393817266374noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20389448.post-41421559593269501792008-09-30T15:48:00.000-05:002008-09-30T15:48:00.000-05:00I wish we had the institutional/systemic power to ...I wish we had the institutional/systemic power to do that and have it be meaningful. :(

I do agree with doing it, though.Maddie Hhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05701960869234061244noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20389448.post-69842786939572818642008-09-30T15:32:00.000-05:002008-09-30T15:32:00.000-05:00Polar, you might be onto something there.Polar, you might be onto something there.VĂ©ro Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02895169022031921712noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20389448.post-41263541493324052752008-09-30T14:12:00.000-05:002008-09-30T14:12:00.000-05:00I wonder how Kim Minugh would like it, if her bio ...I wonder how Kim Minugh would like it, if her bio were rewritten in reverse, calling her male. As in
"Kim Minugh is a reporter for the Sacramento Bee. He doesn't have the sense that God gave jumbo shrimp".

That's what he's done to Ruby Molina.

Why don't we start referring to reporters, television and print, deliberately and PERSONALLY in the wrong gender and with the wrong pronouns, every time these assholes pull this kind of crap?Polarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10680433936546882101noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20389448.post-11456964716587853172008-09-30T13:43:00.000-05:002008-09-30T13:43:00.000-05:00The first story got referred to her as a transgend...The first story got referred to her as a transgender woman, but still asserted she was "really" a male, and no name came up.

The news broadcast was egregiously horrible, referring to her as a "transgender man" and as "transitioning from male to female" and everyone avoided pronouns. I actually reported this video to GLAAD, but strangely, they haven't responded (unlike other reports I've made).

I was also frustrated with the first story, in which apparently finding a trans woman's naked, drowned, body apparently doesn't indicate "foul play." It's nice to see that they've upgraded to "suspicious," but still.Maddie Hhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05701960869234061244noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20389448.post-14810262192315643162008-09-30T11:26:00.000-05:002008-09-30T11:26:00.000-05:00Thanks for that. A transperson's former name is not supposed to be in there unless it is germane to the story. That part is the gray area of the AP policy.

But putting Ruby's name in quotation marks was flat out wrong.Monica Robertshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09702533200851174728noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20389448.post-6363438878016612452008-09-30T02:39:00.000-05:002008-09-30T02:39:00.000-05:00Please excuse me for asking, but I was always told...Please excuse me for asking, but I was always told that one should never refer to someone who is transitioning or has transitioned by their former name. This article refered to her name when she presented as male. I know that it is not your job to teach me, but I really need clarification because I do not want to offend anyone in the future. Thanks for taking the time and please excuse my ignorance on the matter.Reneehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16388113393817266374noreply@blogger.com
